I grew up watching this! Thanks you so uch for uploading the series Rockabilly, you brought back some great memories for me! Every day when i'd get off work i'd watch Black Sheep Squadron. I seen EVERY episode!
When I was a little kid during the late 1970's,(kindergarden-1st grade)I remember watching this tv series(this is actually the very 1st time seeing the intro in more than 30 years).
@mybluebelly I'm not sure where they'd have the series where you're at. All I know is Amazon has part of it on DVD. I'm not familiar with Fighter Squadron (I probably saw it, I just have poor memory when it comes to movies)
@RockabillyAutopsy heh, i did find both seasons on dvd recently, and i think i got them in the mail around two weeks ago. Also found the old movie fighter squadron on dvd! Amazon to the rescue !
I had the honor to have breakfast with Pappy at the Pioneer restaurant in Oshkosh , WI before he passed. One of the greatest honors of my life. God bless all of our Marines! The show may have had a lot of fiction... But the beautiful aircraft and can do attitude were there.
@Brianhk45 Awesome! I ate at the Pioneer a few times but not with Pappy Boyington! (but going there with my aunts and uncles and grandparents was cool too).
This show featured in national television when i was 8 or 9 years old ... it is a waited show for a 9 yrs old kid at that time. it is an enjoyable show .. but it never inspire me to be a pilot.. instead i am enjoying myself .. cutting balls and removing ovary from cats and dogs these days
I was a HUGE fan of this show back in the day. Had this song on 45 RPM record even. I even got the opportunity to meet Pappy Boyington, shake his hand and get his autograph at the EAA annual Fly-In at Oshkosh WI. The experience was, how shall I say, somewhat sad. Years of alcohol and hard living had debilitated the great man, and he was hawking autographed artists renderings of himself in WWII scene for $10 a pop at a folding table. I was still proud to shake his hand though.
Man..me n my pops watched this show religiously..think it was on Tues nites... The Japanese ace....cant remember his name....he was always ..'Hey Boyington"...him n Pappy talkin junk back n forth... and the episode where those TWO BADASS P-38 Lightnings came into the fray was cool
@gdub454 I can't remember what nights it was on but I know that my dad, brother and I were glued to the set. And the "Hey Boy-yiin-taan" guy was Harachi. He didn't exist but I seem to have read about Pappy and other pilots talking junk back and forth in English and Japanese. I dunno if it's all right these days to think he was funny but he cracked me up something fierce.
VMF-214 still exist as a squadron till this day, currently they are flying the AV-8B Harrier. They were formerly stationed at Mcas El Toro near Santa Ana CA prior to the base closing in the mid 90's. Today I think that they are posted at Marine Base Camp Penalton or either Miramar.down the freeway.
I met one of the guys who was in this Squadron about 22 years ago at a Church camp in Buffalo, New York. He told me the show was pure fiction. I think it was still a good show though, they were good stories.
@RockabillyAutopsy Yeh he was pretty interesting, he talked about Pappy Boyington and a few experiences he had. He talked about some of the crashes they had at the landing strips at the time. I can't remember his name to save my life though. We were riding in the same vehicle and we were all discussing his experiences with WWII. Memorable experience. He was one of the speakers there.
I watched this show, the Baa Baa Black Sheep combat fighter squadron of World War Two; and it has its merits, good show. We can see at the end of the 1970s that World War Two is starting to become thin, as that Great Generation is older and retiring; and we are seeing a cultural shift that became self evident with the MTV of the 1980s; of a generation that knew nothing of the World Wars and Great Depression--so completely self serving, that their children are worse in hedonism this year 2010.
They may have hollywooded it up a little but Pappy Boyington and his "Black Sheep" were for real. They were one of the first to get the "bent wing bird". Best prop plane ever to be produced. P-51 included
@Slave2Reason The guy's in Europe may say so, but the Marine Corps still reveres the corsair. Who cares? both were fine planes, it's just what your preference is.
@wvufanngarner Actually, coming from a family w/ an Edwards test pilot, an naval aviator stationed on the Oriskany, a former B-29 pilot who won the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Vietnam Phantom pilot, and a professional stunt pilot... The consensus was the P-51, but like you say. Who cares?
@Slave2Reason I appreciate your family history, and the 51 was the best in the European theater. But I'm a former Marine, the corsair was the savior of the pacific. Both were ours.
i get amped just watching the intro..makes me think of being a kid and watching this!!

It is on NetFlix and is supposed to be a factual show. Boynton was their technical accuracy person (I forget the actual title)

too bad the show was COMPLETE fiction.
The Coursair didn't arrive in numbers until 1943 and was far superior to any Japanese fighter.
