I would probably need a lot of music education to know what critics find objectionable in this performance. To my ears, there is no version of Ode to Joy on the internet which comes close. Carmen and Carla hitting those high notes with that much power is enough to bring tears of emotion. If someone can explain to me what they find objectionable, I'd like to hear it.

Furchtbar. Fick dich Andre ! Geschmacklos
This seems badly performed, and the arrangement detracts very much from the original. Subtlety and richness seems to have been replaced by kitsch and fairly simplistic harmonization.
For people who don't like to see André Rieu criticised. Look up Benjamin Zanders TED talk on classical music. The fast is, this interpretation of Beethoven 9th is poor, partly because Rieu re-wrote the piece, there is no range in emotion ( how can you have any emotion when you look so bored?), the soloiste have little control on their voices.
Some will say: why care? Well I'm only going to live a certain number of years, I might as well listen to a great interpretation.
@mudnerd written in 1785 it is not the easiest German as you can imagine. You would find translations in youtube by searching or otherwise may know the song "Come Sing a Song of Joy " of the 1970s, which is a free but nice transformation of the content / message.

This is the perfect storm of videos. The famous music and vocals chosen by Beethoven for the finale of his 9th symphony. Ultimate production, converting a square in Tuscany, into a concert hall. Astoundingly good singers. The only minus is a plus ...those 2 girls can produce such an epic vocal performance while looking like they are snoozing through it. Like somebody running a 4 minute mile without breaking a sweat and with a calm expression on their face.
I like people that critise Andre Rieu. The simple fact is some people think classical music makes them superior and elitist and should only be played by stuffy orchestras to be any good. At least Andre has love of loath him made it a damm sight more accessible them some knob head in the New York Phil, London Phil or Berlin Phil. The only thing that devalues music are snobs that think it should only be played by a chosen select few.
How to put this diplomatically. Hmm, those of you who post negative comments about Andre and his orchestra are nothing more than boors and egotists. You think you know it all, and guess what? You don't. I attended a concert given by Andre', and it was fantastic. Fun, joyful, entertaining, and there were no curse words or bad behavior, either by the orchestra or in the audience. I know, hard to picture in today's world. Anyways, Andre' and all the members actually were enjoying themselves Bravo!
While this is classical music it lack a certain quality that many people come associate with this music. Personally, I love Karajan's composition with the Berlin Phil. But this piece is not that good. On the other hand this to many would be a first introduction to classical music so it does bring people who would otherwise pass Classical music off, in through the door.
The music is ok..actually pretty good..But the singers seem a bit 'spaced out'..look rather depressed & sad...I see um..HELLO, NO JOY ! ..Whats up with that..Smile people ! Would it kill you to show some joy ?!

It sounds as if you are giving a performance of a fictitious US postcode to a Dutch citizen. Which of course doesn't impress me, especially as it is accompanied by an awful discord consisting of an almost endless row of exclamation marks, each of which amplifies the discord.
You can dislike Andre Rieu as much as you want, but eventually you have to admit that he is a giftet musician, an awesome host and has some pretty neat ideas of how to make "the real old oldies" loveable and hip in this mainstream Aera of ours.

It's always tough to rearrange the greatest symphony ever written - especially for another large ensemble. It's a good effort and a great performance, but I prefer the original. The snare drums and the short bursts of brass somehow cheapen the sound - almost like he was trying to make the ensemble sound larger than it actually was. Otherwise, it was quite good, and it's always interesting to hear different arrangements. JMO

