Thank you some much for your videos. Myself and my neighbors who are backyard gardeners find them VERY useful. The MotorCity loves your tips so please keep them coming.
Just a tip: Even here in the city I got coons. Don't want'em, so what i did was I got an electric fence and went around the gardening 'bout a foot to foot and a half off the ground. Seems to help. I only use it at night. During the day I turn it off. Your this even with out rain looking good.
Something that may help with the coons in the corn, is to plant a plant that has prickly vines as a border, pumpkins, gourds cucumbers, etc. Even if you can't eat the gourds, if you grow some small ornamentals you could sell them for decoration, they make a nice centerpiece.
Yeah, some ornamentals are small enough that just placing a few per row, you could train them up and across the corn, and it wont be enough weight to hurt them.
Love all ur videos,I live up here in Maine and we still have 6 inches of snow.Too early to plant anything yet except my onions and leeks.I would like to try planting some okra.......any body out there from Maine got any tips for me.What about you BAYOU GARDENER.I would like you expertise..... Thanks
I would say plant it right after your last frost date and it should be ok. It usually takes about 2-3 months to start making. You will harvest until the first frost then it's over. The hotter the weather the more it likes it...... Donald
Electric fence worked for us. We used electric tape putting the first strand about three inches off the ground, the second strand about twelve inches from the ground and another strand about ten inches from the middle strand. You can adjust to what you want , but hope this gives you some idea. Just make sure you check it often to make sure it is not grounding anywhere. We also have a hava heart trap for coons too to maybe get them first before they check out the fence and corn.
Well, annoying music might keep them away.... But you know, the local raccoons have posted warning label's on my neighbor Sylvia's garbage cans. Perhaps you could use some of that? Hehehe, I'm so mean.
Well, the only thing I can tell yah is my dog keeps the coons out of my front garden and the back one is two lines of electric fence. But I have horses already in electric so I connected it to the pasture shocker and um set. I have no tracks even in the inside perimeter. hope you get some rain soon and I really enjoy your videos....
If I had an electric fence already up that would be the route I would go. Yesterday a friend told me to go place a battery powered radio in the corn patch every evening and let it play all night. The coons won't come back. I am seriously considering buying some rechargeable batteries and giving it a try. The only problem I have with that is choosing the music.
Thanks for the very nice update. Everything looked great except for that first corn planting. As leafy as those cucumbers were I'm surprised you haven't gotten more than 10 pounds so far. It's VERY dry here in N.C. too. Way hotter than normal and only a tenth of an inch of rain in the last 2 weeks. Watering is a must. I can see how it would be an impossible chore to get all you've got planted watered.
Once you go beyond a certain size, watering does become an issue. That's why I plant things that I'd really like to save (in a dry spell) closer to the front near my water source.
I know what you mean about corn and the racoons. They don't like feed corn too much but they sure love sweet corn. Had an electrical fence last year but it didn't help alot. If you find a solution Id love to know. thanks
The first thing that came to mine was sitting out there at night with my headlight and a full magazine. But ... that's not very practical I guess. I did think about an electric fence but that's a lot of work and expense. If I do find a way, I'll be sure let you know.
If we don't get a rain soon the garden will be in a real bind. Some of the snap beans are drying up way ahead of time. I water what I can but can't water it all. I guess it's like some other things in life "a roll of the dice"
Got to get yourself a coon dog and start hunting them coons...lol

Try RAP (Really Awful Poetry) music I am sure it will keep the coons away. But you'll have to wear earplugs while you 'TRY' to sleep. :)
