I think it was bad form of Banks and Rutherford to completely edit Ray from Genesis' history. It would have been awesome if he opened the 2007 tour. With hindsight they treated him quite badly.
Ray was far better suited to the Gabriel era material, but really struggled on the more poppy orientated prog of the late Collins period.I agree CAS was a fine album though I'm not sure it deserves the label of a true Genesis album.Only Uncertain weather,The dividing line and One mans fool really recall the band I've adored my entire life.
I saw the band on this tour in Glasgow. The abiding memory was of punters walking out after a few songs, not willing to give Ray a fair crack of the whip. I thought he was a brilliant choice and that the band sounded excellent. The new material showed great promise, but it wasn't to be. The 2007 "Turn it on again (cause we don't have enough in our pension pots) tour was no where near in terms of musical output.
They definitely should have tried to continue with Ray. Unfortunately from a historical standpoint it would have been seen as their "declining years"(ie failure) because they wouldn't have matched Phil's success. I think that's really the only reason they decided not to continue, and it's a shame the music industry is that way, especially considering the drek that's out there now. CAS was brilliant.
I'd take the outstanding Nir Z in my band anyday, anytime.

Ray's voice's ok, but the other new guys are nothing but a bunch of hired hands to Tony and Mike .. very sad

@RogueTrader101 - It might have been weird having him open for them, but I do think he really deserved to get a verse on Carpet Crawlers 1999.

I think Ray was a great singer. I wish they would have continued with him.

@racer500gp I agree. I still like the Wilson/Rutherford/Banks/Zidkyahu/Drennan lineup of that short Genesis era ( I saw them live in 1998 ! ).
