Donny was 26 years old in 1971, which is at about the age people usually develop the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. If this hadn't naturally occurred, I'm going to guess that he used marijuana and it exacerbated/sped up the illness.

It's too bad that medicine has not caught up with mental illness. The brain is the most important organ in the body without it nothing else can function, yet it's the most neglected as far as medicine is concerned. Research has not developed medication to address bi polar, depression or moodiness. There has been developments but as late as the 70's there was no help and many great artists were lost. That's why they took street drugs which exaserbated the situation.