I can't believe the arrogance of some of you people! Why can't you be happy that this type of music is being displayed and accepted? Do you feel that the 'common man' should never tread on your intrerests? Do you feel that maybe a 'commoner' with knowledge like this is a threat? Would you be happier if nobody listened to this type of music except for rich-ass-fags who understand nothing? Maybe you should go to niggertown and try to present your case there. I'm sure they'd give you respect. not.
@ClassicalRelated Thanks for the post but do you feel you really need the support of racist fascists like 88panzer ? Don't you think Bethoeven is far deeper than Schiller's words which talks about brotherhood of men and awe towards the Lord?
@88Panzzer I would sign my name to everything you wrote until the last two sentences!
"niggertown"? Either stop drinking or travel the world a bit you racist shit! People like you drive people away from great music that speaks to everybody, Got that little dick?
@88Panzzer I agree overall with your comment, but expressions like "rich ass fags" and "niggertown" fly in the face of the theme of this work: universal brotherhood. People of all races and all walks of life like Andre Rieu and Beethoven, including gay men and women and African Americans.
To all those critics complaining about the 2 girls not having any stage personality, bear in mind that they are Brazilians, so it cannot be that easy to be singing in German in front of so many people.
Unfortunately, not very many people realise the grandour of classical music, particularly that of Beethoven. Those who really do, I presume, should not be personally insulted by performance of Rieu, as this is just an small attempt to bring the best what mankind has in a way for masses to recall and get closer to what they have so quickly forgotten in this callous world. This is not a devaluation of Ludwig's genius...
And as soon as they do realise that this is what we all need so much, here are the original, stuck-to-note performances of Karayan, Toscanini, Furtwengler, Bernstein etc.
@gaffster787 Unfortunately, not very many people realise the grandour of classical music, particularly that of Beethoven. I think there is room in the world of music for the straight-to-score performances - which must never be swept from the board - and then "takes" like this joyous setting by André Rieu, who should not be critised for popularising great works.
I am sick of all these people who think they know Beethoven. This is and remains a very good version, and good riddance to anyone who discredits this version without even taking the trouble to provide a PROPER argument. Messages will be deleted and users simply blocked if they continue to do so. This is a channel for conducting considered arguments. It is not a platform for failed jockeys trying to push their hobby horses.
OMG you hypocrite this is GHASTLY like a TV track for Old ladies in Space and you write and tell the public ''channel for conducting considered arguments. It is not a platform for failed jockeys trying to push their hobby horses.''
@pot2peein Please provide considered arguments. You don't understand a thing about my jockeys pushing hobby horses' argument. You haven't met Beethoven in person. Nor have any of the other detractors. Yet, you all all pretend you know how Beethoven would have reacted if he were alive today, I tell you, he would be a punker who couldn't care less about Rieu. Beethoven was a rebel, in case you didn't know. Stop polluting my channel with your sickening 'Beethoven would turn in his grave' arguments.
@pot2peein PS Be VERY considerate in your answer. This channel doesn't need nincompoops, and I have already banned numerous other people I didn't like. Go and spend your time constructively, will you? I ahve already wasted more than enough of my time on dealing with nincompoops without being called a hypocrite by someone who doesn't know what he or she is talking about.
UP WITH BEETHOVEN. DOWN WITH ALL THE NERDS PRETENDING TO KNOW WHAT BEETHOVEN WOULD DISLIKE TODAY.
@pot2peein PS I apologise. I misspelt the word 'have' in my previous message. I really wish i would have spelt 'have' rather than 'ahve'. That's about the level of consideration you are worthy of ;D.
By the way, what are? A 'he', a 'she' or an 'it'? Considering the level of your recent argument, I am unescapably drawn to the 'it' conclusion.
@an0nim0uz Your message wiill be deleted. Check my latest post ro understand why I am banning you permanently. Presumably your ultra-sensitive ears can't stand alternative interpretations without being insulted.
@asmaib Please use decent language. I disapprove of anything that is derived of the word 'fuck'. You will have to find a different identity though to answer me. People like you aren't welcome here.
@ClassicalRelated But it is a crime, to state otherwise is arrogant. Even knowledgable people can mess up pretty badly, so what "level" one is on is irrelevant. The added horrific voices makes Beethoven roll in his grave, the arrangement is shit, that why it's a crime.
@Herke83 Your suggestion that André Rieu's treatment of the song is a crime (and that to disagree with this point of view is arrogant criminality) only reflects your own arrogance and criminality. As I don't like criminals posting on my channel (and even less so if they turn out to adopt arrogance as their main attitude).
Really, claiming knowledge that Beethoven would roll in his grave is suggesting supernatural contact with the dead about what they like or not. Now that's arrogance.
People using lights, fireworks and all these stuff probably don't know that this music itself is powerful enough to express every kind of feelings. Very poor direction by rieu
If anything I can't believe that much love & honesty is left in the world but even though I am alone I always have music that keeps me close to God & I can honestly see the pristine glory & honor in such a dignified masterpiece of musical genius that such brilliance personifies mankind & in full mystical immortality!! I hope that one day I be driven to woman of my dreams under the presence of such brilliance the music gives I in as such as is a very invigorating manner. Thank You Germany.
Armes Deutschland!
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom shoud thank Beethoven and Schiller for the song and lyrics. Go Europe!
My computer wakes me up every morning with this. It is my all time favorite. It magnifies the composer and Andre delivers the best vocalists and the best orchestra as a team with one voice. I am proud that beauty like this exists. And I am thankful that I have it every day.
I LOVE ANDREhe is the best person ever player I LOVE his melody I LOVE his violine wow wow how he playing it just the best on earth. No one needs big ear to listen and know who playing what...long live Andre
For me it simply says: some people like it, other don´t. Nothing more. I really love this song, but not this interpretation. :)
Imho every song can be performed in a more or less beautiful way. There is another version by rieu and the "opera babes", it´s much more *drama*, and, for the ones who like that: in a universal language, too. :)
Here are lots of german comments, I´m sorry that specially mine bothered you. Never mind. :)
Responding is a waste of time, and you're being confrontational. Responses on YT are a crapshoot anyway, so equating people liking this pieces with disagreeing with him is silly. And the crack about universal language was just immature. He made a valid point, free of snark and personal attack; you shouldn't mock him for it.
If this is an ode to joy why are their faces so serious?

