good review :) wish Id have seen it before I bought the phone, cause I really really hate it and Ive had nothing but trouble with it. any suggestions for a t-mobile touch screen that doesn't need a data plan to function?
@ogechi9 Change the network to another carrier (e.g. AT&T)? I don't know. Check with T-mobile for latest cost, I think the phone is only available as a pre-paid phone now. There is an IM client on the phone (Nimbuzz) which I *think* supports windows live messenger, but the client isn't very good.
@BrandonD293 It's faster than 500 kbit but slower than 2 Mbit. It's all relative. Good or bad depends on how much speed you're used to and how much speed you need. For me, it meant that my cell phone was giving me faster download speeds than my (old) home DSL provider.
@BrandonD293 Unless you're the type of person who expects every webpage to always load in under a fraction of a second, I think it is fast enough for facebook. I used to access facebook using the snaptu program and I never noticed an appreciable delay in loading information. But obviously your mileage can vary...especially if you do not get good 3G reception where you live.
It comes with the NimBuzz application which supports a variety of IM clients. You can also add some java apps to the phone, so you might also be able to add an AIM client that way. Check out the NimBuzz website for more info on their app.
@IronMan3252 I don't think you need a data plan to use Google Maps, only for web access. But as I had a data plan, I can't personally confirm that. You can use facebook via their limited web interface or through free Java apps like Snaptu.
@gousgounaki Thank you (I think). As far as I know, you can use *any* sound file on the phone for *any* alert (ring tone, SMS etc.). You can even create a sound file which is just silence in order to effectively disable some of the default alert sounds.
@0125477856 You can text pictures and video (though the quality of video is terrible due to the heavy compression). I never tried texting a song, but I think that might be possible. Not sure.
@ricekrispyplayer The radio is free and I believe that the GPS is too. As I had a data plan, I can't definitively tell you what doesn't work without a data plan. I read elsewhere that the data plan is only required for web browsing, but you might want to double check that with T-mobile.
@IMZEZ99 It's a T-mobile phone and you can only buy it new (as far as I know) from T-mobile. However, they don't list it as a choice on their list of prepaid phones. So my suggestion to ask them was to contact them to see whether it would be possible to either to buy this phone for use on a prepaid plan, or you could even ask them whether a second hand T-mobile Tap could work with a prepaid plan.
@kels2kol4u It's pretty terrible if compared to any half-decent digital camera, but compared to other 2 megapixel cell-phone cameras it's exactly what you expect. I would not rely on this camera to take any serious pictures. The quality is not good
@kissastranger If you have a PC, have you tried the included PC software that is on the phone? If not then the easiest way is to save photos to a microSD card in the phone (you'll have to buy one), and then use a USB card reader to connect the microSD card to your computer. Then you can just drag and drop photos.
You can also transfer files from the phone using bluetooth (very easy to do on a mac) or even emailing them as attachments.
@kissastranger I think you can only view YouTube videos as the phone doesn't support Flash. You might be able to download photos though. It might depend on the browser.
@thekara no there is no qwerty keypad for the 3 version only for the tap model i dont think you need it though i had to take mine back because it was a faulty handset got another one seems fine and the ringtones seem a lot louder plus the touch key pad text is a lot more fasteq and responsive than it is on my otherone i wonder why lol :s
@DEVON780 It's a small speaker, but it's hard to compare. Seemed loud enough for me, and it's louder than a Nexus One. But only you can decide whether it will be loud enough for you.
@bleekjun123 I am not an expert on cross-border wireless policies. If you can access T-mobile or a partner network of T-mobile in Mexico then it may well work. But I've no idea whether you will be charged a premium for using a web service in another country.
@bleekjun123 $10 a month with T-mobile USA. Without Internet it is not such a useful phone. I.e. you have a large screen which is suitable for viewing web pages. Texting is always going to be easier on a phone which has a keyboard, so if you don't want web access but expect to text a lot, I'd get a phone with a proper (numeric) keyboard.
i have this phone on 3 its a really good phone for the money but its got a few flaws the batt life is not that good it has a slow processer and takes a while to load up pics and games the touch screen on the other hand is very responsive and easy to use i dont think you need a stylis because its got the d pad to scroll up and down the menus its a nice looking cool little phone i love it apart from the flaws
Lots of websites host java applications. For applications like snaptu or the opera mini browser, you can just go their own websites. But there are also sites like getjar which host hundreds of java apps, not all of which are suitable for the Tap
The battery seems to last reasonably well. I would get a couple of days out of it easily without recharging. But mostly I always recharge every night out of habit, so I haven't done any extended tests.
