I am currently making an ameteur movie which you could associate with Sans Soleil and some Werner Herzog. I would say that there are people doing things like this today but the market is (and has never been) big. And it is hard to get your movies out to an audience if few appreciate it. I am struggling with this all the time so I have to do my movies alone.
