  • I dont cry at this movie no matter how sad it is

  • WHY'D I HAVE TO WANDER INTO THE TOP COMMENT NOW IM SCREWED D:<

  • Just came here from watch hetalia, thinking that war was one big fun argument. Saw this, and now I think it's one big violent argument between soldiers and politicians, with civilians caught in the bloody middle.

  • *First dialogue* This is gonna be depressing...

  • i cried when i saw it!

  • i cant even make it three minutes without crying!

Damn this movie! its too frigging sad and true!

  • So sad

  • heartbreaking..

  • I haven't cried this hard for a movie since ever. It's coming out on new-edition DVD on March 6th, so you won't have to pay 100 dollars for a copy! Preorder your copy now!

  • THAT AUNT IS SUCH A BITCH!

  • Why is the little girl as pale as a dead person 0.0

  • At the end when Setsuko keeps saying "Seita" I continue to cry harder. I swear i'm at that point where i can't even breathe i'm crying so hard!

  • I officially hate WWII

this is such a sad movie...i can't even finish watching it!!!!

  • NO JOKE BUT THIS FILM IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY IF U DNT BELIEVE ME THEN SEARCH IT URSELF

  • THIS IS SO SAD. HE REALLY WAS A GOOD BROTHER. THIS IS THE MOST SADDEST MOVIE EVER.

  • my gosh.. i swear whenever she says seita it sounds almost like satan.

  • I will never look at WWII the same way again, the fate of Setsuko reminded me of my 2 kid sisters and baby sister; I will never take them for granted.

  • Seita loved his sister and was not that bad of a slacker as some of the other characters suggest but he clearly lacked the maturity to look after a child on his own.

  • I hate their aunt.

  • Thanks for uploading, I have an esay to write about this

Don't know how I would write it without the access to the movie!

  • whoever disliked this video is a moron and should go die in a hole

  • Iv been fighting tears since about 20 mins in.....just knew this would be a heart breaker and it truly is. Such sweet sadness...

  • I am sad now.

  • Why did they die

  • the one film you can never watch again even if you wanted to...

  • i swear i will not throw food again :'(

  • @bigman1171 spelling when making accusations like this, or you just look stupid.

On a side note, I think there may be more "whores", as you so elegantly put it, in America. Just a thought.

  • @bigman1171 I think you are looking from a very prejudiced standpoint. The Japanese are no more evil than any other country or people. For instance, how about when the European settlers massacred the indigenous people of the country now known as the USA, or when Christian Europeans persecuted Muslims and Jews. You should actually learn things in History classes, so you can avoid looking like an ignorant child when making comments like this. By the way, you really should use correct grammar and

  • Islam invades Japan so they cam start a jihad against anyone who isnt muslim or christian.

Plus Japanese women are whores, for they have loads of sexual diseases

  • @bigman1171 i swear ur one of the most retarded individuals in the world.

  • this movie is so sad :( FUCK THE AUNT!

  • 5 min into the movie and I'm already sobbing :/

  • One of my favorite films as of now. I literally cried in so many parts of this and it just breaks my heart.. )': The aunt pissed me off the most.

  • Are they resting in peace or are they there for all eternity? Since the city is all rebuilt and new were they there watching he entire time from heaven or are they not able to go?

  • where do u get fireflies i wanna get 1

  • I.... my heart just died.... D':

  • im crying my eyes out :'( i knew something like this was gonna happen but i didn't know it was gonna be this sad!! AWWWWWW!!!! :'((((((((((((

  • There is no one more innocent than a child. And there is no crime worse than harming one.

In the beginning, we are all the same. We have made no conscious choices for good or for evil. We are untainted and highly impressionable. From then on, we are products of our own free will and our socialization.

  • @juicylime777 Setsuko was a child. A young girl who lost her father, her mother, her brother, and her own life due to war. And she did nothing wrong. She did not deserve what she got. Her only "crime" was being born in Japan. War is tragic. It harms both the innocent and the guilty. Remember that when propaganda tries to demonize other nations and our own.

  • Comment removed

  • how can people compare this with pearl harbor ??

  • @SAMURAlGUN because their stupid

  • fuck america

  • @SAMURAlGUN Why?