Music player is basic, but functional. Not 3.5 mm, uses microUSB headset. Camera is very basic (like all other phone-based 2 megapixel cameras). Pictures can be viewed full size I think
In the T-mobile forums I thinK i have seen someone say that T-mobile told them that the data plan is needed for web browsing, but everything else should be ok. But as I *have* a data plan, I can't test that.
i have the phone, I love it. a way to keep your phone from being slow is keep all your pics, n music on the memory card and not the phone. And i got the phone for free... through T-Mobils special offers, which was rather nice.
Yes, and I have already found this to be my favourite and most useful thing about the phone. The Google Maps app is great and very powerful. E.g get directions from 'where you are' without having to specify where that is
Do you have to pay for the GPS to make the connection to your network or does it work as a stand alone? When you are browsing the google maps does it connects to the network?
Google maps has to pull data across the network. Not just the maps, but things like traffic information, restaurant reviews etc. I have a data plan so I don't know what happens if you don't have a data plan. Worth asking T-mobile about. I imagine (or hope) that you would be able to use Google Maps without a data plan, but not the web browser
A very good video i am getting the tap this week and was little worried but i can sleep easy now i pay 29.99 for the phone plan and 9.99 for the unlimited web so i think i will be fineeed your Email so i can contact you in future again thanks for your excellent reveiew
I think so, but am not 100% sure. I only say that because T-mobile have included an instant messaging app (Nimbuzz) on the phone. You'd have to ask someone who doesn't have the data plan.
Some people have had some problems playing YouTube videos. They have mostly worked for me. I haven't tried playing a video from the microSD card but I imagine that would be fine.
No. Any customer who wants a data plan (for web browsing, email etc) needs to buy a $10 per month data plan, or get a phone plan which includes 'unlimited web' as part of the package.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly. What plan are you on now? With my old phone I had the $6.99 a month data plan. So when I got the Tap this data plan was cancelled and I just started the new $10 per month plan.
I don't think myfaves gives you any data plan. Myfaves just covers the numbers that you can call. You either need a dedicated $10 data plan for this phone *or* you need one of the new plans which includes 'unlimited web', but this works out to be more expensive than buying the data plan separately.
Without a data plan, you can't use any applications that need to communicate over the network.
This means you could add apps for games or simple devices like calculators, calendars etc. But without a data plan it will not be easy to get those apps to the phone. I don't know how you would do this (unless you can transfer them to an SD card maybe)
YouTube videos accessed from the mobile YouTube site should launch the phones own video player. It works for me, but I've seen some people report problems watching YouTube videos on the phone.
No it is free. I haven't really used it much though I have set up accounts with Google Talk and Facebook on it. It feels quite slow to chat with the phone though (a combination of Nimbuzz and the phone's keyboard interface).
@Youngcream It has a Nimbuzz application which has support for AIM and many other IM clients. There are probably other AIM java apps that you can download.
very helpful review i have a dout wen u get the internet plan its like 10 dollars or close to that right?...that includes limited text messeging right?
@melisaespinosa94 The Internet plan is $10 per month unless you get an all inclusive talk+text+web plan, but this is more expensive than just getting the talk+text plan and then adding the data plan separately.
So that also covers the answers to your second question, texts are separate from the data plan.
hiii uhh i am getting this phone for christmas and my birthday maybe and im getting the internet and everything :] i have finally convinced my mom to upgrade and im getting it im excited but what games does this phone come with? and is it possible to like eithor use addicting games? or download games from addicting games onto the phone? and do you reccommend this?? and great review thanks
The phone comes with a few games, but they are all demos. I think T-mobile wants you to pay to upgrade them to full games. You can also buy more games from T-mobile's site.
Instead you can go to a site like 'getjar' and download free games. This is relatively easy to do. Though having said that, this is never going to be a hardcore gaming platform. Many people write games for phones where you use a physical keypad to control things. As this phone doesn't have one so not all java games will work
hiii, im getting this phone next week wednesday.. do you know if you need a memory chip to add songs from the computer, or to upload the pic in the phone to he computer?
No, you can store music, pictures, videos and files on the phone itself, but this is limited to 128 Mb. This space would also be used for emails, texts and any other java applications you downloaded.
So it's probably best to buy a microSD card if you want to store lots of things on the phone. I think 1Gb microSD cards can be bought for as little as $6 these days.

