  • I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the reason why there wasn't a significant difference between the SSD and HDD when installing MGS4 is because there is a bottleneck from both having to read from the blu ray disc which is incredibly slow.

No one cares about installation times--you set down the controller and make yourself a sandwich. Where consumers really should be concerned is performance with sandbox titles that need to preload areas, which often creates microstuttering.

  • thats scott lowe? holy shit

  • I thought SSD was solid snake drive >:D

  • @sonne2 It is. The patriots just don't want you to know :D

  • This moron needs to look up the meaning of differential.

  • or skip to 0:00 to skip ad

  • What the vid "PS3 7200rpm vs 5400rpm on Killzone 2"

    If a 7200 can improve performance over a 5400....

How do you even get a job at IGN mate?!

  • Buddy, you need to correct this video!

SSD can HALF track loading times in Gran Tourismo.

SSD only good for installing internet games? Mate, have you EVER looked at the HDD activity of a decent large-world game?!

The SSD is bound to make a huge difference!

  • These SSD's are great for people that have a custom firmware PS3 :)

  • SSD is very expensive. when i think about people putting SSD into their PS3, the only image come into my mind is an arab with a huge oil mine in his backyard.

I have a 2000 dollar high-end laptop (Thinkpad W520), and i dont even have a SSD installed on that.

  • @AERoVALKYRiE i know right whats wrong with hdd, cant you like wait another 5 mins

  • metal gear solid 4 FTW BEST SERIES EVEERRRR

  • what is a SSD and what is a HDD?

  • @mathdestroyer228 Let's keep it simple shall we? :P

SSD - Solid State Drive, the newer standard, more expensive but a lot faster loading/reading time :P

HDD - Hard Disk Drive, the older standard, cheaper but slower than SSD ;)

Also, SSD doesn't got any mechanical parts, as HDD do have them = SSD doesn't make a single noise ^_^

  • @1darkonyx1 how can i change my PS3's/my wife's hard drive? i want SSD! do i have to go to some kinda elctronics shop and ask some retard there to change it and pay like $50/Php 2000?

  • I think I'll jus stick with my stock HDD, A few seconds aint worth how much them HDD are

  • @ThaGamingPoo yeah but flash drive has its own speed too like if you look at it, it says 16x 32x speed just like discs... i think you know what i mean :)

  • solid snake drive :)

  • downloads data from blu-ray derr

  • installing games to the drive is bottlenecked by the 2x blu ray drive .

  • does it counts for ur tv also?

  • Dumb to test CD to HD because its the speed of the drive not the HD at that point. Nice try though

  • @grimreapper - Haha, I know. I didn't think they where seriously going to test that! BDD to HDD is obviously going to take the same amount of time because the performance is bottlenecked by the BDD Drive. :3

  • wtf bioshock need 15 min...........

  • what's SSD?

  • if i have games in ps3 not cd game in the ps3 if i play online all the game will remove

  • ahhah 150 $ for 2 seconds xD

  • @Pupixario Look at the difference for Bionic Commander.

  • @Pupixario The speed of SSD's have increased since 2009 btw

  • @Pupixario Dude, decent SSD are like $300-$500... I'm just going with a HDD with 500 GB, and 7200 rpm for like $50... I mean, really.

  • @hypernova1024 - I don't think there's much point in buying an SSD for a PS3, you're right and better off just buying a massive HDD with loads of storage for your stuff!

  • @MyRandomReviews And faster speeds with a 7200 rpm :)

  • Is Snake getting old ???

  • I'm still trying to figure out why he tested INSTALLING MGS4 data. That has NOTHING to do with HDD/SSD speed. They are BOTH dependent on the speed of the blu-ray drive.

  • @mnagmobile Read and write my friend the hardrive must read the information and then write it to the hard drive thats why tthey do it.