  • so gay .... they bomb us and we throw flaming sticks at them .... -_- and juicy they did diserve it the government needs to think about the innocent people before doing these things so it is japans fault that this happened

  • @GrieferKing007 you dont have any right to say that somebody deserves to get bombed or burned. You were not there to expirience those things. Gosh why do idiots like you think that way..People like you are the reason why our world is far from being a nice place.

  • @GrieferKing007 how is this gay no one deserves to go through this no matter what the reason if someone has to be at fault then i guess everyone is.DONT LEAVE STUPID COMMENTS and if u hate it dont watch it or leave a comment

  • @GrieferKing007 how the U.S started it dipshit

  • I felt sad but did not cry, takes more than this to make me cry.

  • Its touching.. From the reviews I really expected to cry,It really was sad,but not a tear poor out of my eye and that makes me sad, like if I had no felings :'(

  • I came into this movie thinking I wasn't gonna be another one of those criers....MAN WAS I WRONG....soo freakin depressing :(

  • The director was right, He wasn't shooting an Anti-War movie. Kids could have lived if they wanted to.

  • man freaking american never fight free...we all know that all they good is bombing another country...just like the war in vietnam- they spend ton of billlions of dollars just on bomb alone, and yet they still lose the war...fighting on war, american stand no chance with any country, period.

  • @thaivo24 no one can understand what you just said

  • what the melody in the starting called?????

  • I think the part that really gets to me is that the author, Akiyuki Nosaka, wrote Grave of the Fireflies based on his own personal experience at the end of World War II. He felt guilty that his sister died from malnourishment and this was both an apology to her and a way for him to get past it. The fact that Seita dies is a pretty good indication of how Akiyuki must have felt for surviving.

  • @FlyingSharkosaurus THANKS FOR RUINING THE MOVlE >.>

  • @ThePopgunman How does that ruin the movie? Their souls were wandering around at the beginning of the movie... pretty good indicator they both were going to die.

  • Everyone deserves to eat. 1% with the wealth.. How did we let that happen?

  • i watched this movie a few years ago...now i just only think back the scenes of this movie,my tears appear in my eyes and i cant stop crying everytime i watch it...

  • OH i get it, she woke up where she died at the end

  • @MikoAkau at first i did not get as well but i understood too in the end at list they are together now

  • IF YOU DIDN"T CRY YOU HAVE NO SOUL!!!!!

  • This is a rarity. I'm crying right now. :'( Why Setsuko?

  • I cried sooo much...

  • @SuperStarLocks this is some of the movie that made me cry in side

  • Syria )':

  • WHO WANNA LICK ON MY HAIRY NUTSACK?

  • Dont't forget everyone, the story in this movie is a reality for most people in countries like Somalia, where kids die in great numbers everyday due to malnutrition and poor healthcare. So many comments seem like they were written in complete ignorance.

  • english dub, no thanks.

  • Simply one of my top ten, and going to buy it on DVD.

It emphasized on the bond those two had which really moved me.

  • Let's put nationalism and sadness out of the way for a second and look at this from an objective standpoint. Yes, war in general is horrible. This is one of the many movies that hit that point home so thoroughly. That said, this was also a war of attrition--a different type of war not seen in this day and age. As an infantryman in the U.S. Army, however, I can see how firebombings were so brutally effective. They devastated infrastructure, industry, and agriculture and DEEPLY effected morale...

  • Even so, that doesn't make this tactic any less awful... even knowing the reasons behind it, sometimes I wonder if the there was another way to win that war... what dictated the use of such an brutal tactic...

  • That aunt was such an a-hole! You don't talk down on kids who lost their mother... She caused both their deaths! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

  • Oh this is the whole movie! I all this tragedy could have been avoided if he swallowed his pride and obeyed the rules of the house. Once I realized that, so much sadness washed away. For the sake of your sister, just endure all the bullshit.

Pride was the enemy here and it cost him everything.

  • I'm pretty damn sure that the bombs were nowhere near Kobe...

