  • I just got my own copy of the stereo LP record of "Fantasia"!!!!!!!!!!! :DDDDD

  • It's unfortunate to see (or hear in this case) that a fan with alot of spare time on his hands can make a more stereophonic and immersion restoration than that from Disney's restoration team... but then again, the Fantasia 1940 / 2000 Blu-Ray was a disappointing release overall so I was already baffled.

    Great work.

  • @ForbiddenDouchebag Thank you! n___n

Again, not done mixing it yet, but glad you approve.

What's more disappointing is Disney had an enormous amount of time to dish out a better mix for this release. As soon as I heard "Toccata and Fugue", it was clear something had to be done.

  • @TonyWDA I know. Delayed a whole year for what exactly? What happened to Fantasia World and the other "Fantasia 2006" shorts? (I never saw "Lorenzo" when "Raising Helen" was released and I've been waning to check that out for so long.)

  • @ForbiddenDouchebag That was just as irritating; lack of new bonus material. I'm glad to have gotten what was previously included on the anthology set, but would it really have been that much trouble to at least offer a "Celebrating Fantasia" featurette?

  • @TonyWDA Online connection only you forgot to add. Ah screw it, I'm happy with my Anthology set (without the window-boxing of course).

  • @TonyWDA Yeah thats what really pissed me off about the blu-ray release. I felt it was just a cash in blu-ray release for the Nic Cage Sorcerer's Apprentice movie. I really hope Disney will do a much better release in the future where they could not only give us a better stereo system, but also a mono version and the Irwin Kostal recordings. As well as all the feature's from the Fantasy Legacy disc and from the blu-ray release and put together in a limited box set.

  • @TonyWDA due to Mickey Mouse appearing in this, The Sorcerer's Apprentice is my most favorite segments from Fantasia. what's YOUR favorite segment?

  • No copyright claims are going to take away your great ideas like you demonstrated in your video. Ideas give us innovation, and no law in the world should ever mess with innovation. I applaud you.

  • Original is the best. :-)

  • Nice restoration

  • Wow... looking back on the samples, the stereophonic effects for "Pastoral" and "Toccata & Fugue" are gonna need a lot of work. ._.

  • going to hear how the film originally sounded. Tony - your heart is in the right place, but the final mix is both better and worse in the sense that it is disorganised, because of the use of mono tracks. I have to applaud you for giving it a go though, because Fantasia deserves the kind of effort you have obviously put in, and it makes me cringe that Disney not only dropped this film from the Diamond Edition line, but they couldn't be arsed doing proper research into the Fantasound mix.

    Tom

  • @miniroll32 For being both better and worse I certainly agree, because you're listening to a mix that *hasn't* been finalized yet. Sometimes it will sound as though every single piece of the orchestra is panning in one direction, then to the next, right before separating to truly create a stereophonic effect. This happens not only because of my use of the monaural tracks (which, I admit, do need work -- again, still working on this) but because this effect did occur more than once in Fantasia.

  • I think people tend to forget (or have never bothered researching) that this mix was an experiment to begin with. It may seem very unreasonable today to periodically pan ALL of the channels in a stereo recording because we've mastered surround sound techniques. Being that this mix was one of the first of its kind back then, they took as many chances as possible to play with the recordings. So when people said the music surrounded the audience that night, they weren't kidding.

  • The vinyl album is perhaps the only true living proof of this. All music pans to one side, then separates, then pans to the other, then separates -- and so on and so forth. And keep in mind, this is the only surviving print of what was left of Fantasound by the mid-50s; supervised by none other than the original technical team behind the marvel, so I think the album's pretty accurate in terms of its stereophonic information.

  • But I do have to thank you very much for your input. Means a lot to get this sort of feedback from someone who has clearly studied the film as well. n___n

  • I did a lot of research on Fantasound and Fantasia in general (it took almost 2 years) for a University dissertation, and Tony's work is interesting. When the Blu-ray came out I was incredibly disappointed with the audio quality, because it has just been DNR'd to death. They had applied so much filtering that the Toccata and Fugue sounds like a smudgy mess being amplified through a tube.

The original Fantasound recordings were done on 9 optical tracks (mixed down to 3 final), so no-one is ever

  • Wow!

