OMG, this is an exceptional version of that tune. Pat's countryish impro on the middle is particularly tasty and moving. The section from 6'30" to 6'52" just moves me to tears...
@seelanne Danny left the band in the Early 80s when Paul Wertico came in on drums and now teaches percussion in Univ of North Florida. Mark Egan lives in NYC and is a part of the jazz scene there. While they were both skilled - many feel that Wertico and Steve Rodby have contributed more to the band. Hard to tell - as PMG went to so much more in music after these opening LPs.
@dlangegoogle : i know, but dyvix asked about the lineup in this video an here its wihtout any doubt danny gottlieb and egan on bass. Although i like wertico very much and he played Metheny-Music very well for me Danny is THE drummer in the history of PMG. Egan and Rodby both are great, both in her special ways.
This is a wonderful version of this tune. One day it is my hope to gather ALL of the LIVE recordings, bootleg copies or not just to hear the different solos from gig to gig.
this line up is just magic. He did great things since then but indeed the sound of this particular line up is still fresh and original after 3 decades. Great to see this incredible period for Pat, but also for modern music, well documented in this video. Tnks for posting
I think that this album-American Garage was their best. I like the rock beat!!-Great melodies!! I wish Pat would return to this form for a new recording. I know-he is always breaking new ground,etc-but I have never tired of listening to this recording. Do more like it !!!
yup, I love this tune. Its got country, rock, pop, a nod towards steve reich et al (albeit massively simplified) and jazz. Its got a great tune and cool solos (at least album version has, just checking this one out now). My god, what more?
Well, given some of the stories I've heard about Jaco, it COULD have been his, uh, "personality problems".
Also, there may have been legal reasons. Jaco was signed to Columbia, and I get the impression that after Bright Size Life, Pat was looking to have a permanent band, and being on a different record label may have prevented Jaco being involved.
Was he bipolar? Or did he have other psych. issues? Do you know if he was on medication? I was always curious as to his actual diagnosis. And also, do you know anything about the circumstances surrounding his death? Was he beaten to death? I had heard that he died after a fight. Thanks!
Jaco was bipolar, but what I was actually refering more to his chemical abuse problems. When Jaco was sober, he was easily one of the best (if not THE best) bass player around. But when he had a couple drinks (or possibly something stronger), things could go south at any second.
Reportedly, the night he died, Jaco was once again not sober and was causing trouble at a club. So the bouncer dragged him outside and yeah, he literally beat him to death. :-(
Thanks SO much for this vid man, at Onkel Pö I saw PMG for the second time - the first time was in the auditorium of the high school in Rotenburg/Wümme where about a 10o or 120 people were seated as he was doing his american garage tour! There are SO many pictures of it still! Who of us could have dreamt that this young musician would one day be the number one jazz guitarist of the world!?!
Gottlieb what more can you say? Anyone got an idea where and what year the concert pat played with danny on drums and nana vasconcelos on percussion?it appeared once on channel 4 late night music show can remember name
yes! where from? i believe thats the one where they perform goin ahead as falls wichita so withcita falls? the pecussion and voice are from another world
they did a burning rendition of this tune during that tour ae well...nanas perc added a lot...miss those Ludwig Vistalites that Danny player first when I saw them in '78...this was the kit i think he used on Offramp
Seems to be the case with a lot of vids that are originally on VHS tape. Some vids have that "flangey" sound to them as well. Must be something in the transfer process.(?)
Oh my good lord. The earlier clips from this gig (did you post them?) were great but this takes the biscuit. It's like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls or something.
Watching this makes me feel like I'm 17 again. PURE ENERGY! Did these guys really understand 30 years ago how impossibly good they were?

I didn't like this as much as the first album. All at once it manages to be Brubeck, Weather Report, and Emerson Lake and Palmer.

No, it's Mark Egan. I wonder why Pat and Jaco didn't continue to work together after that first album. Jaco didn't pass away until aound '87.