@88Panzzer I agree overall with your comment, but expressions like "rich ass fags" and "niggertown" fly in the face of the theme of this work: universal brotherhood. People of all races and all walks of life like Andre Rieu and Beethoven, including gay men and women and African Americans.

It's just the matter of time.

Karajan's Version Is Better Than "ANDRE RIEU VERSION"!!^^
Karajanism 1 year ago
@gaffster787

It is not a platform for failed jockeys trying to push their hobby horses.''
pot2peein 1 year ago
@pot2peein Please provide considered arguments. You don't understand a thing about my jockeys pushing hobby horses' argument. You haven't met Beethoven in person. Nor have any of the other detractors. Yet, you all all pretend you know how Beethoven would have reacted if he were alive today, I tell you, he would be a punker who couldn't care less about Rieu. Beethoven was a rebel, in case you didn't know. Stop polluting my channel with your sickening 'Beethoven would turn in his grave' arguments.
ClassicalRelated 1 year ago
@pot2peein PS Be VERY considerate in your answer. This channel doesn't need nincompoops, and I have already banned numerous other people I didn't like. Go and spend your time constructively, will you? I ahve already wasted more than enough of my time on dealing with nincompoops without being called a hypocrite by someone who doesn't know what he or she is talking about.
UP WITH BEETHOVEN. DOWN WITH ALL THE NERDS PRETENDING TO KNOW WHAT BEETHOVEN WOULD DISLIKE TODAY.
ClassicalRelated 1 year ago
@pot2peein PS I apologise. I misspelt the word 'have' in my previous message. I really wish i would have spelt 'have' rather than 'ahve'. That's about the level of consideration you are worthy of ;D.
By the way, what are? A 'he', a 'she' or an 'it'? Considering the level of your recent argument, I am unescapably drawn to the 'it' conclusion.

This is called a crime
wukillah 1 year ago 13
@wukillah Why? Because your majesty condescends to the level of acknowledging that Andre Rieu more than matches you?
I don't care two hoots about you dislikung this. You are plainly arrogant.
ClassicalRelated 1 year ago
@ClassicalRelated But it is a crime, to state otherwise is arrogant. Even knowledgable people can mess up pretty badly, so what "level" one is on is irrelevant. The added horrific voices makes Beethoven roll in his grave, the arrangement is shit, that why it's a crime.
Herke83 7 months ago
@Herke83 Your suggestion that André Rieu's treatment of the song is a crime (and that to disagree with this point of view is arrogant criminality) only reflects your own arrogance and criminality. As I don't like criminals posting on my channel (and even less so if they turn out to adopt arrogance as their main attitude).
Really, claiming knowledge that Beethoven would roll in his grave is suggesting supernatural contact with the dead about what they like or not. Now that's arrogance.

@MsDarkblade that's the point: André Rieu wants to create a situation of contrast to make it funny.

I hope that one day I be driven to woman of my dreams under the presence of such brilliance the music gives I in as such as is a very invigorating manner. Thank You Germany.

90Einstein 1 year ago
Armes Deutschland!

Hey CR, thanks for your comment.
Never mind. :)
lineerlay 2 years ago
A majority of visitors here disagrees with you. Does that say anything about the majority, or does it say something about you being out of touch?
Frankly, ANY way to perform this song of mankind IS THE RIGHT WAY.
Sorry if it doesn't match your exalted views of this song.
And sorry, I know enough about German to understand what you are saying. But not enough to respond to you in your language.
Schade that you are wasting your time here. Schade that you can't use a universal language.
ClassicalRelated 2 years ago
@ClassicalRelated so what is he talking about please? what is he saying? something disgusting about this version?
Leinerz 1 year ago
@ClassicalRelated
Responding is a waste of time, and you're being confrontational. Responses on YT are a crapshoot anyway, so equating people liking this pieces with disagreeing with him is silly. And the crack about universal language was just immature. He made a valid point, free of snark and personal attack; you shouldn't mock him for it.
harlequin2262 1 year ago
@ClassicalRelated We're not sorry that this "song" doesn't match our exalted views of it, we're sorry it doesn't match Beethoven's.
Also, just because the majority believes something is right doesn't make it right, it makes it common place.
