I've made that shot many times.. Some tables that shot just lays real good.. I've also shot that shot hard, making it jar up (hit both points, twice) and float back in my hole (which is a fun shot)..
I heard a story where Reyes was hooked in his own pocket and his opponent only needed 1 ball to go out in One Pocket and that 1 ball was hanging in the opponent's pocket. Efren took an intentional foul and shot the ball on the spot and since he owed balls, the balls were spotted behind it. The opponent missed and Efren got out from there.
It really takes an educated pool player to appreciate this shot. I showed this to a few of my friends who just play 8 and 9 ball and they didn't think it was impressive at all. Me on the other hand,, my mouth dropped the first time I saw this.
i can only see him taking this shot as aggressiv save beacause, as u can see, he has no position to the next ball and he could have get to that white ball position with an much easier rail first shot and hed definitly made it i think.
efren is the best player in pool history....the only flaw he has is his break otherwise he can win 9 ball tournaments consecutively no questions ask.i saw him one time doing a certain exhibition after breaking a set of nine ball he pocketed all the balls consecutively by banking it....judge that.
@taffin44 And his jumps are not optimal. Young players seem to jump more and train for it more. Efren allways billiards his way out anyways... hes awesome.

My man Billy palmer is the best One pocket player in Cali!! but Efren is the king of one pocket! billy beat him the first match and it was hill-hill and the 2nd match efren killed him !billy took third, and efren won like always!lol
yeah, i agree. my buddies at the pool room were watching him practice. he was playin rotation. he ended up funny on the 6. he could'nt play it straight in the corner pocket so he called a bank. everyone said,"you can't bank it, there is a cluster of balls in the way." Reyes banked the 6 drawing the Q into the cluster, clearing a path for the 6 in the opposite corner. unfortunately, he hung the 6 but, whatta shot.
I would bet all my money on efren if they where playing for money all day!but..if Tony chohan and billy where ever to play for cash
I would bet on Tony!there both my best friends.but I really think Chohan is the best one pocket player in the US.I know that sounds crazy but you got to see Chohan play!I also think he better than clif!what u think>?
Cliff Joyner? hummmm. It does'nt suprise me that Chohan is a great one pocket . I dunno, sounds like a close one. Alot of these money 9 ballers are changing the way one hole is played; more aggressive. Myself, I still have to ask for 8-5 + break. lol... Yeah, hard to bet against Chohan in any game(he's a fighter). I'd at least put him over Gabe Owens, Danny Harriman,"Piggy" Banks, Larry Nevel(maybe).btw, do you know anything about this Sylver Ochoa? Is he that good?
He is a solid player!he grew up playing with JJ and James davis sr. and Jr. ,cornbread red,CJ wiley and other great TX player...his shot making is really good but his shap is?plays good for the cash tho!solid mental game!
I seen alot of players when I was on the road with chohan!watch out for this kid name joey gray!he play real good one pocket and banks..
not better than chohan but good!who is that top player in your state?
well I'm in NYC and, as you know, it's kinda fallen off the map as far as top money players go. One pocket is not as big a game here as the South or Chicago. Ginky(great), T. Robles(runnin local Predator tour). We get our share of road players here, Ignacio Chavez(the Mexican) was here last year as well as D. Orcullo(that guy is scary). T. Hohmann and Mika are in town from time to time. Mark 'Spain' Vidal is good. There is a Black player named Dave that was great one hole player 10-15 yrs, ago.
Object: Pocket 8 balls in your pocket. Rules: Look it up online they are too long to post. The general idea is just that, to pocket 8 balls into your own pocket. It's the "chess match" of pool. The person who wins the break, will break from the opposite corner of his pocket ( break from left corner pocket, takes right corner and vise versa). For the most part you are either playing safe or pocketing a ball in your pocket, like most billiard sports.
The chess of pool. I like that. Only I'd give that title to straight pool. Not easy running off 14 balls then leaving a good break ball to keep the run going. One pocket is fun, but if you can ever get a break out, game over.
14.1, you are only leaving that ONE ball into position. Other than that you are for he most part free to pocket balls. If you get a bad leave on one, chances are you have another shot. With one pocket, you may only have ONE ball to pocket. On top of it you need to make the decision if it's wise to pocket that ball vs play safe. Maybe even pocket an apponents ball in the interest of saving and easy run. The strategy is endless with one pocket.
you got the general idea. its called 1 pocket. and if your breaking from the right corner it doesn't mean that you get the opposite side pocket. corey duel breaks from one side and calls the same side pocket. because he uses a hard break with good positioning. pocket a ball. if u scratch, take one of your balls out. if you pocket the opponents ball in his pocket and u scratch on purpose...HIS ball comes out, and so does yours and he breaks from behind the line. you can't jump.illegal shot
For you dolts saying he didn't play it off the point, and the people saying it only comes up once in a million, listen to the damn commentary. DiLiberto says that's the second time he did that in 2 games.
what in the hell do u think he was trying to do....of course he was playin it that way and anyone that says he wasnt obviously doesnt kno how to play one pocket or has never seen efren play one pocket hes on another level than anyone else that plays one hole....
efren is rily one of a kind. Som ppl think that som of his great shots are jst flukes or whatso ever..it is bcoz they just cant reach the level of thinking that he has for the game. c'mon guys, listen to show commentators when he plays.. they are really havin a hard time to predict his next move or position. even steve davis once said in the 2006 WPC "ok i give up! i dont know what he's doing!"
Efren is the best in this sport and the best that ever will be.. a true inborn grace!
then again, he's not gonna be the last person to have an interest in pool. there's bound to be another person with that skill... maybe even surpassing his. we have yet to see that tho

