I'm assuming 2 things based on the fact that you are sousaphone players:

1) You overplay

2) You puff your cheeks.

This sounds like a train wreck. Dancing is OK. Our marching band uses Contras. You are NEVER supposed to puff your cheeks NOR overblow. That is arbitrary and overkill for a tuba line. Be mellow, felt, and not heard, if you know what I mean.

What I mean when I said be mellow is that you should have presence within the band. Just because everyone is supposed to fit into the tuba does not give the tuba to fit outside of everyone else. I know these are just tuba players but I agree with mustang20XII: "Don't sacrifice intonation for volume". My band director says "Don't sacrifice tone for volume" but it's all the same. And no, sousaphone players ARE NOT supposed to puff their cheeks. That's elementary mistake number 1.

@tubamaestro55 well put sir and i must agree with u on all but one. while most ppl say dont puff your its quite hard to play low notes in which the instrument was intend for. puffin allows most air to be let thru the horn while the lips are relaxed to get the lower notes in the octave. now. puffing in the mid to upper range really doesnt make THAT big of a diff. its all about personal preference.

Please, please, PLEASE tell me that you don't do this kind of stuff all the time...southern college style of instrument playing can be incredibly damaging to sound quality, no matter what they tell you...that is NOT a characteristic sound of the instrument.
