That's exactly why it is a cork. If the legs go over the head (more importantly, if the hips go over the head), then it is a gainer full twist. Corks are not inverted...or at least they aren't supposed to be by definition.
Hi, are corks easier to learn if you already got down b-twists? I already got b-twists down clean, and im trying to learn something new. Whenever I go to the j-step, i cant keep my body horizontal. What am I doing wrong?
Btwists may get you used to twisting, but it isn't necessary. As for getting horizontal, make sure you're looking over your shoulder. I recommend you watch my "j-step tutorial" video. It's slow motion, which should give you some good ideas.
Of course. Anything is possible, but if you learn it without learning your basics, it just may not look as pretty, or it may simply be more difficult to learn as you'll have more fear barriers you need to break than if you had broken them while learning the basics.
Nice catch of the twist timing. I was twisting too early, but this fixed my problem. Thanks.
I'd highly recommend learning a slant gainer and butterfly twist before trying to attempt, or perfect, this flip -- for anyone still trying to get this one down.
You're only supposed to get 1 full spin with a normal cork. If you get 2, it's a double cork. Many people get confused by thinking a cork is supposed to have 1.5 spins. That is because those people try to wrap and spin when they are still looking at the sky. A cork is a wrapped slant gainer. A slant gainer has you looking at the ground. When you wrap during a proper slant gainer, you will only do 1 full 360 degree spin. If you wrap while looking at the sky, it's closer to a gainer full.

