I'll give credit where credit is due. Ronson's version was one of the things that introduced me to The Smiths (the other was hearing How Soon Is Now? in the movie The Wedding Singer). Ronson's version was not only good itself, but it introduced me to what I think today is the greatest and most influential band in my life ever.
If I had to choose though, The Smiths version all the fucking way.
Look. To hell with Ronson..I'm 36 and I remember The Smiths first time around, without doubt the most important band of the 80's. Ronson's got lucky because he ripped a song off (a B-side by the way). They still play this version in indie clubs 21 years later...will people still remember Ronson in 21 years ??? I think not
Age doesn't mean anything to me, I don't go bragging about condescendingly cause people nowadays have horrible tastes in music and I listen to The Smiths. As long as they let me live my life, they can have their shitty "music" to themselves. I'm not saying I like or dislike Ronson's music because after all who am I to judge, but I do know that I prefer The Smiths 100% over Mark Ronson anyday, and if anyone ever doubts my love for The Smiths you best believe what is coming right back at them.
you for real??? mark ronson putting the song back in the spotlight???? that clown just takes other peoples songs and is that lazy gets someone else to sing it. what is the point of him. no one put the smiths back in the spotlight. the smiths kick started a lot of young people into music back in the day
but mark ronson is not a clown, and he doesnt just take other peoples songs, and he isnt that lazy that he has to get other people to sing it..he isnt a singer, so why would he, himself sing the songs..he is an amazing producer with alot of talent. cant you just get over the fact people like different versions and get on with life.
i dnt agree with anyone that says that mark ronson does nothing and gets paid for it - thats rubbish. there would also be a lot of work to be done for him to create such a different version of a song such as this one.
I love how everyone gets very brave behind their computer screens....I never knew this version exsisted until i read someone else's comment on mark ronson's page...I am glad for the helpful comments but not for all the bullshit people say to eachother on the computer, that you know they wouldn't say in person...just a thought....thanks to the guy who suggested the smiths.....
Have you ever think that if the beatles were born today their music would be mostly shit? Today's "likes" are not the same as yesterdays sucess and fame... stop writing futile comments about who's got the greatest dick... and learn to appreciate good music no matter who made it... By the way ronson version is assumed to be a cover by the artist..it's not like Led Zeppelin that credit many musics as their own while their were not...
Also ronson's version is made today, not with the limitations of the music industry of the smiths time. I'm a sound engineer and i found both versions masterpieces of their own time... They both accurately express the cultural status of their time.. and better still is quite easy to admire the changes because good music will never stop but only "catch up" with the present time. Guys!! the Smiths were great in their own time, so is mark ronson.
this version is pretty decent, but i prefer mark ronsons cos it has more punch in the bassline and the singin is genious. Dont get me wrong, this is still a great version.
how DARE mark ronson cover a smiths song. hes just asking for trouble when he covers a song written by a genius like morrissey! the mans a poet. whether people think ronsons version is better or not, i think its just sooo wrong. especially the name of the song as well, poor morrissey must feel like hes been raped by some fucking mod. im 17 and the smiths and the stone roses as well are better than anything my generation can ever produce unfortunately :( to conclude, this version is my favourite!
morrissey and marr both gave ronsons version the thumbs up - i think if anything Ronson has brought the Smiths to the attention of a younger generation which can't be a bad thing, this version of course is far superior to the remix - morrissey actually knows what he was singing about not just singing a cover - i consider him one of the greatest all time lyricists: there is a light that never goes out, suedehead, god knows i'm miserable now, everyday is like sunday etc etc etc
I guess this has already been noted but this is the video from 'I Started Something I Couldn't Finish' not 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before' amazing song anyway though
"Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" was still released as a single in other countries, but its promotional video - which featured Morrissey plus a large number of Morrissey lookalikes - was used in the UK to promote "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish".
This version is the best. I heard ronson's cover first but this is miles better. Also in this one I can see the humour and the complexity of the lyrics. I can't in Ronson's
und auf deutsch: ich find das orginal von den smiths irgendwie total lieblos und müde also ich weiss auch nich. Mark Roson hat aus diesem Lied was echt tolles gemacht!!!!

The original here is very fitting for the time period. It's cool, but I do prefer the Mark Ronson/Daniel Merriweather version better. The beat is crazy and Daniels voice is so sexy and soulful.

love this song so much that i have to listen to it 10 times every morning when i wake up, even lerned how to play it on the guitar! morrissey is god, ave
Lol yeah I really get a picture of your intelect with the way you overstretch that "so". I love it when people say things like "its better because its better". This is comparable to "at least on the new version the guy can actually sing" because its just a claim with no backing or decent arguement. This is of course because the guy dousn't know why he likes the other guy better, because of course when you feed somebody shit long enough they are bound to start enjoying it.
mate its a just a damn song! i dont kno why ppl get such big dicks up their arses for a damn song!! its not gonna change the damn world so shut ur mouth. fool!
ur a fool captain pie pants. go on get on with ur life. this all started when u decided to write a bloody long comment thinkin u can outsmart me because u cant find anyone else to annoy.
LOL! I called you stupid but if thats what u think outsmarting somebody is then ok. Ohh and yes I go around finding people to annoy, assumption is the best method to destroy your own credibility. Ohh and if you do respond to this then you will be hypocritical, so just warning you.
Morrissey is pretty.

THE MARK RONSON VERSION IS SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!!! at least on the new version the guy can actually sing.
jam88jam 4 years ago
Lol yeah I really get a picture of your intelect with the way you overstretch that "so". I love it when people say things like "its better because its better". This is comparable to "at least on the new version the guy can actually sing" because its just a claim with no backing or decent arguement. This is of course because the guy dousn't know why he likes the other guy better, because of course when you feed somebody shit long enough they are bound to start enjoying it.

ur a fool captain pie pants. go on get on with ur life. this all started when u decided to write a bloody long comment thinkin u can outsmart me because u cant find anyone else to annoy.
jam88jam 4 years ago
LOL! I called you stupid but if thats what u think outsmarting somebody is then ok. Ohh and yes I go around finding people to annoy, assumption is the best method to destroy your own credibility. Ohh and if you do respond to this then you will be hypocritical, so just warning you.

Jesus christ theres some idiots on here.Smiths first, Mark Ronson later. Its pretty obvious.

One of my favourite`s smiths song ever!So pure and fresh melody! In my opinion Strangeways... are one of the best album ever! I won`t share you!
konemusa 4 years ago
I'm guessing it was a joke. Even if you don't know the Smiths there's an obvious difference between a video from the 80s and a video now.
Love this song but the cover's alright.

sacowea!
PPneX 4 years ago
You do realize this a song by The Smiths. Mark Ronson was the one who did the cover, albeit a crap one.
songbeneaththesong 4 years ago
But Mark Ronson did it first!
dowling1981 4 years ago
aweonao.... are you stupid???? (dowling1981)
PPneX 4 years ago
No. He did not. He did a cover of this song. The song itself is an ORIGINAL by The Smiths, NOT Mark Ronson.
