we knew about this river bore wave 10 years ago. not freshly discovered im afraid, tommo wright of the world bore research society had footage of it and had been in contact with some guys over there way back. still awesome you guys have surfed it...bore surfing... its the way forward! i have seen a barrel break left handed on a river for over 4 minutes!!!! not telling you where though! seek and you will find, well done rip curl looks liek you guys had fun! :)

@neilandfi hoep you get back in the next tides. nothing today. i got worked at boatyards, got rolled over the reef as it went through the cauldren, its the big wipeout with my yellow board getting tombstoned and flipping in the air as i got dragged along the bottom on the longwave movie. sand everywhere hahahaha. tommo got held under for over a minute with board jammed up in the fork of a tree at wipeout lounge. scary times! its on the extras section somewhere on longwave.

My beating was on a day when I was the only one at SBI, so I went for it and got locked in by a wedge, banked big style plus a few feet into the air for good measure. 3 rounds of surgery and one broken arm later...Don't try this at home, folks.

The location has already been out in the surf mags for the last 6 months, and as Matt said it has been known to tidal bore afficionados including bore surfers for some years, but not surfed ( to my knowledge anyway) until Anthony Colas did it last year. There are probably several miles of it, so calling it a "spot" is sort of true, but misleading. There are probably several other tidal bores that may be as good as this that are yet to be surfed...probably.

@mattsbigmush Matt, I'm stuck in work today. Only one surf in the last year due to surgery to treat a wipeout injury suffered on the Severn. All fixed now and good to go on the next set at the local river wave. I've paid my dues, now I feel like I'm owed a decent ride.....2-3 miles would make me a happy man. I hope others bear in mind what I've said though. When a tidal bore hits you, expect to be properly worked because they can punch way above their weight.

It has certainly been know for some time, more or less. I guess i was trying to imply the film by rip curl was the icing on the cake as far as presenting this locale to the surfing world, and fully exposing the "secret" of this "spot." Your right there are probably several other bores if not dozens and dozens out there which have yet to be surfed. Considering where this bore is located and how awesome it is, it will be interesting to see how the region changes.

It is now anyway, but really with more and more info available on the net we're already pretty close to the situation where you can do "The Search" without leavbing home, sat at the computer. It's not going to change back and it's already got to the point where nobody needs to give away the secret because quite a bit is already there to be found pretty easily. Maybe the best we can do is manage the change and maybe locals can earn a little money from it.

There is another well known medium-large tidal bore in Indonesia which is the Sri Aman Benak. The one in this video is called the Bono.