  • Very impressive, Tony.

  • Welcome back....let me congratulate you...this is a very hard and important work....it's a wonderful restoraion.....again congratulations

  • I didn't get the Blu-ray version on DVD becase I don't have the television for Blu-Ray and I still have the old video at home.

  • Very nice! I've tried restoration before, on some Bugs Bunny cartoons. But it's nowhere near as good as this!

  • Hey, Tony?

I was just curious: what's your favorite segment from Fantasia? Mine's "The Rite of Spring."

  • This is AWESOME! It's amazing one can find the original RKO tracks today!

Keep on Rockin', Tony! God bless!

  • hey tony, i can't tell which fantasound when they have to restore it, i mean, how can they gonna to restore everything in this film when disney company had to do it?

  • Yep, this project definitely has some new depth and richness to it. I just have the regular release of this movie, as well as Fantasia 2000, on DVD from a couple years ago, and I'm kind f glad the Blu-Ray didn't come into my possession. This is good!!

  • @WishfulThinkingArt Stick to that old set if you want better sound. It's the closest to the 1990 mix, therefore closest to the original panning effects. And thank you!! ^^

  • @TonyWDA No problem!! Please continue with this project, it's great!

  • I never owned The 60th Anniversary Edition DVD of Fantasia that was released in the year 2000. I bought the 2010 Two-Movie Collection of Fantasia & Fantasia 2000 on Blu-Ray when it was released. I also own The 1991 CAV Laserdisc Version of Fantasia.

From what I have read the Dolby Pro Logic Soundmix on The 1991 Laserdisc Versions of Fantasia , are faithful to the original Fantasound Mix from 1940.

  • While an orchestra does have it's instruments in it's corresponding areas, I think you distorted the true orchestra effect by abusing left and right fades in many areas... Just my opinion.

  • @RotitaYamaneko watch?v=MVeGvelQq8o

Take a listen to the 1990 mix. Kind of "abuses" those panning effects just the same, don't you think?

  • @TonyWDA Though it does, it's less in a sense of completely panning the audio than just certain instruments, so not as distracting.

  • @RotitaYamaneko True, but there were moments in the original stereophonic recordings (what's left of them, anyway) where every single piece of the orchestra sat at one side for a few seconds, before completely panning to the next, then truly separating to create a three-dimensional effect (The Nutcracker Suite is the best example of this rule). Considering I don't have the original optical masters (they're believed to have been completely destroyed) this is the best a mere fan can do... for now.

  • I don't consider myself to be an audiophile simply because I don't think I have the ears for it. that being said and while i don't think the BD mix is a deal-breaker, I generally liked your version better. I don't know how you'd put it in musical terms but I think the instruments in your version are better separated, there is indeed more clarity and a certain boost in power to the sound (not volume!!).

best example is if you put 5:06 and then 5:40

  • You've certainly put a lot of effort into this and I praise you, but I'm still glad I own the Blu Ray. I don't wanna wait till another version comes out, I'm impatient. I hope you can understand.

  • Thank you very much for showing what you got so far. As this is my favorite film of all time I have always wondered how this film did sound in its original form and I think you did an awesome job at recreating what the very few lucky people ever got to hear when it premiered at the Broadway theater on that faithful night.

  • I believe that the Blu-Ray release should restore and remaster the sound system while trying to keep up the original. I watched Fantasia while I was growing up and you were right about many differences of how they try to make the system sound crystal clear.

I also would've thought that they should add options on the audio menu when playing the Blu-Ray so a certain someone would choose the Blu-Ray mix or the original Fantasound mix. What do you think, Tony?

  • @FusionAngelFuAn That's exactly what I was expecting them to do; pack the Blu-ray with a variety of sound options, as well as provide the 1990 "General Release" cut of the film that features Deems Taylor's original audio tracks.

It'd been a full 10 years since the last time Fantasia was rereleased when this Blu-ray came along. Disney has no excuse.

  • You totally have to send this to Disney and say "This is how the Blu-Ray should sound"

  • nice!

  • Wow...

Compared to what the Blu-ray sounds like, your take on the Fantasound version definitely outshines the mix that came with the Blu-ray! :)

  • @darthvalor07 Thank you! n___n

  • Very Impressive Tony
