Eydie Swings The Bues became one of my favorite albums about fifteen minutes into my first listen! What sound! What arrangement! What a bleesing to have found it! Thank You very much Eydie!
ok the best 67 cents i ever spent were on this album(...swings the blues)-goat hill records costamesa-ca-it was in the 99 cent section on sale...ok so tell me more about this music critic...
From the great album "Eydie Swings The Blues," which a famous music critic recently made fun of and I could tell immediately he'd never heard the album. It is terrific start to finish and part of a series of six outstanding albums Gorme made for ABC-Paramount records.
The singers nowadays couldn't do this. Michael Bubble tried to ding live on Oprah and screwed up big time. The singers from that era wouldn't have a chance today because they were individuals and didn't sound like anyone else.
I love the fact that she sang this live on TV. It's a true testament to her talent that she can sing it this well without a hitch, hitting every note. Today nobody could do this. Eydie's the best.
At the time this was done, everyone sang live! THere were many great talents at the time, who could do this without a hitch...I doubt if 1% of today's 'singers' could even think about singing live.
Nice to hear Einar Swan's great song performed at a faster, more jazzy tempo for a change. It certainly has the potential for it, but the standard renditions (like Sinatra's) are all quite slow and tearfully sentimental -- because of the lyrics, naturally. Eydie ignores them, and the result is refreshening!
Wow, the way she ends this number convinces you she's GLAD her lover has gone! Another great uptempo version of this song is Keely Smith's. Nice find.
I wonder if this clip is from when she and Steve hosted 'The Golden Circle' in fall of 1959?! I'm almost positive that the dress she's wearing here is the same as the one she sports in the press photo from that special (then again, it could've been an older photo). The only thing that outshines all that sparkle is Eydie's peerless performance! Quel drame!
However, Eydie could have filmed her part during the show you mentioned and they could have added it into this show. Eydie is also seen as part of an all-star version of "Silent Night" at the end of the show, so who knows?
Why thanks for the additional info! If this USO show features an intro by President Eisenhower, then it's from Christmas of 1958; I recently found a copy of it on VHS with that date. As for the dress being the same in both shows, I have read that Eydie paid for her Tonight Show wardrobe out of her own pocket, so maybe she's just getting some mileage out of this glamorous gown? :)
Thanks again for posting - I really hope you'll be able to share more clips from this special.
Oy, I get what you're saying - this segment could have filmed at any time and simply inserted into the compilation video. Took me long enough to get that one! Sorry! I think I was too wowed by her powerhouse performance to comprehend what you meant.
Regardless of my chattering...thanks for letting us enjoy this great lady of song.
thank you for this never-seen-before vintage jewel. just love it, love it ,love it! Giving it a 5 star rating because Ratings are disabled on this post!

Teresa Brewer released a nice recording of this tune some years ago for Coral records; I believe it was the title cut of one of her LP's.

Does Eydie have the right to sing the blues? With this performance, you know that Eydie has the right to sing ANYTHING.

This clip isn't from a show with Steve Lawrence. It's from a solo appearance Eydie Gorme did for a holiday all-star USO show.