@ryukenosuke thank you so muuch for this comment!!!! THANK YOU!!! Now I finally understand. I always thought it was 1.5 ... really and I spinned while facing the sky and I had no idea where I was in the air. I am looking forward to trying the cork again tomorrow jstep kick the moon style. I didnt even know cork was connect to slant gainer. I always went high jstep and tried to keep my body parallel to the ground and then twist btwist like ... your comment was like the enlightment for me really!
Breaking your fear barrier is the most difficult thing you'll ever do when it comes to tricking. It's best to start with the basics (class A tricks) and work up from there. If you are learning in the correct order of tricks, then by the time you got to cork, you'd have no problem flipping. Also, I never suggest training on tramps. They give a false sense of security, make you feel stronger than you really are, and when you get off to walk, you suddenly feel weak. Trampolines, as well. ( ;
There isn't a "correct" order, but learning class A, then B, then C and so on is recommended. The reason for this is that most advanced tricks are modified versions of the basics. For example, a butterfly kick is a class A, then the butterfly twist is a class B or C (I forget which). The back-tuck is a class A, slant gainer a class B, cork a class C. You can easily set a path in front of you to learn the tricks that lead up to one another to make it easier.
I do all of that, except for the trampoline. I hate tramps as they give you a false sense of strength. As soon as you get off, you feel weak. I'd much rather train on plyo or a spring floor so as to truly work from the ground up on a surface I'll be using the most while tricking.
You eventually develop air awareness, where you can basically feel where your body is in the air from repeated training. Other than that, the sky is blue, and the ground is green. When you see the ground over your shoulder, you should know when to put down your leg.
Hmmm, my typical advice is far too complicated to type. I usually have to show people. So, in your case, I'd recommend learning to spin while still upright. For example, just hop up and torque your arms to one side to spin. When you get comfortable doing that, then you can try and incorporate it into a slant gainer. That will turn it into a cork screw.
im spanish boy and i m goin to say you whats your problem
"cuando hagas el cork, tienes que tirar los brazos hacia arriba. Eso lo haces bien, pero donde fallas es en la segunda parte donde tienes que dejar el cuerpo horizontal. Yo tuve un problema parecido hasta que descubri una forma de hacerlo mucho mas facil. Cuando estes arriba, tienes que tratar de meter como un frontflip pero que te deja llevar el giro, con lo que consigues agruparte y sobretodo mucha estetica.Suerte
just a little advice, my corks used to look like this, and it wasn't possible to swingthrough from, maybe with your run up, use that last leap a little more and pause a bit before you twist :) you will get higher and land it effortless :)
can someone help me cuz wen ever i go for the cork i kick my leg up and then i get lost in the air and i end up falling on my side if someone can make a video response putting y this happens i will appreciate it thanks
Most likely, you're starting your rotation before your chest is looking at the ground, which would mean you aren't looking over your shoulder. All you need, if you do this correctly, is a 360 degree spin, so if you're in grass, start the spin when you see the ground, and open up when you see green again. If you are at a gym, the floor is either blue or red, so start the spin when you see the floor, and open up when you see that color, again. Best is to get video for us to see.
can you look at my cork and give me some tips its on the trampoline but after i get it on the trampoline then i will try it on the spring floor or something
i like it it still looks good shit i wish i can do that hey i know how to btwist is it kinda the same thng but i just have to do a cheat gainer then spin cause i cant spin on a cheat gainer its hard az hell
Can you do a gainer flash? If you can, then just bring in one of your elbows after lifting and look over the shoulder at the ground of the elbow you brought in. This will cause your body to slant as you gainer. To stay balanced, just keep looking at the ground. When you get used to doing that, then you can wrap it to turn it into a cork.
@ryukenosuke ight well i got the cork now kinda its a littlew sloppy but i got the idea and i did a flash gainer once but i cant do it no more i cant get air u got any tips for me to get higher
Where most people lose air is in their J-step. Most people think it's a pivot step, and that causes them to hop and turn 180 degrees and swing their leg straight down and up. The J-step is more of a whiplash type of start-up. You need to arc your swinging leg, as if kicking someone's leg out from under them. This allows you not to have to fight gravity with your leg, and you get to use the inertia your leg has built up in the most efficient manor. Check out my J-step tutorial vid
I think you mean "slant gainer." Anyways, that was a slant gainer, it was wrapped, and that's a cork. Not the best cork, but a cork none the less. He is horizontal while rotating. If he were vertical, yea, you would be correct. If he were inverted, it would be a gainer full.
nice man ! i hate it when pppl don't put slow mo in there vids , helps alot for me to watch it in slow mo , gonna try this one man , to bad the weather sucks down here and i have no local gyms ...
The main tip is to land with your chest up. If your chest is too low, and you try to s/t, your foot will hit the ground. If you can land with your chest high, as if you are standing straight up (or near it), you should be able to s/t without many problems.
@ryukenosuke hey when i do this why do i land on my knees i just do it standing because when i do the run and kick i go the oposite direction haha but when i do just standing i land on my knees do i just need more practiece?
