  • The very best!

  • This is a excellent video, thank you so much for uploading and sharing, it has been a great help!

  • Thanks a lot to this video!!This is indeed enriching to me since I am taking up Special education as my specialization. At first, I was confused and and was having trouble how to construct a DTT Plan but I bet after watching this video I will make some improvements!!

  • awwww your son is adorable! I applied for a full time ABA position and this video was great for me to review the concepts of ABA. Thank you.

  • Technically, the science is behaviorism - ABA's just a therapy technique inspired by behaviorism. And behaviorism is no longer widely accepted as a theory, because we've found scientific evidence that people are way more complicated than behaviorists thought. The current predominant theory is cognitive processing theory, which uses the metaphor of a computer - you put information in, it's processed according to certain regular principles, and a response comes out.

  • @Abnormaldiversity ABA is not just a therapy technique, it's applied behavior analysis, meaning it is the application of the principals of behavior (such as responding is likely to increase if the response behavior is followed directly by a reinforcer, and likely to decrease if followed by punishment) to behavior in the environment which can indeed be incorporated into therapy, and have been done with much success. I've found that behaviorism is fairly wildly accepted.

  • @Abnormaldiversity The cognitive process theory as you've described it seems not to differ that much from behaviorism, in that there is an antecedent (information), behavior (private, thinking behavior), and consequence (response). The only thing that differs is that behaviorists only measure what can be observed. In other words, because we cannot observe and measure a metaphor, we can't say for sure that is what is happening.

  • My 2.5 YO relative has been diagnosed with Autism. the problem I see, and he hasn't started treatment yet, is that he does not sit still! he is always busy running around, checking things out. I don't know how we will get him to sit down for this type of treatment :-(

  • @yaronkl, Even with his running behaviors, it is still possible to get the child to sit down at a table to run therapy. I work with a child who loves to just wonder around the house as a reinforcer. Of course we also focus on getting the child engaged in toys to learn appropriate play. As long as the child's safety is not in danger the therapist could definitely work with that. For example; playing chase. You could also reinforce the child for sitting still at the table as well.

  • @yaronkl A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) should be able to help you (you want a BCBA to train you on how to do it, since otherwise you could make lots of errors for not knowing). Read about Shaping (differential reinforcement of successive approximation of target behavior).

  • That was fantastic. I am a special education teacher, I thought this was so helpful and to the point. I will show it to my staff that are really not familiar with these techniques

  • thanks for the video. A friend told me about it. I've worked as a long term babysitter for 3 different kids with autism. I've worked with their ots but no one has ever told me the name of the "method" I love working with these kids. It's been challenging & rewarding. I want to learn/ train in this as a specialty. Thanks so much.

  • Thank you,!

You are one of the VERY RARE people who dont ask MONEY in order to help other people learn ABA, its so sick that everyone is trying to earn money on our problems. But as a parent you know how its like.

So once again thank you for the work in this video, this is extremly helpful and apreciated. I am working with my son for some time but this thing you sugested about cards to organize, track, measure skills, thats awesome. And I will start doing that! tnx

  • great helpful video. HORRIBLE MUSIC.

  • We know that ABA works in a mechanical fashion - it does help with regards to black&white thinking, how to get a result, how to give a specific answer but can anyone point me to studies that show an improved quality of life in adulthood for the kids that underwent ABA in the 1980's/1990's?

  • @bren49765

Every child is different, every ABA therapist is different. I dont think its possible to perform a trial unless you had two identical kids- one who underwent ABA and the other who did not.

  • @bren49765 there are thousands of research studies out there. Search JABA under full text articles and start looking

  • Thank you for the overview. Helpful.

  • This is a great tape, but there is SO much more to ABA then what is in the Maurice, Green, and Luce book. There are lots of great ABA books including A work in Progress, Overcoming Autism, the newer Lovaas manual, etc. If at all possible, please try to use a BCBA because they typically have the background to truly create an individualized program for your child. A good ABA program cannot come solely from a book.

  • I agree about getting a BCBA but in most areas they are just not available! Most of us have to do what we can for our kiddies.

  • I admire parents who try to do this on their own. It cannot be easy. I only mentioned that for parents who might be able to find a BCBA. I've been a behavior analyst for 20 years and I've worked with several parents who initially did it out of a book. They were intelligent folks doing their best. They felt their programs improved significantly when a BCBA joined the team. It is necessary to truly individualize the program. Thanks for making an excellent informational video about ABA.

  • you can always get a BCBA to oversee your program through video conferencing.

  • What is BCBA...please give me some info?