  • @mnagmobile Nope. The blu ray drive writes (installing) and reads (loading) data to and from the system's hard drive. All PS3's have 2X blu ray drives and 5400 rpm hard drives, and he's testing with a SSD in place of the system's hard drive. Honestly, I plan to just get a 7200 rpm hard drive, not a solid state.

  • @hypernova1024 Solid States do go up to 7200RPM........

  • @5pac3c0w60y But they're MUCH more expensive.... like $50 vs. $300. Plus, he never indicates which speed he is using in the video, likely also a 5400 rpm considering how he only saved 2 seconds on the infamous 9 GB MGS4 preliminary installation (first time you play the game, usually takes 7-8 mins).

  • @5pac3c0w60y Solid States don't have rpms lol. There are no moving parts, hence the name "solid state".

  • @5pac3c0w60y Solid States don't have rpms lol. There are no moving parts, hence the name "solid state".

  • @UncleJer410 i'll be using a Hybrid solid state. A hybrid drive combines the features of an HDD and an SSD in one unit, containing a large HDD, with a smaller SSD cache to improve performance of frequently accessed files. These can offer near-SSD performance in most applications at a lower price than an SSD.

  • metal gear solid 4 is a pain in the ass game

  • what about a seagate momentus xt? It's suppose to take a few uses before the ssd part of the drive becomes efficient. My ps3 crapped out on my and Im pretty sure its the hard drive but I would like everyones opinion on this before I buy another hard drive.

  • SDD's a their TRIM?

That drive will die and slow down.

  • amazon_ebaycodes_Playstationnetwork_targetgift_nintendopoints codes-emailed-to-you!-hitmyname

  • on my xbox 360 a 374MB takes about 15 seconds

  • @badmonk3829 in your greatest dreams

  • i think when you install metal gear solid 4 it's the same speed because blue ray is just kind of slow xD

  • check my vid for psn points rate and comment add me if you want my psn id is in the vid

  • 1. NO MORE ADS!

    2. YouTubeAdblocker, com!

    3. Copy Paste and Thumb Up to let others know!

  • wth it takes 12 minutes to download a 374 mb file!? Why does it take me hours? :(

  • @paologoco you probably have slow internet.

  • @paologoco slow internet

  • Also you got to remember, it doesn't matter how fast the hard drive is, if the data transfer from the source (in this case, BD-ROM) isn't going to take advantage of it, drive speed makes no difference….now if you jailbreak a PS3, and play something like GT5 or something that will show difference, but at the time this video was made, Jailbreaking was LONG LONG away

  • it's really not worth the money to put it inside a PlayStation 3. More of my opinion to put it inside your machine. And put the OS on it.

  • it's really not worth the money to put it inside a PlayStation 3. More of my opinion to put it inside your machine.

  • THESE ADS ARE FUCKING RIDICULOUS! I GO ON THE INTERNET TO GET AWAY FROM ADS NOT THAT THEY ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH ON TV!!!!!

  • @I3331934 youtube has more adverts than pearl & dean.

  • @I3331934 adblock

  • @I3331934 use firefox doesn't show ads bizar :o

  • I'm ment sata on my last comment instead of dat and someone plz answer my question

  • Will a data 160 gb 7200 rpm make the ps3 overheat or anything

  • @ndaniel1997

There was one website that tested that. The results were that there's minimal temperature difference between 5400 and 7200 RPM.

  • pretty cool, but not worth the extra money IMO... thanks for the video

  • Does SSD works on PS3 SLIM ?

And how and where to put SSD on PS3 SLIM ?

do i have to conect SSD with USB ?

    PLEASE HELP

  • I beat MGS4 in like 30 days haha!

    (Fuckin' Long game)

  • @OPTICNATIONSUCKS took me 10 hours....

  • @Scamwatcher I was joking ...

  • 5400rpm hdd vs an ssd, hmm who do think will win

  • Although fragile and with technology that might be obsolete in just some more couple of years, the HDD has more space, and is cheaper, thus having the best price-product relationship.

