I was in Serbia & Montenegro's army, doing my military obligation in 2002 as radar operator. Each night when I'd finish my 12-04 shift I'd come back and turn on TV to watch music videos in the hallroom and this was one of my favorite songs. Bands like Idlewild helped me keep my spirit and sanity.
this resonates with anyone that has travelled in The Far North of Scotland - 'Stopped in every passing place to watch the world move faster than we do'. thus evoking a Scotland I knew and loved 40 years ago.
What a lyric. Great band, I actually like Warnings\Promises- its my favourite album of theres on so many levels, I also like the older stuff, they changed come on guys lets just get over it. What is the point of doing 10 albums the same.
I dont understand all these I am proud to be scottish when you hear them, its like me as an English person saying I am proud to be English when I hear the Foals.
Ive been listening to these lads for years ever since I was at Univeristy back in 1998 to 2002.....they are a great band and I seriousely think they are underrated.
@patientpeter They would also have more money and be more moticated to keep going. Comments like yours make sense in ones home, but the reality of the world is for a band to be sustainable they need money. ITs called life.
@PaulBriden they would also have more money be motivated to keep going eventually on to selling out like so many other bands before them, sure. they're splitting anyway.
@patientpeter You are right about selling out, but if they sell out, you know the answer, do not buy the record. You can also debate selling out, my view is ,any band must get to the stage where night after night they play the same old stuff and want to move on. Hence, Warnings and Promises could be classed as selling out as it was so different. In my view, a good album that cost them there main fan base for being so different. Where as, Make another World was back to what we know.
it doesn't matter if they're underrated or not really popular. today with modern technology, everyone can enjoy listening to their songs. i'm from the philippines by the way.
Captain/Hope is important weren immature, dirty and raw albums.... 100 broken windows I think moved on to a more mature sound, and by the stage of Remote part you felt they had the confidence in their talent to make the sound they really wanted.
But the first two albums are lightyears better. Anything they did after Remote part was whimsical bollocks, and their restyling of their old raw songs when playing live was ridiculous.
It was the more naive rocking albums that will stand the test
People were arguing about the meaning of the song/ the band in general. I was a dick, clearly, and wanted to draw attention to the fact my screen-name is from this song. "Well maybe you're young and without youth, or maybe you're old without knowing anything's true."
yeah, it makes me feel proud to be scottish too. but over and above that, it makes me appreciate how lucky i am - all of us are - to be humans. quality song but.
just realised...at the end of the video, is that little light formation supposed to be a representation of 'the big bang'?
if so, what would that mean in relation to the song...? the whole thing is magic man.
Warnings and Promises is by far their best album it keeps getting better with each listen and i have it 2 years now and what i really like about this band is that their real an not drama queens id hate to have to like them just because of how many records they've sold i like them because i like them lol that would be a good song for idlewild oh dear.
It is criminal that these guys aren't as well known as they should be. Without any doubt, one of the best bands to come out of the UK. Makes me proud to be Scottish!
i dunno, i dont think "tame" is the right word - i think the right word is mature. not necissarily a bad thing. I mean i reckon The Remote Part is their best album but Post Electric Blues is probably my second favourite imho
@beamquaker they make me proud to be from anywhere near scotland, incredible band. only discovered them recently and going through the albums, hope is important is a class album!

they became tame, too tame after this album, letting bob the bass player go was a mistake, it took away their last 'rock' edge that they had.
That said i cried when i heard them play this live.
