If this were filmed today it would have been done in a green screen studio with80% of CGI to make up all the things that made this so unique, like the bombing of the ship. This movie should be a blue print on how to make a good movie. It felt so real, and kept your attention at grasped all the way through.
"Passage to Marseille" is a unique film for having so many flash-backs within flashbacks. The film opens with a newspaper correspondent visiting a Free French bomber squadron in England where Claude Raines recalls how he first met 5 of the fighting French in the squadron on a ship, La Ville de Nancy. The ship picks up 5 escapees from Devil's Island who recall their stories of escape and oath-taking, and within that story is another flashback. Truly unique!

Vastly underrated film!
The real stars of this film is the extensive use of spfx.
Back in the day before CGI we had real artists making use of their talents.