SSD are still in 'diapers', and in fact, flash cards are as big as SSDs but even cheaper. A nice idea (I don't know if it was already exploited) would be a SD card adaptor to a SSD case so that you can install it wherever you want, be it a console, or a computer.

  • Where can you get this!?

  • ssd ftw!

  • lol the old ps3 software in the xmb and playstation store is a lot shittier then the new.

  • But if you are like me and don't care when it finishes as long as it does it is fine. Plus it is pretty expensive isn't it?

  • LOL

  • HDD - moar space? Moar space - PROFIT!

  • you have to make this with gt5

  • waste off money, a SSD on the PS3 system is for no use it whont reach it's fully potential, wich then again is better to get a 7200 RPM drive on 500 GB for around 60 USD than burning your wallet on a SSD.

  • It's only going to install as fast as it reads it from the BluRay which is what? 9MB/s at best? The real differance is when it reads that installed data from the SSD and passes thru the system, an SSD also has 0.1ms of response time so it gives you the maximum potential of the PS3's hardwear.

Take GTA IV for example, roughly 4GBs are installed, versus the stock HDD, it has less loading, and even increased my FPS when i was driving at blur speed. I can't say it justified the SSD cost tho.

  • @XenanWolf it just shows that some people know more about GAMES than they do computer hardware :)

  • I just wanna ask: What specific HDD does the PS3 use? I know they're notebook 2.5" HDDs. But do they have to be SATA? And what other specs are there?

  • Not a BIG difference in speed, but the biggest advantage of an SSD is that it won't generate as much heat as a spinning hard drive, which may or may not come into play; it depends on where the drive is located in relation to the PS3's internal components. It might be too far away for it to make any sort of difference there.

  • I got the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid Drive 500GB for my PS3. It's the best of both worlds!

    watch?v=zuWdruZev8I

  • Who the fuck sits there and wait for the game to install?Brush ur teeth take a shower or something and stop BITCHING We all want to go light speed.

  • I'm glad the 360 doesnt feature long-ass install times. I own both consoles, seriously, what gives. It takes forever.

  • @Evilrex500 few minutes of installing didnt kill you (sorry ofr my bad eng)

  • OMFG! A new Layout!

  • oh i guess i dont have a life because i wasted 5 seconds total..................

  • SSDs really show their potentials in computers.

However I wouldn't buy one because a fast SATAII 7200 RPM 1TB HDD costs me around £30 to £40 from ebuyer. When a 64GB SSD would cost me A LOT more.

  • Metal gear solid 4 is worth the time it takes to install.

  • @PureFalcon1 Yeah and the people that can't wake are impatient little bitches, seriously its like 3-5 minutes

  • @PureFalcon1 i bet it scares you on act 2: VS octopus? it freaks me out seriously this is why id say some people then either get someone to play the scene for them or stop playing personaly i play act 1 and im gonna look for a saved game at act 3

  • @PureFalcon1 Finally someone with some sense. It's worth the time it takes to install, it's worth the time it takes to play. It's worth the time is takes to sit back at the end, with that strange mixture of excitement and melancholy that only Metal Gear Solid can possibly deliver. Hideo Kojima, I salute you. Xbots everywhere, stfu and give it a try before trolling about such a minor issue with the game (after the first install, the act installs are like 2 mins at most...)

  • the poor thing about ssd... it memory is low

  • For a 64gb SSD will cost you about $150

  • When Bionic Commando finishes the install on the SSD the HDD is at 33% not 42%.

  • 0:01 so yuu can skip ads

  • but sdd is costly right!!

  • \m/,

  • whatever. as long as people enjoy the game.

  • Is he talking about a 'sausage drive'?