  • @heystripper On March 17, 1945, 331 American B-29 bombers launched a firebombing attack against the city of Kobe, Japan. Of the city's residents, 8,841 were confirmed to have been killed in the resulting firestorms, which destroyed an area of three square miles and included 21% of Kobe's urban area. At the time, the city covered an area of 14 square miles (36 km²). More than 650,000 people had their homes destroyed, and the homes of another million people were damaged.

  • @RexSpec Ack, sorry...for some reason I had it in my mind that this was about one of the atomic bomb attacks (>.<) after I posted this comment I talked to my boyfriend about this movie since he directed me here (he's from Kobe) and he said that Kobe was heavily bombed (not atomically, just normally) and I felt really stupid for my comment. I forgot to say, though, thanks for posting it! It's both tragic and beautiful simultaneously.

  • @heystripper No trouble. My condolences and respects.

  • I'm not saying this after watching this movie but i think it's well known today that the official terrorist country is usa aka united shits of america !

  • It hurts. It hurts so much. Oh god... it's so sad. It's so painful. Why did this kind of thing have to happen?

  • OMG THANK YOU IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS MOVIE EVERYWHERE YOU JUST MADE MY DAY

  • No!!!!!!!!! That was WAY too sad!!!!!!!!!!

  • My sister said this was the worst movie ever and im just like "why?" and she shows me the clip where the girl dies and shes like "THATS why" and then im crying like a baby.

  • The only thing i can say about war is "An eye for an eye makes us all blind"

  • Found out about this movie in my ib HOTA class. came home. watched it. CANNOT stop bawlin.

Children are the greatest victims of war.

  • For all those who say that Japan deserved for it got..

We have to understand that a nation's government does not speak for all of its people. Japan killed many Americans at Pearl Harbor. Does that make it ok for us to kill children in Japan? Did Setsuko choose to bomb Pearl Harbor? Did she choose to be born in Japan? Is it right for us to kill her?

Stop seeing things in terms of the made made creations called countries and start seeing that there are individuals, too.

  • @juicylime777 Well what are you suppose to do exactly? If Japan literally rapes millions of Chinese in the Rape of Nankng and other atrocities and then attacks the Americans what are you supposed to do? Not only were many civilains ready to fight but they were ready to die. I understand the civilains didnt really understand because they were lied to by their government. But you cant say; 'Japan Stop' over and over while they blow up yoru country and expect progress.

  • @DarPower1 wow ur dumb the americans started it by taking away oil and then 4 the americans 2 win they had to drop a atom bomb. just pathetic.

  • @MrAnimefreak1992 In reality the Japanese started it by joining up with mass murderers then attacked America and bitches because they lost their cities and islands. Japan was just being retarded all around

  • @DarPower1 dude ur just dumb japan wanted more resources and germany said they would help with it and the U.S took away japans trading oil. thats why theres pearl harbor. so ur the retard for not learning history.

  • @juicylime777 Agreed. Not all Japanese were responsible for all the horrible things that happened during WW2 in Asia. Many of them are good people!

  • @juicylime777 I see your point ... but neither side was right or wrong for anything they did.

  • @BenjaminKuruga Both sides were wrong. There is no beauty in war. There is no right when it comes to taking innocent lives.

  • @juicylime777 I don't no where I heard it but I heard once that there is no reality, only perception.

  • oh my god, im feeling so sad

  • War isn't necessary. Only love is necessary for humanity to flourish.

  • @inuyasha8888

War is necessary at times, it would be foolish to think otherwise. How often has war been made for the sake of freedom let alone peace? When war comes to you, you either surrender or make war.

  • this is a good movie im crying so much i cant even think what would do if this happened to my sister or mother.

  • Its easy to say that war is wrong, morally and ethically of coarse it is I mean this film is a testament to the horrors of war that outstretch the battlefield... but it's also a necessity for human existence. The Apex Predator has nothing to fight to be the Apex Predator, and we as humans need to fight. The sinful acts make us just as much as the riteous. This film really shows the flaw of humanity that makes us human and while beyond just sad, thus is the tale of existence.

  • @ohkabomb917 ...and destructive too.

  • It's even more bloody depressing than Barefoot Gen. If you are borderline suicidal, do not watch this or you will end up hanging yourself. lol!

  • This is such a good movie I cried so much I can't cry anymore!