you people commenting are idiots. This is a one pocket game not 8ball. Reyes only has one pocket he can shoot into and its opposite where the ball is lined up, he played it off the point. And FYI reyes would rob your ass.
Didn't you hear DiLiberto say it was the second time he's done it in the match? COGsoldier is right. Especially with the accufast cushions on 4 and a half inch Diamond table pockets, you can play the points like that if you execute properly. I don't see how you don't know that shot...Check out Robert Byrnes' "Complete Book of Pool Shots", he has a whole section on playing the points.
diliberto is a very good one pocket player too and yes, I heard him say this. But this is not something you`re going to see that often in one pocket. You might see it happen once in your lifetime. Its WAY TOO RISKY to play a ball off your opponents pocket in the game of ONE POCKET. the risk is much higher than the reward.
Besides... writing a book on playing the points in pool would be a waste of time. It almost NEVER comes up in pool. In fact, I challenge all of you in here to try Efren`s shot. Get on a table and try this shot yourself. Its a VERY VERY low percentage shot.
The success rate at this shot is EXTREMELY low even for a professional. Thats why I question whether or not he actually played that off the point.
You are right, but Efren breaks all the rules and it works for him because his is a pool god. I've watched him "luck" in balls so long now, it's time for everyone to admit: Efren is one of a kind! OK, now you say it. :)
@zzzfore It's simple: anyone who gets "lucky" on such a regular basis must be doing something right. Which is why I don't believe it's luck in Efren's case. His knowledge and ability is so superior, he makes room for luck where others make room for disaster. One might call this positive thinking, but it's really got to do with choosing the right shot and playing it at the perfect speed all the time - in other words, what he does is statistical evidence for a superior mind at work.
Last time trying to reason with you. You are an idiot and extremely hard-headed. Efren Reyes is the best pool player in the world. He is the greatest one-pocket player in the history of the game. NOW PAY CLOSE ATTENTION.

wow... I can tell your life must be really good to come in here and cuss someone out on a message board. The fact is, you might see someone play a ball off the point of a pocket when they`re kicking out of snooker but your probably NEVER going to see someone play a ball off the point of their opponent's pockt in a game of 1 pocket in your entire lifetime.
hey charlienasri, u bastard! i pity u coz u dont know anythin abt pool legends or wat. go on and brush on pool history first b4 u give ur stupid coments here in youtube! efren is the greatest ever, period!

