I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the reason why there wasn't a significant difference between the SSD and HDD when installing MGS4 is because there is a bottleneck from both having to read from the blu ray disc which is incredibly slow.
No one cares about installation times--you set down the controller and make yourself a sandwich. Where consumers really should be concerned is performance with sandbox titles that need to preload areas, which often creates microstuttering.
@coinoperatedgirl7 I completely agree. Seems like this guy doesn't understand why a Disc to Drive load wouldn't be the same speed as an Internet to Drive load... The obvious bottleneck is the Disc drive... Wow!
SSD is very expensive. when i think about people putting SSD into their PS3, the only image come into my mind is an arab with a huge oil mine in his backyard.
I have a 2000 dollar high-end laptop (Thinkpad W520), and i dont even have a SSD installed on that.
@1darkonyx1 how can i change my PS3's/my wife's hard drive? i want SSD! do i have to go to some kinda elctronics shop and ask some retard there to change it and pay like $50/Php 2000?
@ThaGamingPoo yeah but flash drive has its own speed too like if you look at it, it says 16x 32x speed just like discs... i think you know what i mean :)
@grimreapper - Haha, I know. I didn't think they where seriously going to test that! BDD to HDD is obviously going to take the same amount of time because the performance is bottlenecked by the BDD Drive. :3
@hypernova1024 - I don't think there's much point in buying an SSD for a PS3, you're right and better off just buying a massive HDD with loads of storage for your stuff!
I'm still trying to figure out why he tested INSTALLING MGS4 data. That has NOTHING to do with HDD/SSD speed. They are BOTH dependent on the speed of the blu-ray drive.
@mnagmobile Nope. The blu ray drive writes (installing) and reads (loading) data to and from the system's hard drive. All PS3's have 2X blu ray drives and 5400 rpm hard drives, and he's testing with a SSD in place of the system's hard drive. Honestly, I plan to just get a 7200 rpm hard drive, not a solid state.
@5pac3c0w60y But they're MUCH more expensive.... like $50 vs. $300. Plus, he never indicates which speed he is using in the video, likely also a 5400 rpm considering how he only saved 2 seconds on the infamous 9 GB MGS4 preliminary installation (first time you play the game, usually takes 7-8 mins).
@UncleJer410 i'll be using a Hybrid solid state. A hybrid drive combines the features of an HDD and an SSD in one unit, containing a large HDD, with a smaller SSD cache to improve performance of frequently accessed files. These can offer near-SSD performance in most applications at a lower price than an SSD.
what about a seagate momentus xt? It's suppose to take a few uses before the ssd part of the drive becomes efficient. My ps3 crapped out on my and Im pretty sure its the hard drive but I would like everyones opinion on this before I buy another hard drive.
Also you got to remember, it doesn't matter how fast the hard drive is, if the data transfer from the source (in this case, BD-ROM) isn't going to take advantage of it, drive speed makes no difference….now if you jailbreak a PS3, and play something like GT5 or something that will show difference, but at the time this video was made, Jailbreaking was LONG LONG away
Although fragile and with technology that might be obsolete in just some more couple of years, the HDD has more space, and is cheaper, thus having the best price-product relationship.
SSD are still in 'diapers', and in fact, flash cards are as big as SSDs but even cheaper. A nice idea (I don't know if it was already exploited) would be a SD card adaptor to a SSD case so that you can install it wherever you want, be it a console, or a computer.
waste off money, a SSD on the PS3 system is for no use it whont reach it's fully potential, wich then again is better to get a 7200 RPM drive on 500 GB for around 60 USD than burning your wallet on a SSD.
It's only going to install as fast as it reads it from the BluRay which is what? 9MB/s at best? The real differance is when it reads that installed data from the SSD and passes thru the system, an SSD also has 0.1ms of response time so it gives you the maximum potential of the PS3's hardwear.
Take GTA IV for example, roughly 4GBs are installed, versus the stock HDD, it has less loading, and even increased my FPS when i was driving at blur speed. I can't say it justified the SSD cost tho.
Not a BIG difference in speed, but the biggest advantage of an SSD is that it won't generate as much heat as a spinning hard drive, which may or may not come into play; it depends on where the drive is located in relation to the PS3's internal components. It might be too far away for it to make any sort of difference there.
@PureFalcon1 i bet it scares you on act 2: VS octopus? it freaks me out seriously this is why id say some people then either get someone to play the scene for them or stop playing personaly i play act 1 and im gonna look for a saved game at act 3
@PureFalcon1 Finally someone with some sense. It's worth the time it takes to install, it's worth the time it takes to play. It's worth the time is takes to sit back at the end, with that strange mixture of excitement and melancholy that only Metal Gear Solid can possibly deliver. Hideo Kojima, I salute you. Xbots everywhere, stfu and give it a try before trolling about such a minor issue with the game (after the first install, the act installs are like 2 mins at most...)
For those people who say that a SSD is out of their price range and were looking into buying one, Seagate now has what they call a Hybrid 500GB SSD available for $129.99, plus tax. I just read about it online- check it out. I wonder how this would work with the PS3 Break, which supposedly loads/rips the game from the BD onto your HD. Anyway know about that because I just read about that last week...?
huh isnt the MGS installation read from blu ray drive. So how fast the bluray drive read is how fast you get unless it is faster than the hdd then there is a comparsion.