  • I would have never throw my siblings children. This is just awful for an aunt to do that. She's an a-hole and her death is on her.

  • this movie is...SAD! I MEAN I <3 IT BUT I CANT WATCH IT FOR YEARS NOW I CANT STOP CRYING... TT__TT I GONNA CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP NOW.

  • This is one of the saddest films I've ever seen. I don't think I could watch it twice. :( beautiful nonetheless

  • Y U SO DEPRESSING?ლ(ಠ益ಠლ

  • why are humans so evil , why should we fight , and why are we doing wars and kill each other , damn us , and damn our humanity

  • a live action film just as depressing is Nobody Knows

  • urghh,,,now i'm crying... :( so sad

  • i'm so angry about the bitch aunt... she was away to mean than necessary. She doesn't understand how adult people suppose to behave

  • Cant even see the screen right now, I'm crying so hard! Damn it, America, why couldn't we have minded our own business and prevented this from happening?? Now I can't look at a little Asian kid without bawling up!!

  • @CrazyAlchemist1 Um, Japan declared war on America after destroying Hawaii. Before that, America wasnt involved at all. So in reality this is sort of Japan's fault

  • @DarPower1 Well, first of all this shitty oil bombs were a product of England and second of all America should have only bomed the military or royalty...not civilians! They should have never bombed in the first place. The creator of the atomic bomb *J. Openhimer* was begging for the manhattan project not to be carried out *the atomic bombing of Japan

  • @LinaILY4evr Japanese attacked civilains as well. And Civilians lived right next to the military bases. The atom bomb was droppeed right above the military base. Also bombing their royalty was considered worse to the Japanese than themseleves. Look at the battle of Saipan\.

  • @LinaILY4evr The Japanese were lied to by their own government and was told to commit suicide, resulting in thousands of families on the beaches. Look it up on Youtube, The civilains would gather their familes and blow themselves up to hurt Americans who werent going to hurt them. The civilians were just as involved as the soldiers were!

  • @DarPower1 The problem was the cult around Emperor Hirohito. The people were trained to believe that he was a god, someone to willingly die for. That thinking was not easily overcome. (Cont'd)

  • @DarPower1 It's easy to think that we could have overcome that. But it took something so terrible that we unleashed to stop it. A land war would have dealt a far more deadly toll. I've read.. (cont'd)

  • @DarPower1 I've read a great deal of WWII history and we would have had such a high cost to invade the islands... the death and devastation would have made the A-bombs look as nothing. (cont'd)

  • @DarPower1 To this day, Japan has a very hard time talking about what happened. Nanking in China... the death marches... the comfort women... it's not a pretty picture at all... (cont'd)

  • @DarPower1 Did the US do the right thing in unleashing such horror? I can't say it's right, but I understand why it may have been the lesser of two evils. But I will say I wish kids didn't get hurt.

  • @DarPower1 Oh! Damnit, sorry! I feel like an idiot now, especially since I just now learned this on Thursday. Damnit, I'll be sure to look this stuff up BEFORE I post, GAWD I'm so stupid.... ><

  • @DarPower1 u need to learn history

  • WHY!!!

  • man :c anyone know if this was based on actual events?? so sad :/

  • ='(

  • Dnt even have to click play just reading the comments is makeing me cry

  • 3 minutes in..Im already crying D:

  • poor kid i hope we NEVER have a war ever again

  • It was good.... sad.... but good

  • :(

  • :( :( :( Soo touching story...Thanks to my friend who asked me to watch this movie

  • the end... so sad.

  • This is the saddest film i've ever watch! I watched the japanese version. It's better.

seriously. I'll never watch it again.

  • ...I wish...our leaders wouldn't drive things into violence....look at the damage it does to the innocent that has nothing to do with it...*sighs* This movie is beautiful regardless.

  • I absolutly just fell in love with this movie<3 this was my first time seeing it and honestly...I cried none stop through it all</3 Its the most saddest yet most beautiful anime movie ever made<3 It has such a great message and its just SO touching and inspiring<3 <3WORLD PEACE<3

  • I love this movie SOOOO much!! It's just so sad, I can NEVER watch this anime without crying. *sniffle*

  • snippy snippy snippy crab...

