Can anyone recommend similar anime? By similar, I mean deep, not episodic (for the most part), and hopefully with nice music?

Something that isn't hundreds of episodes (of if it is, then every single one of the episodes must be worth it).

For my part, I'd recommend Lain, Wolf's Rain, Madlax. Kemono no Souja Erin was also fairly unique. The Twelve Kingdoms was nice in it's own way.

Also, strangely enough, I almost never got bored watching the first 70 or so episodes of Kyou Kara Maoh.

This has to be one of the darkest animes out there, and I don't mean just gloomy either. You have to watch it in the dark lol I swear when they got to the surface I felt like I was going to be blinded it was so bright! This is a highly unique anime and a must see for anyone who truely likes a nice dark story.

Just finished watching it again for the fourth time and every time i watch it, i find something new i never realized before. My favorite anime of all time. Getting a tattoo of it to express my loyalty to the show haha.

"Texhnolyze" is one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever made! :)

The ending for Texhnolyze was a sad one but overall a brilliant anime for its year no doubt about that.

Only with 22 Episodes it didn't go far which is a shame.

You have to really put effort into watching it, i.e. it requires you to actively engage yourself in the show in order to obtain a clearer idea of what is actually happening.

Certainly do. The idea is basic, man against man, and the true nature of human kind, but it's so complex all the same. The "above" world always perplexed me. There was so much symbolism to be found.

other than that, i dunno about electronic music, but if youre looking for something messed up thats a total mind-fuck, you might wanna check out: boogiepop phantom, ergo proxy, and paranoia agent.

id pass on elfen lied, tho. its ok, but really nothing special imo.

It's psychedelic cyberpunk and crime fiction, with really dark theme, and amazing art and great and violent story. The screenplay is by Konaka Chiaki (Serial Experiments Lain, Hellsing, The Big O, Ghost Hound etc.) And produced by Ueda Yasuyuki (Ergo Proxy, Lain, NieA_7, and Hellsing director).

It's not feel-good entertainment, but if you like slow, atmosperic storytelling (mixed with the kind of intense parts featured in this AMV) that may not give easy answers, you might want to check it out. IMO it's one of the better mature animes. However be prepared to see it to the very end to get answers; it holds out many crucial points till the last few episodes and even then you might want to see it a second time.
