I've been stopped while carrying concealed and followed this example. Worked great, the trooper never asked me to remove the weapon just looked at my carry permit and D.L. sending me merrily on my way.

this officer was decent and treaated the man with respect. The man treated the officer with the same respect. I wish all contact with officers went this well. Most officers are like this one. The few who do not respect their fellow citizens and try to abuse their authority need to be exposed and offered an opportunity to find other employment and the good police officers should be given a handshake for doing a tough job.
I would have told the cop for MY SAFETY i will NOT reach over and physically hand him my firearm. That is total BS and could easily turn bad. The cop should never ask anyone to do so. If I am legally carrying a firearm and inform the officer and it is not related to why I am being stopped then he can not see it. The 4th amend. protects you here and prevents them from running the serial # too. I live in FL and its optional to advise. I never do. If I am asked i hand them my permit and that's it.
I disagree with handing my weapon to a police officer as it might lead to a backup officer shooting you when he thinks you are reaching for a weapon.
I think a better way to handle it is to respectfully ask for the officer to disarm you by stepping out of the vehicle. That way you never handle your fire arm in the preses of law enforcement.

There is no real "right" way to do this. There is only a wrong way. The wrong way is to surprise the officer with a gun. If you know you're going to reach for something in/near the same place as your gun, you probably want to let the cop know about your gun before your go digging around.

Without a carry permit - WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ONE? - the gun must be in plain site.
I would place my license/registration/insurance, before the officer arrives to the car, on the dash and hold the wheel, point out the gun, and ask how the officer would ask you to proceed. While a round could be in the chamber, removing the magazine wouldn't be a bad idea and pushing it to the right on the dash.

I don't think any cops around here would ever ask me to hand them my gun. Too much risk there. As long as the cop knows where it's at and can see your hands aren't reaching for it, the safest place for a gun is just where it's at.

There is no 2nd Amendment right to not allow an officer to see a gun. He may well have seen it in his holster and been ready to yell STOP if he mishandled it. he was also in the right position to move.

I would have told the cop for MY SAFETY i will NOT reach over and physically hand him my firearm. That is total BS and could easily turn bad. The cop should never ask anyone to do so. If I am legally carrying a firearm and inform the officer and it is not related to why I am being stopped then he can not see it. The 4th amend. protects you here and prevents them from running the serial # too. I live in FL and its optional to advise. I never do. If I am asked i hand them my permit and that's it.

I disagree with handing my weapon to a police officer as it might lead to a backup officer shooting you when he thinks you are reaching for a weapon.
I think a better way to handle it is to respectfully ask for the officer to disarm you by stepping out of the vehicle. That way you never handle your fire arm in the preses of law enforcement.

@jdmderick there's a lot to do prior to exiting the vehicle. Sometimes the channel is busy and you have to wait to get a chance to call the stop or if they check to make sure they aren't pulling over a felon that might try to shoot them.

There is no real "right" way to do this. There is only a wrong way. The wrong way is to surprise the officer with a gun. If you know you're going to reach for something in/near the same place as your gun, you probably want to let the cop know about your gun before your go digging around.

Without a carry permit - WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ONE? - the gun must be in plain site.
I would place my license/registration/insurance, before the officer arrives to the car, on the dash and hold the wheel, point out the gun, and ask how the officer would ask you to proceed. While a round could be in the chamber, removing the magazine wouldn't be a bad idea and pushing it to the right on the dash.

There is no 2nd Amendment right to not allow an officer to see a gun. He may well have seen it in his holster and been ready to yell STOP if he mishandled it. he was also in the right position to move.