  • well how bout a PS3 v 360 HDDs.... but then again... i dont wanna sit here for 2 hours watching

  • Bluray players are like less than half the price of a ps3 today

  • @darkstar3x16 they weren't when i bought my ps3 though

  • And whats really weird

sony and microsoft both ran on losses because of their consoles

the wii despite how crappy it is, made the most profit

xbox has more gamers because online games like halo and mw2 and gears and so forth are more fun

graphics has nothing to do with it.

i mean who doesn't like to play xbox live with halo and all that crap?

yet again sony is a pretty good company but they make their mony selling tvs and crap.

  • @Forman6 I dont like to play my Xbox or Halo....

    :(

But I do like to play Killzone on my ps3 and Gears of War on my Xbox(Which broke a couple months back)

  • For those people who say that a SSD is out of their price range and were looking into buying one, Seagate now has what they call a Hybrid 500GB SSD available for $129.99, plus tax. I just read about it online- check it out. I wonder how this would work with the PS3 Break, which supposedly loads/rips the game from the BD onto your HD. Anyway know about that because I just read about that last week...?

  • huh isnt the MGS installation read from blu ray drive. So how fast the bluray drive read is how fast you get unless it is faster than the hdd then there is a comparsion.

  • I don't believe game installation is a worthy test.

I'm quite surprised that the SSD even out-performed the HDD while installing MGS4, because the fact is it can only install as fast as it can read from a disk, and it can install faster onto a HDD than the Blu-Ray drive can read from a disc, as such, the disk read time is the maximum speed you're going to get while installing, the 2 second difference, would be the fact it takes a little time for the HDD to start spinning and begin writing data.

  • how do u get that black backround

  • Way to compare two totally different technologies. Is this a review for the ignorant? This is all common sense.

  • @harower It's comparing what it meas in terms of PS3 loading speeds etc. And it's showing how much of a difference it is, not just "This ones faster"

  • I believe It's mostly for not-so-tech-savvy people who may be getting talked into buying an SSD for their PS3, they don't understand what the main differences are, and just want to see the results with their own eyes.

  • what a ssd

  • SSD doesn't help disc installs because they're limited by the speed of the slow bluray drive. the 2x bluray drive in the PS3 has a 9 MB/sec transfer speed... a far cry from the the write speeds of even standard platter hard drives.

  • @Uejji Not accounting for downloads though.

Jesus though. Anyone notice how much of an insight into how much MGS sucks just for it's install times? Just use an install whilst you're away from computer option.

  • is the sdd only in the slim?

  • whts the tech info on the ss drive tht ur putting into the ps3

  • really because the last time i tried to update a game for the ps3 it almost took an hour just for one game to update when xbox only takes 3 seconds.

  • This doesn't work for me, because Sony decided that if I want to keep the OtherOS feature that I paid for, I won't be allowed to use the PlayStation store anymore. Bastards.

  • wait so that guy downloaded MGS4!?!?!?!

  • @neyo509 no he tested disc based and downloadable games. The ssd mainly benefits downloadable games.

  • 50 Free Youtube Subs Here watch?v=uD5Zi4ZGLhM

  • i still think the 360 version looks better side to side.

  • @5324er are you retarded?

  • @leerey14 no why?

  • @5324er the only reason why the 360 would look better is because developers tend to make the game for the 360 and transfer it to the ps3, therefore losing it's smoothness and color and whatnot. That's why ps3 exclusive titles look absolutely beautiful compared to xbox 360 exclusives.

  • @RetartedWaffles relax dude i was just kidding on that comment. all the stuff u said was correct and im not in favor of the 360 at all. fuck the 360. ps3 is the shit.

  • @Anoush13 stop putting "ok,now do...oh wait" its gay.just let ppl know the point u are trying to say, bitch.

  • @ronaldli5 2 things I have to say to that.

First off, it was only on two videos which I did this.

    Second, I'm speaking the truth aren't I?

  • @Anoush13 i am talking about everyone who does this, stop trying to get into the trend. and secondly i respect the fact of what u are saying but please fucking stop putting gay sarcasm in ur sentence.

  • @Anoush13

    An ssd isn't an hdd...

  • @Anoush13 What?