You aren't generating enough momentum if you do it standing. There are some people who can, but they have very strong kicks and they don't weigh very much. The J-step is designed to use your own body weight and momentum to your advantage. If you kick to the wrong side, then I would suggest learning to cork on that side, or learn to kick on the right side. The corkscrew can be down to either the right or the left. It is up to you to decide which is more comfortable.
A slant gainer is more important than a normal gainer. A cork screw is a slant gainer where you wrap your arms and legs to spin when you see the ground over your shoulder. If you wrapped a normal gainer, it would be known as a gainer full twist.
Dude like omg when i was tricking at the epic gym we spent the night there it was so fucking cold and we tricked for 24 hours and it was snowy and so cold outside lets switch cities XD
I would kill for some REAL snow. I used to live in Illinois. Oh wow, how I miss real packing snow. 6 inches of pure bliss. Snow balls, snow forts, snow fights, piles of snow pushed up by plow trucks. T_T
I am 23. Tatsumaru is 19~20. We both have martial arts backgrounds, and he used to be a coach at ASI Gymnastics. We started tricking at our local parks in the grass. Most gymnastic gyms wouldn't let us in due to our ages.
We got lucky and found a gym that loves us and wants us to keep coming back, but for a good long while (year or two) it was mostly grass tricking. A loss of motivation sucks, indeed. However, if you find a friend or two to learn with, you motivate each other.
Rofl, hey a question how old ru now? Im just starting off and im 18. Not sure where i should go. A gym would help being that im attempting tricks on hard dirt with some grass and that kills my motivation. soreness makes me stop at some point. Have you done any gymnastics or any martial arts prior to tricking? I just recently tried to join a taekwondo place but they tried to rip me off so i had to call it a day.
Ah, so you start your wrap while still looking at the sky, eh? Yea, this is why we always recommend working slant gainers before the cork. Slant gainers and KTM's (kick the moon) are good prerequisites to help you get used to the J-step aimed over your shoulder to get your torso horizontal and your chest facing the ground. Best of luck with your training.
yeah i have those down but my main problem is i dont have anyone to really train with, that and i dont know full execution of moves, thanks alot for this it helps tremendously
Feel free to videotape your attempts and post them. Then message me to take a look. Then I can give you advice on how to fix any issues that I see present.
You'd need to first learn a back tuck, then a gainer, then a gainer flash (preferably from a j-step), and then a j-step slant gainer, and then finally the cork. The slant gainer, which gets you horizontal, is a j-step gainer flash where you look to the shoulder opposite of your kicking leg, lower the arm of the side you're looking at so the elbow touches the side of your body, and while spotting the ground, allow your body to rotate horizontally with the inertia, and land.
Many people start on trampolines to learn their back tuck as they feel safer. I recommend only using a trampoline to learn technique, but get on the actual floor as soon as you can so you don't become reliant on the trampoline. Just remember to use your arms, let yourself rise before tucking, and bring your legs to your chest, not your chest to your legs.
Well, the cork screw is a class B or C trick. I can't recall which, but class A tricks are the beginning pre-requisites to learn before advancing. Pop-360 kick, tornado kick, 540 kick, kip-up, back handspring, front tuck, back tuck, and butterfly kick. I may have forgotten one...but that's basically it. I suggest you start with learning those. All advanced tricks use the basics from these and simply take them further through technique. ( :
I don't know how long it took Tatsumaru. I, on the other hand, have a small problem. I keep over rotating mine and hypering. I'm not used to the hyper, so I keep bailing upon landing...so I'd say I haven't quite got this trick down pat, yet. c( :
thanks man i've just started learning these and the part you said about twisting too early is most definately the reason i end up on my back after a 360 spin! looks like my setup needs work
Slant gainers really do this trick wonders. If you aren't familiar with slant gainers, but can kick the moon, then do a KTM without the heel kick (that's a slant gainer). ^-^ So, slant gainer and wrap when you seen the floor. Best of luck to you, my friend.
your cork...your feet are lower than you head all the time. Shouldn't it be different? my cork (which i recently learned and is bad) is horizontal but i land it badly (which you don't) what do i have to do? my friend 王栋臣 taught himself corks but they are even more vertical than yours... should it really be vertical? does it feel like a backflip360? or really a b-twist?
this is a great tutorial but i still cant do it but i understand everything your saying i just be doing something wrong thanks for the video nice tutorial :)
If you have a camera, feel free to record a few of your attempts and submit it to youtube. This way, we can help let you know where you may need to modify your setup and such.
good that you put in a slow mo style. only really need to listen to the "how to" once or twice and need to see how its done 1 billion times to perfect it. thanks for the tutorial
Hehehe, I hear ya. Tatsumaru and I actually made another cork tutorial, and am in the process of editing it for youtube. Look to it in the near future. ( :
ok i no how to do a corkscrew all ready but i still can not do 2 spins i can only do 1 360 degree spin n land it can you please get back to me on some tips because i really want to get this move down thanks
Yea. Just make sure you start the rotation when you're lookin' at the ground, so you'll end the rotation also looking at the ground. This is why you should learn slant gainers, first, b/c they will train you to look at the ground from a j-step gainer flash. But, the cork really only has 360 degrees of rotation.
that kinda was not a cork legs didnt go over his head