@kbradnam k thanks ill just have to add the 10 data plan thanks for ur help

i got the phone but without internet, so can you tell me what applications i cant use?
maac1505 2 years ago
Without a data plan, you can't use any applications that need to communicate over the network.
This means you could add apps for games or simple devices like calculators, calendars etc. But without a data plan it will not be easy to get those apps to the phone. I don't know how you would do this (unless you can transfer them to an SD card maybe)

is there a way to stream videos like youtube and others on the phone??
themanup 2 years ago
YouTube videos accessed from the mobile YouTube site should launch the phones own video player. It works for me, but I've seen some people report problems watching YouTube videos on the phone.

Do you know if you can download new apps on to this phone?
MangoSky1 2 years ago
@MangoSky1 If you watched the video you may have noticed that I show two apps that I downloaded for the phone. Snaptu and Opera mini
kbradnam 2 years ago
do you pay for adding the apps?
or can you just download them for free?
maac1505 2 years ago
Some apps are free. Some you have to pay for, and some are demos which need to be paid for to be fully unlocked.

To create a nimbuzz account does it cost money??
rockks190 2 years ago
No it is free. I haven't really used it much though I have set up accounts with Google Talk and Facebook on it. It feels quite slow to chat with the phone though (a combination of Nimbuzz and the phone's keyboard interface).

Good review and video! Thanks what is the phones built in memory and does it come with earphones?
AMADOUHOWES 2 years ago
@AMADOUHOWES It has 128 MB onboard memory. The phone comes with a pair of earbuds with a microphone but these have a microUSB connector.
kbradnam 2 years ago
does this phone have aim?
Youngcream 2 years ago
@Youngcream It has a Nimbuzz application which has support for AIM and many other IM clients. There are probably other AIM java apps that you can download.

very helpful review i have a dout wen u get the internet plan its like 10 dollars or close to that right?...that includes limited text messeging right?
melisaespinosa94 2 years ago
@melisaespinosa94 The Internet plan is $10 per month unless you get an all inclusive talk+text+web plan, but this is more expensive than just getting the talk+text plan and then adding the data plan separately.
So that also covers the answers to your second question, texts are separate from the data plan.

ugh sucks to hear but thnks big help :]

hiii uhh i am getting this phone for christmas and my birthday maybe and im getting the internet and everything :] i have finally convinced my mom to upgrade and im getting it im excited but what games does this phone come with? and is it possible to like eithor use addicting games? or download games from addicting games onto the phone? and do you reccommend this?? and great review thanks
bringbuffyback 2 years ago
The phone comes with a few games, but they are all demos. I think T-mobile wants you to pay to upgrade them to full games. You can also buy more games from T-mobile's site.
Instead you can go to a site like 'getjar' and download free games. This is relatively easy to do. Though having said that, this is never going to be a hardcore gaming platform. Many people write games for phones where you use a physical keypad to control things. As this phone doesn't have one so not all java games will work
kbradnam 2 years ago
which phone is this?
maxakashorty 2 years ago
@maxakashorty It's the T-mobile Tap (also known as the Huawei U7510)

hiii, im getting this phone next week wednesday.. do you know if you need a memory chip to add songs from the computer, or to upload the pic in the phone to he computer?
love7454 2 years ago
No, you can store music, pictures, videos and files on the phone itself, but this is limited to 128 Mb. This space would also be used for emails, texts and any other java applications you downloaded.
So it's probably best to buy a microSD card if you want to store lots of things on the phone. I think 1Gb microSD cards can be bought for as little as $6 these days.
