only music knows how to speak to the world...i am from Greece and this song is one of the last 2 things i took with me when i left my small village looking for a job in a big city, tryin to make it for a living...the other thing i took was a picture of my family...i'll never forget...i promise...
when i was at the sage watching this i had a tear in my eye, cuz thinking my dad like the song frm the album moffou ana na ming n he recorded it off the radio then a week later he passed away so now when ever i listen to salif keita makes me think of him
@screamingcream How you know? Yes this meant something special to Salif. He created this song some 25 years before he actually recorded it in 1995. This meaning of this song is actually deeper than anyone may think . It was inspired by the condition in which Salif lived in Bamako (late 1960) after leaving his native village, Djoliba. He is essentially comparing the communal and sympathetic life of village with the rough selfish life of the big city (no mercy).
@Saliffan Life in village would still represent the past (Folon) whereas life in the big city represented the present (Sissan). Salif suffered some years with no help and he was in despair and he slept on the street in Bamako.
majestic!

This song must be both painful and melancholic at the same time.
Especially when the word means "In the past..."

I was right on the front row and had my camera ready. Shame it was shaky at the start.
