I think it was a good thing that I liked Magus so much that I didn't want to fight him. Frog looks better as a frog, so why should I want to break his curse and kill Magus? Also, it's not like there is a real reason to avenge Cyrus, since Magus just defended himself, it's not like he ASKED Cyrus to come and try to kill him. And without Magus, Frog would still be this pathetic wimp he was before he was cursed. And Magus and the team always wanted the same thing: Destroy Lavos. So why fight him?
I fought Magus the first time I got to this scene when I was 8 because I was pissed off about him insulting Crono, and after I killed him, my immediate reaction was to reset and do this scene the right way, not even knowing that he was a recruitable character at the time.
@animedude752 You have to get them again. But they keep their stats and equipment, and you keep all items except I think all the key items. The only exception to this I can think of off-hand is that if you had Frog equipped with the Masamune, he'll have the default Iron Blade when you get him in New Game+.
That would be bad ass if all 3 characters died and you had to continue the game with Magus alone. Then you can have him join up with his two chronies Slash and Flea!

I understand powering him down probably wasn't your intention.. but magus should be a joke at this point in the game, he's not supposed to be difficult here, as many people said.. Because the Magus you "kill" in that time is actually the Magus you fight in 600 A.D. and killing that magus would not affect anything, but on the other hand, if they had killed young Janus isntead, then, Cyrus wouldn't be dead....
Look, the game has a lot of unfulfilled paradoxes. I don't think the SNES cartridge would have had enough memory to create a game where everything you did in CT would have a that dramatic of an impact on everything else...
This scene is the only thing that comes as close to Fire Emblem. Warning, if you fight and kill Magus, you will never see him again even if you had a time machine.
Nope, there's not other way to get him afterwards, from what I know of. If you actually kill him, and you've done almost all side quests, etc, you'll get a better ending compared to if you did have him(since he was on the evil side to begin with). However, if you make him join you, and you beat Lavos with ONLY Magus(I mean totally solo), you'll get an even better ending! Pretty hard to do my friend, but possible.
Don't you mean solo with Crono? I've seen a hack out there with Magus replacing Crono, but you can't do that in a standard game.
The ending from a solo is pretty cool, with all these developers represented by game characters complaining about how hard making games is and telling you to get a life. :D (Also FYI, you don't REALLY need to solo for that ending, as Marle will come with you before you talk with Lucca at the teleporters.)

He's really not that great of a character, really. Everyone uses Chrono, and Magus can't use duel techs. Lucca pretty much hands down has Magus beat for duel tech compatibility, and has similar offense..

Well for me Ayla doesn't die any more often than the next person (never). She has some nice dual techs and her 9999 critical hit with the Bronze Fist certainly comes in handy during boss battles. Her ability to charm also makes her a very valuable member. You can stockpile the best armor & helms for everybody and enough Megalixers to last till the rapture.
I usually add him because it's much better to have him on your team than having a stupid amulet that's totally worthless. Sure, it prevents status change, but at this point in the game, not attacks really change your status, or you're too strong to be affected. Also this battle was a piece of cake with Frog! It's harder with the others. And even with the others it's still a piece of cake!
Well you get the Amulet either way, so that's irrelevant. Late in the game you get armor and helmets that protect your status anyway (Nova armor/Prism Helm)... allowing you to make much better use of your accessory slot by means of a Frenzy/Rage Band or Prism Specs. I always add him too just to have everybody, but I don't use him often. He's my 2'nd least favorite character next to Marle. Avg. physical attack, no healing or dual techs. Not all that good IMO.
Every character actually can be pretty good, it depends on your level range. I actually a while ago got Marle to a higher level same range as my other characters, and she can prove to be one of yor better teammates, using strong physical attacks(I'm at a high level)and excellent healing abilities. As for Magus, he's probably my 2nd most used character, I find him very good, especially once he learns Dark Matter. Plus his triple techs are easily some of the best in the game. But Crono's the best.
I just find Marle to be pretty useless because Robo, Frog & Ayla have healing techs too (Slurp Kiss is great) and have better physical attacks and dual techs. You have to waste an accessory slot with a rock to use Magus' triple techs, which I don't like, and he has no dual techs or heals. Not very versatile IMO, but to each his/her own.
Agree Chrono is the best, then I think Ayla, Frog & Robo are close with their own pro's & con's... then Lucca, then Magus, then Marle.
My order would probably be Crono, Magus, Frog, Robo, Marle, Lucca, and then Ayla. I'm actually not a big fan of her. For some reason people to seem to like her but she dies 24/7 with me. My char.s are high levels, but she's STILL low! I don't know why either!
Hard to believe any of your characters are dying at high levels with all the best equipment. All my characters are at level 99. Men wearing Haste Helms & Nova Armor and women with Prism Helms & Dress's. The only attack that can touch me is Hallation but then of course I counter with Frog Flare and a Megalixer :)

It's like a game that is apart of a wannabe zelda series. But they do pretty good and are pretty fun and memorable. It goes Soul Blazer, then Legend of Gaia(or something like that), and last Terranigma. They are all worth playing especially Soul Blazer, simple but addictive.

