@arcpeter You raise a valid point. I suppose that the question should be: "Did Eisenstein make this film as a true artist, with the intent of creating a masterpiece of cinema? Or did he do it to curry favor with, and glorify, Stalin and communism?" I'm not enough of an expert on the film and on Eisenstein to answer this question. But it seems as though the character of Nevsky in the film; as well as the anti-Catholic element, seems to indicate that he wanted to do latter.