  • @Anoush13 Fagget

  • @Anoush13 lol

  • @Anoush13 who cares at least you dont have to play 200 dollars to upgrade your harddrive on a ps3

  • @Anoush13 actually, if you happen to have a 1Tb usb external hard drive at home, then you can use that on your xbox.... bitch!

  • @mclmatty

to put games, on it? PS3 can also use a external hdd but only for media content.

  • @Aaymaann if you want

  • @Anoush13 awell...we still have better games and online.

  • @paddyboy619 Ugh... Being forced to pay $60 for the same service you can get on PSN? No! Better Games? What games do you guys have? Halo, Gears of War, Fable III, and Forza. Halo is good and Gears is decent. Fable III is good, but PS3 is the king for RPG and Forza is nothing compared to Gran Turismo. All you have is a few shooters! PS3 has all kind of genres of games!

  • @Anoush13 wat does rpg mean? really pathetic games? is that was u guys got? O.o?

  • @legendgamer831 he is wright i have a ps3 xbox360 wii pc and psp. i only have fable and halo for the xbox360 and that kenect give me a break Microsoft is 5 years behind. ps2 had eye toy and that failed. micro is just repeating mistakes and vista was bad besides eyetoy was like half the price of the kenict when it came out or less + i have most of my games for the ps3 GOF 1,2,3 , motorstorm 1+2 Mgs4, Mag,uncharted 2 r j ex don't go bashing every system j b ur's failed when it came out.

  • @BlueFurryFox wait wat? o.o..

  • @Anoush13 so ur sayig ps3 is the king for really pathetic games? O.o?

  • how did he get that black background

  • wow a few seconds i think i will survive a few seconds of no gameplay

  • The reason the MGS3 install wasn't especialy faster was due to the limited speed of the PS3's 2X Blu-Ray drive which isn't especially fast compared to some of the newer PC drives that will do an excess of up to 16X speed.

  • @Dant2142 im getting a ps3 slim 250 gb. that should install stuff quick as fuck.

  • @YummyTacoz909 Afraid not, the hard drive is the same speed (5400 RPM) and so is the Blu-Ray drive. The increase of cashe on the HDD, and it's increased areal density might make it faster, but not noticeably much.

  • can i put an usb keyboard on a ps3?

  • @TheCodeLyokofreak are you serious.. do u really need somebody to answer that question for u..?

  • @MrFatCurry yes

  • @TheCodeLyokofreak, well yes, if it's connected via USB, then just plug the keyboard into your PS3, wait a bit, then just test it out.

Remember: It will work only through USB.

ANY MORE QUESTIONS YOU WANT ME TO ANSWER...?

  • @TheCodeLyokofreak Yes you can

  • Hey why are you wearing nasa t-shirt.........

  • solid state is best used for laptops n desktops even tho ps3 is technically a desktop, solid states full usage is a waste on a gaming system unless your ALWAYS downloading stuff and you have 0 patience.

  • my copy of mgs4 installs and loads in secs wierd

  • Gee what can I do in my 2 sec spare time...hmmm...oopps my 2 seconds up, damn! Lol!

  • idiots, why are idiots reviewing things they have no clue about.

FIRST is what kind of ssd.

yea apples 2 oranges -huge difference.

i did this test when ps3 slim first cam out and i saw a decent diffence in cooling and speed.

never shut down ever on a ssd from overhearting.

    that alone a big deal.

the drive i tested was a 120 gig barefoot controller ie like gen 2 like a ocz vertex etc.

i wont say the brand i used but they tend to be alike depending on firmware.

ssd perform diff then a hd.

  • soo ssd can be put into a ps3? how and how do i put my saved data over to the ssd?

  • @airbornghost123 Use an external hard-drive.

  • lol ragdolll kungfu presented by sprint... thats how i got it for free. that was a long time ago

  • acually you can get a 256GB SSD for about $500 NOT $1000

but its still to costly for just a few seconds faster