Jesus though. Anyone notice how much of an insight into how much MGS sucks just for it's install times? Just use an install whilst you're away from computer option.
This doesn't work for me, because Sony decided that if I want to keep the OtherOS feature that I paid for, I won't be allowed to use the PlayStation store anymore. Bastards.
@5324er the only reason why the 360 would look better is because developers tend to make the game for the 360 and transfer it to the ps3, therefore losing it's smoothness and color and whatnot. That's why ps3 exclusive titles look absolutely beautiful compared to xbox 360 exclusives.
@RetartedWaffles relax dude i was just kidding on that comment. all the stuff u said was correct and im not in favor of the 360 at all. fuck the 360. ps3 is the shit.
@Anoush13 i am talking about everyone who does this, stop trying to get into the trend. and secondly i respect the fact of what u are saying but please fucking stop putting gay sarcasm in ur sentence.
@paddyboy619 Ugh... Being forced to pay $60 for the same service you can get on PSN? No! Better Games? What games do you guys have? Halo, Gears of War, Fable III, and Forza. Halo is good and Gears is decent. Fable III is good, but PS3 is the king for RPG and Forza is nothing compared to Gran Turismo. All you have is a few shooters! PS3 has all kind of genres of games!
@legendgamer831 he is wright i have a ps3 xbox360 wii pc and psp. i only have fable and halo for the xbox360 and that kenect give me a break Microsoft is 5 years behind. ps2 had eye toy and that failed. micro is just repeating mistakes and vista was bad besides eyetoy was like half the price of the kenict when it came out or less + i have most of my games for the ps3 GOF 1,2,3 , motorstorm 1+2 Mgs4, Mag,uncharted 2 r j ex don't go bashing every system j b ur's failed when it came out.
The reason the MGS3 install wasn't especialy faster was due to the limited speed of the PS3's 2X Blu-Ray drive which isn't especially fast compared to some of the newer PC drives that will do an excess of up to 16X speed.
@YummyTacoz909 Afraid not, the hard drive is the same speed (5400 RPM) and so is the Blu-Ray drive. The increase of cashe on the HDD, and it's increased areal density might make it faster, but not noticeably much.
solid state is best used for laptops n desktops even tho ps3 is technically a desktop, solid states full usage is a waste on a gaming system unless your ALWAYS downloading stuff and you have 0 patience.
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the reason why there wasn't a significant difference between the SSD and HDD when installing MGS4 is because there is a bottleneck from both having to read from the blu ray disc which is incredibly slow.

