One of my favorite early Buddy Charts. Got to see him do it live in Carnegie Hall with Phil Griess my teacher in about the 6th row. Miss him and that band. I got to see Jerry Lewis do the same as Dom in Jimmy's on 52nd street to Love for Sale(1974). Nothing like those days and those artists. So much talent and passion. Thank you for posting.
You are right, it was the Mike Douglas Show. Buddy liked Dom, as they had a lot of fun on the panel and they were friends from before. I have heard from those in the band that it was a great time with nothing but laughs from the 6:00 am soundcheck to taping four hours later.
I'm betting that was the Mike Douglas show since it was out of Philly. I'm sure Buddy appreciated Dom DeLeuise fooling around at the end. And knowing Buddy he probably told him so. :)
lead trumpet the guy who plays the solos or the guy who plays the high notes. And if so does that make the 1st.the solo player(lead) & the 2nd the high note guy with the 3rd & 4th playing the rest?
A big band is only as good as the drummer & the trumpet section IMO
I have an LP of the Killer Force band rec. live in warsaw from1977 polish label and the trumpet lineup is as given on the sleeve notes:D.Stahl,D.Pratt,R.Konikoff & J Marshall,What a band
Mike, The lead trumpet plays the higher part, or melody. He is usually also the high note guy. Usually the third of fourth trumpet is the jazz soloist. However in this band all the guys had good chops (although nobody could do it nearly as well as Dave) and some hot jazz, making this a rare section. The precision with which they played was what inspired Buddy to call them the killer force. It's basically the same band as the Live In Poland album, with John Marshall in for Larry Moses.
@Edinski1 Your right it is usually the lead that plays the high notes, but it is the second player that is called the jazz player and sometimes the fourth is as well, and the third chair usually can scream, that is in a typical big band, but this is not a typical band, your right all these guys have amazing chops
This may be in 3/4 time but I don't see nobody doing a waltz to it!!! What a fantastic mother-f***ing band. And of course Buddy drives it like no other cat.
doesn't necessarily have to be buddy;s killer force, but i'm Dave's son and was hoping to get some of the old videos i just recently lost due to a computer crash.
Look for Dave Stahl on the Buddy Rich DVD "Live At The 1982 Montreal Jazz Festival" - can't believe you didn't know that. And your his son?
He did some great lead stuff on that video and you'll enjoy seeing Buddy get pissed at him and the other soloist (Chris Pasin?) when they miss their queue after Buddy's solo on "Bob Mintzer's "Good News". It's Priceless!
Actually, in Buddy's band it was always left to right 2nd, 1st, 3rd and 4th. That goes all the way back to 1966 with2nd then 1st with Chuck Findley and Bobby Shew, through Jeff Stout and Lin Biviano, Greg Hopkins and Charley Davis, and all of the others right up to Greg Gisbert and Eric Myrashiro in the last band.
I have been lucky enough to see all of those bands live and they were all great!
When the big band re-formed in early 1975, after Buddy had used the small group for a couple years, it was, left to right, third, first, second and fourth for at least three years. I know this. Maybe before that and after that it was as you say, but in this clip it was third, first, second and fourth.
I would have thought that Dean Pratt would be on our far left since he was the 2nd trumpet in that band and that is the traditional placing for 2nd. Great section, great band.
This reminds me of Maynard's band in the 60s when they played Three More Foxes, letting the trumpets loose.I saw it with Don Ellis, Don Rader and all the other great trumpet sections he had .
Dom Deluise is an absolute crackup !
