@JordanEagar How do you know? You can't see what she's looking at, can you?? Maybe the people behind the camera are just following her. Instructional videos are just meant to be fun. C'mon Jordan Let's see you - Just Do it! :))))
i starting to just belly dance without any teachings, u just move ur hips in different ways, but i want to someday be like a pro at it lol so i'm seeing if there's any moves i haven't tried. i need to get one of those things that tie around ur hips lol
I learned the belly dance from my aunt when I was about 2 years old and she kept on teaching me so now I know all these moves and its so easy now I do it without thinking like just go with the music :)
is there supposed to be some sort of footwork for this? Because my teacher says you should twist your foot and snap it back straight as you make the hip movement. It feels too structured for me so I was just wondering (:
lol that's the 1st time 4 me 2 kno it's called the Egyptian walk..lol..but hell yeah belly dancing 4 Egyptian gurls is as easy as ABC hehe (4 most of them at least) even if they r 2 conservative 2 dance in public
All she does is put her legs out one at a time and pushes her heals the way she pushes her hips. Its not very complicating once you get used to it :) i add my own moves to this. Will have videos soon :)
This is just not workin for me...I have no idea why either...I think it may be because my upper body is weak as a baby...lol...noticed that when I was doin her rib cage exercise.
i agree. these are hip lifts with a twist and shimmy, not a wrong move but definitely not egyptian walk. The way i was taught is more like hagallah. The way i teach it is like walking on soft toffee with the knee and foot sinking down slightly but with ribcage and upper carriage lifted, and a slight shimmy as you go from one foot to the other. Difficult to describe, maybe i should do a video;)
i agree spershall! what i learned as egyptian walk has emphasis on the hip going down not up.
The way i teach it, its difficult to explain in just words [maybe i should do a video;)] make sure posture/carriage are good, imagine walking on soft toffee so that your foot and knee sink down slightly as you walk and do a slight shimmy as you change from one foot to the other. Its sometimes known as haggallah the way i was taught.
I know most of this stuff right off the bat. Its wierd. I have never ever taken a class on belly dancing before. Its very natural. And I have no culture in that area either.
I feel really jerky doing this to start off....getting the belt jangle...but keeping the posture is difficult...(im not a young women, so thats my excuse...LOL)
so my hips will do what hers are doing, but my posture is horrible! its so hard for me to keep my chest out and shoulders back. Argh, I wanna learn harder stuff, but I need to get the fundamentals down first. Blast.
This is the trouble with bellydance - there are no 'set' names for the moves. I would call this a travelling hip push - it doesn't look like an egyptian walk the way I was taught it. This is a lovely move, but surely someone somewhere, has to start making one name for one move rather than us all arguing over the name of each move!! ballet had the right idea... !
What she's doing is NOT a 3/4 shimmy, for those saying it is! In a 3/4 shimmy the hip goes up, then out, then down. In this the hip goes forward and back.
My hips do not move like this!!! Is this something that gets better with practice? Will my hips ever cooperate??? I don't look remotely like this women. I look as though I am having a seizure and my "faithful" dog has just ran from the room. Will I ever improve?
LOL - I feel the exact same way!!! I think with practice you will eventually get it. I certainly hope so in my case as well! I want to get the jingly hip scarf.
You will get better. It's just one little thing you're missing in the way you're trying to pull off the moves. Once you get it, it will be so easy. It took me forever to learn the hip roll, but I finally got it, the mistake was I wasn't bending my knees enough. Now, it's so easy. You'll see...
I was taught that an egyptian walk is more like shimmying while walking(although not just that). what she is doing appears to be more of a hip lift, after which you can take a step.
What's shown here, I would call a 'travelling forward hip lift'.
What I know an eyptian walk to be is - step (down on) R foot, flick R hip out and in, step through L foot (with raised hip), step (down on) L foot, flick L hip out and in, step through R foot(with raised R hip), etc, etc, etc. And generally it's one of those moves where the faster you go, the easier it becomes (strange, but true).
If that's what you would call a 3/4 (walking)shimmy, then we're on the same page :)
i don't want to be unnice, but i insist egyptian walk is exactly a walk in 3/4 shimmy-your hip goes up and down AT THE SAME TIME you move the correspondant foot, litteraly walking
i was taught that the egyptian walk was eh how do i describe it, an actual walk with somewhat moving your hips in a completly (!) different way and holding your hands well, the egyptian way...yeah...i..im so good at explaining.
@singingjeca Ummm... if you actually read my comment, and a few above mine, you would see my post was in defense of the video. Instructional video vs. fashion show. I'm sorry you missed that... I thought it was quite clear :) Also, while I am VERY rusty right now due to medical conditions and, therefore, forced lack of practice I did take belly dance classes for about 5 years. Just sayin' :-)

Yeah, it doesn't look anything like the one they did in either of the two courses I took.
I think the problem is various teachers call moves different things. She probably has another name for the step we learned.