I would kill for some REAL snow. I used to live in Illinois. Oh wow, how I miss real packing snow. 6 inches of pure bliss. Snow balls, snow forts, snow fights, piles of snow pushed up by plow trucks. T_T

feels like texas... lol

However, if you find a friend or two to learn with, you motivate each other.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
Rofl, hey a question how old ru now? Im just starting off and im 18. Not sure where i should go. A gym would help being that im attempting tricks on hard dirt with some grass and that kills my motivation. soreness makes me stop at some point. Have you done any gymnastics or any martial arts prior to tricking? I just recently tried to join a taekwondo place but they tried to rip me off so i had to call it a day.

It's been raining here for the past few weeks. I am ready for a dry day to finally get some more tricking done.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
"it's a hot day..." haha priceless.. nice tutorial man...
greetings from the netherlands, where it doesn't feel like texas.

Hahaha, I envy your weather. I used to live up north, so the heat of Texas is brutal, in my opinion.

I live in southern texas, you have no complaint :)

ahh ha i have ben trying to get and extra half spin in the air thats why i cant land it
misticspear 2 years ago
Ah, so you start your wrap while still looking at the sky, eh? Yea, this is why we always recommend working slant gainers before the cork. Slant gainers and KTM's (kick the moon) are good prerequisites to help you get used to the J-step aimed over your shoulder to get your torso horizontal and your chest facing the ground. Best of luck with your training.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
yeah i have those down but my main problem is i dont have anyone to really train with, that and i dont know full execution of moves, thanks alot for this it helps tremendously
misticspear 2 years ago
Feel free to videotape your attempts and post them. Then message me to take a look. Then I can give you advice on how to fix any issues that I see present.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
for sure thanks man

how do i bgrin my to up so its horizontal
BboyOshikuru 2 years ago
You'd need to first learn a back tuck, then a gainer, then a gainer flash (preferably from a j-step), and then a j-step slant gainer, and then finally the cork. The slant gainer, which gets you horizontal, is a j-step gainer flash where you look to the shoulder opposite of your kicking leg, lower the arm of the side you're looking at so the elbow touches the side of your body, and while spotting the ground, allow your body to rotate horizontally with the inertia, and land.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
But again, I stress that you learn your basics, first, and then progress up the skill-tree until you reach the cork, properly.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
o thanks... do you have any tips on how to conqure the fear cuz i dont have any spotters lol
BboyOshikuru 2 years ago
Many people start on trampolines to learn their back tuck as they feel safer. I recommend only using a trampoline to learn technique, but get on the actual floor as soon as you can so you don't become reliant on the trampoline. Just remember to use your arms, let yourself rise before tucking, and bring your legs to your chest, not your chest to your legs.
ryukenosuke 2 years ago
what if you cant do any flips cuz i cant and i wanna learn this lol
BboyOshikuru 2 years ago
Well, the cork screw is a class B or C trick. I can't recall which, but class A tricks are the beginning pre-requisites to learn before advancing. Pop-360 kick, tornado kick, 540 kick, kip-up, back handspring, front tuck, back tuck, and butterfly kick. I may have forgotten one...but that's basically it. I suggest you start with learning those. All advanced tricks use the basics from these and simply take them further through technique. ( :

Ill try this right now lol

how long did it take you to learn your corks?
Because i'v been doin it for about 3 days now and i got it! is that normal or should it take less amount of time?
XOFlipNinjaOX 3 years ago
I don't know how long it took Tatsumaru. I, on the other hand, have a small problem. I keep over rotating mine and hypering. I'm not used to the hyper, so I keep bailing upon landing...so I'd say I haven't quite got this trick down pat, yet. c( :
ryukenosuke 3 years ago
thanks man i've just started learning these and the part you said about twisting too early is most definately the reason i end up on my back after a 360 spin! looks like my setup needs work
mayan212 3 years ago
Slant gainers really do this trick wonders. If you aren't familiar with slant gainers, but can kick the moon, then do a KTM without the heel kick (that's a slant gainer). ^-^ So, slant gainer and wrap when you seen the floor. Best of luck to you, my friend.
ryukenosuke 3 years ago
your cork...your feet are lower than you head all the time.
Axidus 3 years ago
If your friend's is vertical, that's called a full twist instead of a corkscrew. A cork needs to be horizontal.

do u have any other tutorials about doin like other things like back flip and you no stuff on ground not on trampoline
wuzzuw 3 years ago
Not at the moment, as we figured Jujimufu's stuff would suffice...but if absolutely necessary, we can probably make some more tuts.

ok i no how to do a corkscrew all ready but i still can not do 2 spins i can only do 1 360 degree spin n land it can you please get back to me on some tips because i really want to get this move down thanks
EVILLABZ 3 years ago
You want a double cork? I'm not sure if Tatsu can double cork, yet.
ryukenosuke 3 years ago
oh so then 1 spin is already a cork ??? because
then that would mean i already have a cork right ????
EVILLABZ 3 years ago
Yea. Just make sure you start the rotation when you're lookin' at the ground, so you'll end the rotation also looking at the ground. This is why you should learn slant gainers, first, b/c they will train you to look at the ground from a j-step gainer flash. But, the cork really only has 360 degrees of rotation.
