  • @ejfan First of all, the question isn't "Who did Hendrix influence more?". We were merely discussing the difference between EJ and JM. Johnson is an amazing player... agreed. Maybe one of the best to put his fingers where others have told him to. Mayer is not the better "guitarist" (by this standard) but the far better artist. When it comes down to it though... Jimi blows them both out of the water. Music isn't about how many notes or what notes your playing, but why you are playing them.

  • This performance is from the PRIMAL TWANG DVD which features incredible performances from players of all guitar styles and eras. Highly recommended. You can buy it on the Primal Twang website or Amazon. I saw a shortened version of the film recently on PBS in San Antonio and a friend saw it in Louisville.

  • Eric Johnson ain't got no soul... He's the technician... John Mayer is the artist... that's the difference...

  • @RobandTodd I totally agree. I hate it when people just base it on the whole technical thing. Look at hendrix, very unorthadox and was a genius. It doesnt matter how fast u can play or how u hold the guitar. What matters is how much heart and soul is in every note and cord you play. EJ is a technician....JM is the artist, well said bro

  • i'd love to see EJ play little wing :>

  • noooooo!!!!!! man, why the hell did you cut the video when Eric was going to play the solo. It must have been a fucking amazing experience to listen eric playing that and taking everybody to heaven. Any way, thanks for uploading part of this musical treasure.

And to Mitch all my love R.I.P. beautifull musician

  • I just saw Eric JOhnson last night in San Francisco at the Experience Hendrix show and I can tell you he fucking owns Mayer when it comes to Hendrix material. Even Mitch Mitchel got up to the mike after their set and said how wonderful of a fit he was with the songs. Thats straight from the horse's mouth right there. Mayers good, but not THAT damn good.

  • How can anyone place Mayer and Johnson on the same PLANET? Johnson is 100000x the guitar player that Mayer. I would love to see Mayer try to play Cliffs of Dover, it would be as embarrassing as his cover of Panama.

  • lmao mayer wishes he could play jimi as good as eric. i heard mayer's version today he damned near ruined my fav jimi tune

  • mayer's just another SRV copy

  • Have you even heard him play?

  • unfortunately

  • Am i the only one shouting " Oy Love... shift yer 'ead!"

  • mayer doesnt embelish the chords as much or hit the pentatonic run into the solo. He slides a bar chord

he sings it better. Id like to hear the mahavishnu cover this tune :D

  • Not even close to Mayers version.

  • mayer is good, but ej's tone is just crazy and smashes mayer into the ground, and i am for fact sure that hendrix is a much more bigger influence on ej than mayer, therefore ej executes hendrix's tone and chops. ej, in my opinion is the best. hes the man!!!!

  • Sounds mi-t-fine to me.

  • how is anyone covering hendrix going to be original? EJ sits in the same realm as any performing artist covering a hendrix tune..

  • hmmmm this was bad actually.... as always, eric doesnt sing that great and he has time problems playing those tricky lines and singing at the same time.

  • Mayer's version is pretty weak. Mayer is just an SRV/Hendrix clone anyhow, not original like EJ is.

  • EJ's solo would help when comparing this to Mayer's....

  • Eric is one of the best. Think John Mayer's version on his Continuum Album is way better.

  • I think that having this archival footage is great no matter if it's good or bad, as long as we can trace Eric's development. This is my favourite Hendrix song.

Is there a Hendrix fan out there who's seen Jimi do THIS one live? I've not heard of one. Kudos to Eric for tackling this one live, something that could usually could only be done in the studio.

  • I have live in studio (3 piece experience) but not a live in concert.

  • EXACTLY

  • yeah actually, Jimi opened up the second show at The Scene, Milwaukee, WI with the instrumental Bold as Love.

  • I would kill to see that. Mark my words.

  • not too impressive, i've seen better from him :(

  • j'ai préfère la version d'hendrix....la voix d'eric johnson et à chier et son jeu c'est mort y a aucun feeling...beurk.

  • Eric needs to turn up and shut up on this one. I'm sorry , I love him .

  • my favorite hendrix tune. I wish he does "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" too

  • Excellent! need the whole song.

  • Course it would end right when the solo begins. Great stuff anyway thanks "Tonefiend".

  • outstanding! I wish there was more, Thanks for sharing - Barry - FLA