I seriously don`t think he played that off the point. He played it off the rail just above the point and used reverse english so the object ball would carry towards his pocket after it hits the rail. And yes, it was a brilliant shot but no, he did not play that off the point.
Sorry NationalMan, you're wrong- that spin off the rail would be possible but there's no way he could transfer that much spin from the cue ball to the object ball. As further proof, he didn't even put any side on the cue ball- his cue was straight down the middle of the ball.
Have you ever played one pocket? A one pocket player would never try to play a ball off the point of his opponent`s pocket its just 2 risky. I`ve played the game for years and I can tell you for a FACT Efren wasnt tryin to play the ball off the point. There is a certain way you can hit the shot to make it bounce back towards your pocket but its highly doubtful he was even trying this shot.
besides... if he was REALLY tyying to play it off the point he would never hit the bottom rail first. Watch it again... the object ball hits the bottom rail first.
he played that off the point,,, the object ball hit the short rail then the long rail point. any spin transfer off the cueball would have been lost after hitting the short rail,,, to get the object ball near his pocket he would have to play it off the horn. the reason it hit the bottom rail first is because the shot is very hard to make.
Idiot he hit the bottom rail first to give him angle to get the cueball out of the object ball's path. He played it into a point, it's a difficult, but effective shot to pull off. One pocket makes snooker look like checkers. One pocket is chess.
Moron, again, it's a one pocket shot that good one pocket players know of. Where the fuck do you live, I'll play you some one pocket for whatever the fuck you want!!!
What you're really saying is you wouldn't try the shot because you're not capable. Efren, on the other hand is highly capable. You shouldn't presume to judge his ability or intentions based on your capabilities.
no, thats not what why I said it. I said it because this is a very low percentage shot and pros almost never attempt low percentage shots. Even if he was trying to play that off the point its not something you're going to see that often. Efren has probably practiced this shot 1000 times and thats why he played it in this particular game but its not likely he'll ever try this shot again.
@NationalMan The problem is low-percentage for whom - maybe he doesn't figure to make it into his pocket every time he shoots it, but as long as he gets it away from his opponent's pocket and the cue ball to where i his opponent's path to his pocket is blocked, it's a useful shot. And given the feel of the man, I wouldn't be surprised he can do that almost 100% of the time. It's also an aggressive safety (offense versus mere containment), what one is supposed to look for in One Pocket.
@LeonFleisherFan its a low percentage shot for anyone. Sure, it worked in this situation. But its not something Efren would do often. I've watched this guy play pool for years. This is not a typical shot.
mayweather says efren is not known .. all of a sudden he became a world champion, there must be something wrong, it cant be right.

I seriously don`t think he played that off the point. He played it off the rail just above the point and used reverse english so the object ball would carry towards his pocket after it hits the rail. And yes, it was a brilliant shot but no, he did not play that off the point.
NationalMan 4 years ago

NationalMan 4 years ago
Most likely he was tryin to send the object ball 2 rails and into the stack & got kinda lucky & the ball went towards his pocket.
NationalMan 4 years ago
besides... if he was REALLY tyying to play it off the point he would never hit the bottom rail first. Watch it again... the object ball hits the bottom rail first.
NationalMan 4 years ago
he played that off the point,,, the object ball hit the short rail then the long rail point. any spin transfer off the cueball would have been lost after hitting the short rail,,, to get the object ball near his pocket he would have to play it off the horn. the reason it hit the bottom rail first is because the shot is very hard to make.

Just come on down to texas, we can play some one-hole. Bend over and i`ll ram it in your hole for you.

he's done this shot several times in the very same tournament and irl. that's how we know it was intentional.
dongchinchin 2 years ago
He probably was trying to do it but its a very high risk shot . I don't recommend it.
NationalMan 2 years ago
What you're really saying is you wouldn't try the shot because you're not capable. Efren, on the other hand is highly capable. You shouldn't presume to judge his ability or intentions based on your capabilities.
pcturtakr 2 years ago
no, thats not what why I said it. I said it because this is a very low percentage shot and pros almost never attempt low percentage shots. Even if he was trying to play that off the point its not something you're going to see that often. Efren has probably practiced this shot 1000 times and thats why he played it in this particular game but its not likely he'll ever try this shot again.
NationalMan 2 years ago
@NationalMan The problem is low-percentage for whom - maybe he doesn't figure to make it into his pocket every time he shoots it, but as long as he gets it away from his opponent's pocket and the cue ball to where i his opponent's path to his pocket is blocked, it's a useful shot. And given the feel of the man, I wouldn't be surprised he can do that almost 100% of the time. It's also an aggressive safety (offense versus mere containment), what one is supposed to look for in One Pocket.
LeonFleisherFan 1 year ago
@LeonFleisherFan its a low percentage shot for anyone. Sure, it worked in this situation. But its not something Efren would do often. I've watched this guy play pool for years. This is not a typical shot.