SSD - Solid State Drive, the newer standard, more expensive but a lot faster loading/reading time :P
HDD - Hard Disk Drive, the older standard, cheaper but slower than SSD ;)

NARUTOLOVESHINATA202 1 year ago
really because the last time i tried to update a game for the ps3 it almost took an hour just for one game to update when xbox only takes 3 seconds.
MrFalloutUniverse 1 year ago
This doesn't work for me, because Sony decided that if I want to keep the OtherOS feature that I paid for, I won't be allowed to use the PlayStation store anymore. Bastards.

i still think the 360 version looks better side to side.
5324er 1 year ago
@5324er are you retarded?
leerey14 1 year ago
@leerey14 no why?
5324er 1 year ago
@5324er the only reason why the 360 would look better is because developers tend to make the game for the 360 and transfer it to the ps3, therefore losing it's smoothness and color and whatnot. That's why ps3 exclusive titles look absolutely beautiful compared to xbox 360 exclusives.
RetartedWaffles 1 year ago
@RetartedWaffles relax dude i was just kidding on that comment. all the stuff u said was correct and im not in favor of the 360 at all. fuck the 360. ps3 is the shit.

paddyboy619 1 year ago
@paddyboy619 Ugh... Being forced to pay $60 for the same service you can get on PSN? No! Better Games? What games do you guys have? Halo, Gears of War, Fable III, and Forza. Halo is good and Gears is decent. Fable III is good, but PS3 is the king for RPG and Forza is nothing compared to Gran Turismo. All you have is a few shooters! PS3 has all kind of genres of games!
Anoush13 1 year ago
@Anoush13 wat does rpg mean? really pathetic games? is that was u guys got? O.o?
legendgamer831 1 year ago
@legendgamer831 he is wright i have a ps3 xbox360 wii pc and psp. i only have fable and halo for the xbox360 and that kenect give me a break Microsoft is 5 years behind. ps2 had eye toy and that failed. micro is just repeating mistakes and vista was bad besides eyetoy was like half the price of the kenict when it came out or less + i have most of my games for the ps3 GOF 1,2,3 , motorstorm 1+2 Mgs4, Mag,uncharted 2 r j ex don't go bashing every system j b ur's failed when it came out.

flexer122 1 year ago 25
The reason the MGS3 install wasn't especialy faster was due to the limited speed of the PS3's 2X Blu-Ray drive which isn't especially fast compared to some of the newer PC drives that will do an excess of up to 16X speed.
Dant2142 1 year ago
@Dant2142 im getting a ps3 slim 250 gb. that should install stuff quick as fuck.
YummyTacoz909 1 year ago
@YummyTacoz909 Afraid not, the hard drive is the same speed (5400 RPM) and so is the Blu-Ray drive. The increase of cashe on the HDD, and it's increased areal density might make it faster, but not noticeably much.

can i put an usb keyboard on a ps3?
TheCodeLyokofreak 1 year ago
@TheCodeLyokofreak are you serious.. do u really need somebody to answer that question for u..?
MrFatCurry 1 year ago
@MrFatCurry yes
TheCodeLyokofreak 1 year ago
@TheCodeLyokofreak, well yes, if it's connected via USB, then just plug the keyboard into your PS3, wait a bit, then just test it out.
Remember: It will work only through USB.
ANY MORE QUESTIONS YOU WANT ME TO ANSWER...?

solid state is best used for laptops n desktops even tho ps3 is technically a desktop, solid states full usage is a waste on a gaming system unless your ALWAYS downloading stuff and you have 0 patience.

idiots, why are idiots reviewing things they have no clue about.
FIRST is what kind of ssd.
yea apples 2 oranges -huge difference.
i did this test when ps3 slim first cam out and i saw a decent diffence in cooling and speed.
never shut down ever on a ssd from overhearting.
that alone a big deal.
the drive i tested was a 120 gig barefoot controller ie like gen 2 like a ocz vertex etc.
i wont say the brand i used but they tend to be alike depending on firmware.
ssd perform diff then a hd.
