The NCAA could stop any contraversy like this from ever happen again. They can just say you can advance on ANY fumble, or you can't, making no differentiation from whether it was from a muffed kick or not.
I don't understand- what's the difference between if he muffed the punt or fumbled it? either way he touched the ball first and lost it, which on a punt should mean it's a live ball.
If it's a muff, the kicking team can only recover the ball and not advance it, the ball is dead at the the point of recovery, first down kicking team...
if it's a fumble, then the kicking team can recover the ball and advance it, in this case for a touchdown
I really do not understand what these replay officials see sometimes. This is a horrendous call. Look at some Indiana football highlights from last year, they were absolutely screwed over, and this is coming from a Purdue fan! (Purdue even got some big calls vs IU)
Muskiepk, are you watching the same video we are? In the video we watched, the returner got control of the football but got drilled. That's a fumble. Those refs must have forgotten to bring their glasses.
Well seeing as this happened the year BEFORE the "fair catch" and posted to youtube the year BEFORE the "fair catch"... I'd Say it's the Louisville fans that are the kettles
luvtoscore, that's not true. The rule states that the punt team cannot advance a muffed punt (which is what that was, he never had control of the ball). The officials made the correct call.
If the returner had had control of the punt and fumbled, then UConn could have returned it for a TD. But that's not what happened.
Ok, so you say he never had control... how long does it take to establish control then? HE CHANGED DIRECTION AND TOOK 3 STEPS WITH THE BALL BEFORE the uconn player knocked it away. That to me is establishing possession, making it a fumble not a muff
It was MAC officials that were the on the field officials during the Temple game, and there was not nearly enough video evidence to overturn that play no matter what call was made
Bullshit, those were BIG LEAST officials who made the call! The contracts for the game were signed when Temple was still in the BIG LEAST and BIG LEAST officials gave the game to that asshole Edsall. I hope UCONN chokes on themselves, because Edsall is a major league asshole.
No really, if any Huskies fan ever complains about a call from that game they are insane. Everyone in the country knows their returner and the refs stole that game from Louisville, did no one notice that everyone besides the returner was just standing there?
Ill agree that the ref "stole" that play, but no one in their right mind should say that they "stole" that GAME, we dont know what the out come of that game would have been had they flagged that play. If you throw out those 7 points, you have to throw out all the other points that happen after it as well. seeing as it occurred in the 3rd quarter it didnt "cost" Louisville the game, if it was the last play of the game, maybe you'd have an argument
True, Louisville really has no excuse for turning into just about the worst defense I have ever seen almost over night but you have to admit that that return was a huge momentum swing for UConn.
There is a bit of a difference between not giving up a touchdown and a 74 yard touchdown return. Of course it was a momentum swing, just not nearly as big.
I guess I wasnt clear as to which fumble return, I was saying that the fumble that Louisville returned for a TD after the "fair catch" could very well have been a momentum swing back in Louisville's favor. Louisville was the one that scored the next 10 points after the "fair catch" and blew that same 10 point lead in the 4th
In which case, yes, that was a momentum swing back to Louisville. And it was the Cardinals own fault for blowing the lead and ultimately losing the game.
well considering this has been posted for nearly a year I think its okay... and it goes to show its okay for louisville fans to complain about a bad call but not uconn fans... see also the blown call on the one yard line that eerily similar to this one
SANTINI35 that was clearly a punt return fumble by louisville, for a UCONN touchdown. dont see how the zebra"s or the review officals missed that one. but louisville was playing for the BCS last year and they needed shit like that to get them thru. and i bet that ticked off everybody in new england, but what goes around comes around, because what happened in louisville -UCONN this year, gave everytbody in louisville a massive breakdown.
THE right call was made, you cannot advance a muff.how many of you have a div 1 schedule? please send my way so i can watch you work! most of you havent a clue.....
you're right you cant advance a muff, but thats not why I consider it a bad call. Its a bad call because it never should have been called a muff, as the receiver gains full control of the ball and then fumbles the ball, in which case the kicking team can advance the ball.
We were so surprised to see our son's touchdown on YouTube.Thank you so much for adding him to your collecion. It made the Rockland County community proud, especially Nyack, New York people. It was very exciting. Thanks again The BMores
That would be true if it was really a muffed punt, in that it had just hit him and he never had full control of the ball. However as can be seen he has full control of the ball as he takes at least 3 steps with the ball, after which the ball is then knocked out of his possession, which should be considered a fumble and therefore separate from a muffed punt return.
You can recover and advance a "fumbled punt return", but the officials ruled it a muff. If you fumble by definition, that means that the officials ruled possession first (which this receiver did--just not ruled so by replay).

If the ball were moving in his hands than he didn't have possession, but it certainly didn't appear that way.
However, if the Huskies recovered that muffed punt, got that first and goal, and then didn't score, I guess they deserved to lose. :-P
And I live in Connecticut. LOL.

The refs on the field were corect. You cannot advance a fumbled punt return. You retain possession from the point of recovery.