  • @irishamrep

BCBA stands for "Board Certified Behavior Analyst". If you google that, the website comes up so you can find one on their certificant registry. There are a lot of people claiming to do ABA who have little to no training in it. Finding a BCBA guarantees a certain level of proficiency in ABA. BCBA-D stands for doctoral level BCBA's. There is also an assistant level, but they are not supposed to direct programs, only implement. Hope that helps and good luck!

  • I would love a copy of this video. Are you marketing it for public use?

  • Also try looking up DIR/Floortime by Dr. Greenspan.....in my opinion a much more effective approach

  • Again your opinion.....its not more effective.....at all

  • Definately not more effective, very little evidence backing it up

  • Thank you sooo much for this video!! My oldest daughter is Autistic, and I have been looking into DTT and ABA, but don't have the money to hire a therapist, not to mention there aren't any in our area. I plan to learn all I can to try this in our home, and this video was very informative!!

  • There is a book you should buy that has the entire program in it. It's Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism: A Manual for Parents and Professionals (Paperback) It has the entire program in it! Great for parents trying to do it on their own!

  • Thank you sooo much!! Where do you find this book, and who is the Author? I am definetly interested in learning this, because we simply have to try something new with her. She hurts herself, and has other issues that I would like to try and address. Thanks again!

  • Catherine Maurice (Editor)

Gina Green (Editor), Stephen C. Luce (Editor) Not sure who the actual author is. Just run a google search of the title and you should find it. Also you could contact the local school district (special education program) and ask them if they have a dti program you could get your hands on. They should want to help you since they will be getting your child in the future and all the work you do now should make it easier on them later!

  • Great book also "Parents Education as Autism Therapists: Applied Behavior Analysis in Context". Very well written

  • Thank you so much for making this video. I was recently hired as a part-time Behavior Therapist/Intern to work with children who have autism using the ABA method. I have a background in working with normally developing children, as well as a background in psychology, but I have never worked with children who have autism one-on-one. Great vid!

  • Thanks for video, I am in the processs of being special ed certified and enrolling in an ABA program. I also tutor a Autistic boy and this video will help me in sessions a lot.

  • thank you this was very helpful

  • Very good resource thank you!

  • Thank you SO MUCH for the time you put in putting this together. It HELPED SO much.

  • Great video:) As a Special Education Major and an ABA Therapist myself, I love seeing ABA being used around the country to help children with ASD be successful!

  • thank you for getting back to me about the song !

  • THANKS for the info as a special ed major this really helped me understand ABA for an exam and I hope to work in classrooms with children with MPH/ specifically learning and autistic spectrum disorders Kudos on the great info.

  • I used to provide in home ABA to a wonderful boy with Autism. I was always impressed with his family's dedication and wished other children were as fortunate. If feel the same way about your son - what a wonderful gift you have given him to be so informed, so dedicated, AND so motivated to help others!

I teach doctoral graduate students in clinical psychology and would love to use your video in my class. Is there a way I could obtain a copy to show this wonderful example of ABA?

  • how can i downloaD this video pls?

  • the song is from Forest Gump

  • Could I ask if you know who sings the song or the name of the song on this video? It's a beautiful song.

  • its the theme song from Forrest Gump

  • What???? I guess I don't understand your comments...the video was made to help parents that have little to no resources trying to help their children. I just tried to break it down as simple as possible. Maybe you could explain more what you are trying to convey.

  • Excellent video on discrete trial training and components of it. Motivation and other aspects of intervention are pivotal.

That's all I'm saying or "keep learning" children are always being conditioned and if it works then condition yourself further in what matters to you most.

Success of your child. Learning being success in autism may you lead the way by learning yourself in conditioning procedures and targets that are key.

  • Someone should have shown this to the STUPID state therapist who worked with my son from July 07 to January 08. I learned about ABA/DTT in November 07 and had to move mountains to get the state to do ABA/DTT as well. I read a book and used ABA/DTT to teach my son to point, wave, and look me in the eye starting in November (I am sad I didn't have this video to learn from, but will watch it often to keep me fresh, THANK YOU!). The state caved and started doing ABA/DTT in February 08.

  • well for me i am not just motivated but very thankful to you! your truly a heaven sent. i am thinking of a way to help my 4 year old child getting desperate and confused.and then you came! you just dont know how you helped me financially and emotionally i should have gone looking for an ABA therapists to coach and train me into ABA. NOW ITS SOLVED ALL THANKS TO YOU..i know youll be blessed, our children will be okay soon..you give me hope..

  • wow! i am motivated to do this with my son.
