Basically yes, he died. I guess that would seem gruesome but that's what I like about it. The guy who got stomped on and yelled "I'm ok!. I'm still ok!" was originally supposed to say nothing and just die. But the film makers thought that was too scary and recorded the line. Yet, a guy being sacrificed in a pit of potion was ok? Doesn't make too much sense.

But this was back when animated movies had balls. Most of them are campy and more family oriented now.