Actually the Moon Armor is a step up from the Nova Armor...you can get it in the Hero's Grave. If you go to the middle ages and choose no when it asks to open the black box, then go to the present and open it...the Nova Armor will upgrade to the Moon Armor. If you didn't know this already...
Yeah, but the Prism helm does the same thing, and 9+ magic def. So that's the best defense, almost 20+ magic def. and status locking from two items. Basically, it's the best total package defense going, and saves you from using up an accessory slot for Wall Ring or Flea Vest.
But since I didn't know about the trick behind it, I ended up using two Nova Armors anyways.
Ah well, at least the Nova Armors can be used by more characters.
Sure, but if you have the Prism Helm on you're not taking advantage of the "Haste" Helms. More attacks in a shorter amount of time = enemy annihilated before they can attack. Def. & Mag. Def. become irrelevant. I just use Rage Bandanna's or Prism Specs.
Good offense = your best defense IMO. To each his/her own. That's how I prefer my party to be set up.
Come to think of it, I actually decked out Crono in a Haste Helm, Prism Specs, a Nova Armor, and his Rainbow Sword to solo Lavos on my Newgame+. All I needed was the occasional Barrior (For Lavo's ultimate lightning tech), and was good to go..
So, I guess the Prism Helm never even went into the equation. ^_^;
On the other hand, if you're using a Haste Helm, you'd probably want the Nova for the status protections over the Moon Armor, right?
Absolutely, and that's exactly the point I was making for the Nova over the Moon, the status protection. Bottom line, you want at least 1 piece of status protection equipment on everybody. Girls can't wear Nova Armor, so if you want them to have both Haste & Stat Prot. they need Haste Helms + Amulet. Of course in their case it's a matter of deciding whether Haste is better than a Prism Spec or Frenzy Band. If not, then you give them Prism Helm, Prism Dress then one of those 2 accessories.
Bah. This fight is so much better if you duel him 1v1 with Frog.
And as cool as Magus is, I usually kill him for Cyrus. Yeah, he's the anti-hero who is more or less a victim of circumstance, but he still murdered somebody and justice must be served.
They should've made it to where IF you kill Magus, then Glenn should change immediately and be his human form in your party, and give him new techniques...that would've been one thing to add to Trigger
Yes, and that would give players more incentive to kill Magus than simply an amulet. Although, since Magus is by far my favorite character, I still wouldn't fight him. (Sorry Frog).
Magus was a great part of the plot. Love the way they fooled you into that part of the journey. This game was pure awesomeness. Though Magus as a fighter on your side sucks.

It's like a game that is apart of a wannabe zelda series. But they do pretty good and are pretty fun and memorable. It goes Soul Blazer, then Legend of Gaia(or something like that), and last Terranigma. They are all worth playing especially Soul Blazer, simple but addictive.

Actually the Moon Armor is a step up from the Nova Armor...you can get it in the Hero's Grave. If you go to the middle ages and choose no when it asks to open the black box, then go to the present and open it...the Nova Armor will upgrade to the Moon Armor. If you didn't know this already...

The Nova Armor prevents status effects though, which is why I prefer it.

Yeah, but the Prism helm does the same thing, and 9+ magic def. So that's the best defense, almost 20+ magic def. and status locking from two items. Basically, it's the best total package defense going, and saves you from using up an accessory slot for Wall Ring or Flea Vest.
But since I didn't know about the trick behind it, I ended up using two Nova Armors anyways.
Ah well, at least the Nova Armors can be used by more characters.

Sure, but if you have the Prism Helm on you're not taking advantage of the "Haste" Helms. More attacks in a shorter amount of time = enemy annihilated before they can attack. Def. & Mag. Def. become irrelevant. I just use Rage Bandanna's or Prism Specs.
Good offense = your best defense IMO. To each his/her own. That's how I prefer my party to be set up.

I forgot about the Haste Helms, but you're right.
Come to think of it, I actually decked out Crono in a Haste Helm, Prism Specs, a Nova Armor, and his Rainbow Sword to solo Lavos on my Newgame+. All I needed was the occasional Barrior (For Lavo's ultimate lightning tech), and was good to go..
So, I guess the Prism Helm never even went into the equation. ^_^;
On the other hand, if you're using a Haste Helm, you'd probably want the Nova for the status protections over the Moon Armor, right?

Absolutely, and that's exactly the point I was making for the Nova over the Moon, the status protection. Bottom line, you want at least 1 piece of status protection equipment on everybody. Girls can't wear Nova Armor, so if you want them to have both Haste & Stat Prot. they need Haste Helms + Amulet. Of course in their case it's a matter of deciding whether Haste is better than a Prism Spec or Frenzy Band. If not, then you give them Prism Helm, Prism Dress then one of those 2 accessories.

Bah. This fight is so much better if you duel him 1v1 with Frog.
And as cool as Magus is, I usually kill him for Cyrus. Yeah, he's the anti-hero who is more or less a victim of circumstance, but he still murdered somebody and justice must be served.

They should've made it to where IF you kill Magus, then Glenn should change immediately and be his human form in your party, and give him new techniques...that would've been one thing to add to Trigger

Yes, and that would give players more incentive to kill Magus than simply an amulet. Although, since Magus is by far my favorite character, I still wouldn't fight him. (Sorry Frog).

Naw, Crono is all around better because magus needs his mp so much, but Crono has about 50% critical hit rate after you get rainbow specs.

Magus was a great part of the plot. Love the way they fooled you into that part of the journey. This game was pure awesomeness. Though Magus as a fighter on your side sucks.
