Most of the cars shown are either 1933 Willys coupes or 1940 / 41 Willys coupes with a few English Ford Anglia's and an Austin not to mention a couple Ford Mustangs. Cool video though, I built a few of those models growing up.
I won a trophy for Best Sounding Hot Rod in a meet with well over 250 nice rods, All them other trophies mean very little. It's gotta sound good as well to be a cool rod.
Gassers are way cool. Ohio George with the 427 SOHC. I like the 33 willy's the best. Chiseled from stone. I own a 64 NOVA S/S with a straight axle under it. And it was fun to cruise around with. Although it rode like truck. and could'nt corner worth a dam. It was just the way it all felt when you took off from a stop light. Double clutch it and it would pull a small wheelie. It was a blast.
I can even remember watching Stone-Woods-Cook run when they were running an Oldsmobile motor!! And "Ohio" George Montgomery when he switched over to the 427 Ford SOHC motor in the later 60's. My favorite car, back in the day, was Lou Baney's "Yeakel Plymouth Special" (out of Downey, California) driven by Tom "Mongoose McKuen. Wonderful memories of anything time & place in my life.
@greymountain ~ What's you run? I'm guessing small block Chevy. Sadly I never really returned to drag racing after my ETS on 6 November 70 (3 month earlyout for extending in Vietnam). There was something VERY special about drag racing back then. Nobody had spare motors or spare anything for that matter. Even the strongest cars seldom had more than 2 or 3 guys in the crew. Being a Chevy guys I was always a Shores & Hess & Kohler Bros. fan ~ hated the Chrysler cars like the MGM Willies P/U.
@larrym367 I just did'nt feel that the Jan and Dean was necessary. The cars speak for themselves. But i understand the music and the era. When i look at a car i want to hear engine. I want to see their engines reving in my mind. Not visions of Jan and Dean doing a pom pom routine. Dorkus!!
I lived at SoCal dragstrips from '64 until I was drafted in '69 and you DO have most of the BEST AA/GS cars of the 60's. The Shores & Hess and Kohler Bros. big block Chevy powered Angelias were the strongest of the later 60's while the Stone-Woods-Cook, Big John Maz cars were the left coast's best in the early 60's. "Ohio" George Montgomery was also good. The Mustang Stone-Woods car you feature was the car Doug "Cookie" Cook nearly lost his life in. Good stuff.
@MrRonnieG I watched most all of these cars run at Lions and mostly Fontana, many times I was on the strip before or after these great cars ran in my own A/Gasser. then I got drafted, I often wonder, what great career lbj stole from me, to invade some other country for oil, rubber and other riches the US could steal.
I was a boy when all thes awesome rides were racing (to me) it had more style back then they did not all look the same , in a word was very BOSS , keen and very very very COOL!!!!! Thanks for posting.
Great tribute! Love the pics. we have a 38 coupe and compete w/a group in Western NY called gasser gang of western NY more. This group of gassers is pretty cool. win or lose you shoot the bull over the run & shake hands we have the biggest gasser event in the US in August Dunn Tire Park Raceway couple hundred cars running and more to just show, will post footage soon. we bring our boxer dogs w/us hence the name gasserdogs.. will post more videos soon as we only loaded one so far
Big John's Austin at 1:40 was a beautiful car. Cragars really set it off. His '41 Willys was another beautiful gasser. I believe it graced the front cover of "Hot Rod Magazine" in the 60's. His cars were so nice, they looked like they could of been entered in any car show at any time.
Really, these guys must have been quite the lion tamer back in the day to drive these in a straight line. Like holding the tail of a raging wild elephant.
Yes..call me stoopid be my guest, but what is that beautiful piece of work at the 1:11? We have '41 Checv p/u that needs that look. Man I grew up and raced alot of "Lucy,s" (meaning loose and unpredicatable) back in the late '60 and early '70's. I hate my IFS on the '41.......way too cushy for 2700 lbs. Any one with a good simple axel with dumps ideas? She has a 475 HP drag boat motor (low hrs) 350 over-bore 0.60 with stock stroke.
OK mate....would like to be down-under to experience your disease, once bitten by the gasser bug nothing else matters, we are kindred spirits and a '33 W. is a true gasser example, never ever give up. I can make a gasser out of a Yugo.......mmmmmmmmmmm....not a bad idea!
Aussies ...racers, I got tools and desire.............desire came first, gotz to get my good laydee to accept the sometimes harsh Air of Aussie climate/with no snaaykes? Got ground feed education with icons Smokey Yanuck/cheater-beater winner, but not afraid to defend, the Aussie way. Don't forget Toulene, the circle track winner, don't forget any Aussie way. Mark, Old and Bold. Only 61, but I love climate and Earl Montaigue. Request appreciated.
First drag race was a Gasser War at Orange County Dragway in Orlando, FL. back in 1968. ST&C were there as was Ed Mazmanian....that was drag racing...CB
'Member ur first set of wrinkle-walls? "Member burnin' the s--it our of yer hand? Yer forearm? The inside of yer upperarm? 'Member seeing yer girlfriend with somebody else in the grandstand? 'Member brakin' the 12's for the first time? That makes it all worth it.
How many times on a Saturday night changing cams, carburetion, timing and valve adjustments with no sleep and racing on cross-tops the whole next day, then maybe getting three hours sleep, go to work, then start all over, livin' in dirty clothes and eatin' puffed wheat in the big bag for four months.
Thanks, what I'd give to own one.