  • It was so sad I wanted to cry, but they mixed in a bit of laughter so no one would get to depressed watching this >.>...... my favorite funny part was Setsuko going snippy snippy snippy crab

  • This film is the leading cause of depression in Japan.

  • it's very beautiful anime..and i feel sad after watching this movie...i think the japanese version it's more better coz the originality character and voices build based on japanese style

  • such a tragedy, I cried watching this at school

  • 4 dislikes ? WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU !!??

  • @Adammeatsix maybe they dislike english dub!

  • Im ready to watch this! I need a lot of tissues !

  • i like it so much... nice animation..

  • thank you youtube...thank you.

  • Everytime watching this movie I cry like a baby I alwaysed hated war and I still do this movie I believe is a great example of the consequences of war even if you're not the one fighting the family is still affected I know it is an animation but I wish they never had to go through that T-T

  • @TheEmopanda67

    war gave us incredible technology...

  • @ohkabomb917 To do what with? make even more harrowing wars?

  • I couldn't help but cry

  • i don't think the aunt was a bad person at all. judgement should be contextualized. remember the film's set in WWII

  • 0:27:00 the fireflies like oh hell no

  • @iguy4567 O-tay!

@SuperPs2master From 1945 onwards, the Americans bombed Japan with incendiaries in order to destroy their military bases with better results. But the results were poor...

Most of the Japanese homes and structures were wood and incendiaries often lead to mass asphyxciation. During one incendiary raid on Tokyo in March 1945, 80,000 people died. More on that day than the whole of England in the Blitz of 1940-1941...

  • Even though the aunt was such a jerk, Seita should have apologized to her. If he did, Setsuko wouldn't die and neither would he. They should have lived with the aunt until they were old enough to find a living for themselves or until the aunt actually forcibly pushes them out. Even if she tries to push them out, they should stand their ground and not budge like a brick wall...just my opinion

  • @Jeina09 having gone through a similar situation I've gotta say its not that easy. If he was alone from the start then yeah that could've happened but since he had his little sister its changes things in ways that are difficult to understand. First off if she had a problem with them she should've only confronted the older brother and NOT involve the sister in any way. As soon as I found out that the aunt told the girl bluntly that the mom died I knew that he made the right choice.

  • @Jeina09 he was doing what he felt right for the both of them. He didn't know any better to be honest

  • @Jeina09

I agree, but there is one thing you should remember: Japanese people have deadly pride. Why do you think in WWII Hiroshima and Nagasaki had to be bombed before they gave up?

  • i hate war i <3 peace

  • I Love Studio Ghibli... I Never Have Cried At A Single Movie, Except For This..... I Never Cry I Was In Shock I Was Crying. The Writing And Animation Are Stunning...

This Movie Had A Real Effect On Me......

This Is Why Grave Of The Fireflies Is My Favorite Studio Ghibli Film

  • @Haillwell Yes It is quite affecting...it would make anybody think twice before going to war. Why do you write every new word with a capital letter? o.O

  • 4 people are selfish and assholes , and also they did'nt survived the world war 2

  • @SuperPs2master They are incendiaries. They may look rather weird, but don't be fooled. They burn more than the average bomb blows...

  • @TheYuuzhan i see no wonder haves more destruction , this movie is kinda sad

  • @iguy4567 Oh, wait! SORRY!! Wrong guy. I meant to post the comment to SuperPs2master.

  • @TheYuuzhan that's fine

  • @iguy4567 They are incendiaries They look like that, but don't be fooled. They burn more than the average bomb blows...

  • Compared to all the other Ghibli films, at least the ones from the 80s, this one has more natural coloring to it and it is natural colors that make a cartoon more realistic...

  • The aunt makes me mad.. treating them like they're being lazy just because Seita took his sister to the shelter instead of staying at home where their lives are in danger.

  • Just went to watch on megavideo, fucking government decided it was a better idea to censor the people even more instead of worrying about the real problems this country faces, like it's own DANM GOVERNMENT!!! Everyone reading this, go watch as much free stuff as you possibly can before its to late and we lose even more of our freedom. Ron Paul 2012.
