Becquerels are complicated method of determining total radiation released based on the various isotopic radionuclides. Yes, if you have gotten irradiated with alpha and beta irradiated dust you need to decontaminate yourself so you dont carry it into your house, ingest it, inhale it. In other words it is irradiated dust and molecules. If you are exposed to gamma it passes right through you decimating cells----it's in and out. Acute one time exposure(depending on the dose) u might live or just get cancer, but cells can regenerate. However, continuous gamma exposure OR beta and alpha ingestion and you're screwed.

considering that japan is an island, why do they not take some aircraft carriers, and put trifolding solar panels on them, sail em out of sight of people on the coast, and unfold it, kind of like trifold screens. center one on the top of the ship and one to either side. OK, this might be a silly question, but those that have gotten a large dose, a potentially lethal dose of radiation.....are they then themselves radioactively bad for others? i mean will they give off radiation to others who may care for them as they are ill or die? I'm curious about that.

They have comforting headlines like: Japan report: “Nuclear fuel has melted in three reactors” — Risk of “massive radioactive release”. The risk of a massive radioactive release is real, not fear-mongering. There should be a massive global effort to solve this problem, even though some of the effects have already taken place and will last millions of years.
