The question regarding who is the greatest guitarist is always going to be a personal opinion but as a jazz guitar fanatic who has listened to all of the major names and hundreds of lesser known guitarists nobody compares to Wes.
@atomic116090 I love Django. He and Wes aren't competing. They are both geniuses of the guitar. Django listened to Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti-Eddie another genius. Calm down with the "he beat it "stuff. Django didn't invent jazz guitar. He just played it great.
Wes was a phenomanal player. His greatest influence was Charlie Christian. Wes has been my favourite for years - a god among musicians. I've always enjoyed listening to Christian but it's only recently that I've become a big fan of his. Sure, his stuff with Goodman was great but it's when he was away from Goodman that he really shines - stuff like Swing To Bop and Stompin' at The Savoy(LIve at Minton's) or the stuff from 1939 with Jerry Jerome(Stardust, I Got Rhythm, Tea for Two). Amazing stuff.
THe fact that he's just chuffed to bits about playing this injects just that bit of extra passion- makes you love jazz. These guys were able to make (something of) a living doing what they love. Marvellous.
I have never seen a video of Wes playing this stuff. I knew he used his thumb but , whoah there Nelly , he uses no other digits. Jeff Beck uses all of his fingers and his thumb.
@alzhammer1 The most noble deciding factor in any candidate for the "greatest" in any genre is usually never who played the most chords or scales, the fastest or the most complex arrangements but in the enduring impact their style had on that genre or instrument. Where do Metheny and Van Kampen compare to Montgomery when it comes to influence? They don't even come close. Wes Montgomery IS jazz guitar. Everyone else either came before or after WES. That's how it's been decided ever since Wes.
this guy ( Wes Montgomery ) sands the back of his guitar neck just to show that he played a lot. Don't get fooled, it's an old trick.... Victor Van Kampen doesn;t need to do that..!
Quel swing ! Merci.
@thehturt I hear you but have you heard Twisted Blues (the version with Harper's solo on gut strings where the drummer is closer to the bass) Give it a listen and tell me if you think he's an aggressive enough bass player.
@aljopa Wes is great but, other jazzmen as angelo debarre or bireli lagrene aren't smiling at all when playing, and they're both great guitarists !! :)
But it's very pleasant to see how He takes his pleasure by playing the guitar !!!
his rhythmic phrasing over 3/4 is rather remarkable. He does the most tasty lick ever around 1:40!. The piano solo really should've been before Wes' solo it just undoes all the brilliant work Wes managed to do with his solo. What are chops if it sounds awful?
wait, i thought most of the song was in 3/4, what's the time signature for the main theme in the beginning? (if you can answer that it'll help me out alot XP)
That's so true. I remember years ago, trying to learn the solo off the studio version of this tune - the first half of the first chorus just felt like 4/4 because of the way he played it - I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the one was until later in the 1st chorus! I picked one hell of a "first jazz tune" to learn - I bagged it (temporarily) and went on to easier fare....
