Mangini may be SLIGHTLY better than portnoy technically, but they are still in the upper most of the top tier as 2 of the best drummers in the world. Honestly, as much as I have a man crush on Portnoy, there's something about Mangini's vibe and style that to me, almost fits better. Especially live. He's absolutely amazing.

I just remember him sounded less fluid than some of the other drummers when auditioning. Which is why I was actually disappointed that Virgil didn't get the job.

You are all getting the idea wrong. They always play an improvisation on that section of the song. Because LaBrie enters at the wrong time, they have to miss that part. That's why Portnoy get "pissed off" and played that solo at the end.

@arroyomusic The problem was actually that Jordan Ruddess didn't play the keyboards part so it sounded empty, and Mike yelled at him "hey" so he could realize it was his fuck up and he started playing it, James sounded more like a parrot than like a good singer but... oh well there's not much they can do about that haha

Krisiun and Nile excuse presentations, though only Cryptopsy's 3 first long can be considered brutal, and as to Job For A Cowboy, only Doom would count so and even select songs, try listening to Entombment of a Machine or Knee Deep. Considering the fact that "brutal death metal" is not a solid but rather representative genre, you can pick which songs fit into it. In my opinion, I consider ingesting worms while performing to be brutal, if anything.

There's a number of other qualities that should be weighted before labeling songs (bands can never be labelled, musically speaking). Qualities those could be the musicality, technique, tempo etc. If one can't consider Nile brutal death metal, for instance, than I simply don't know what can be, for they bind power, speed, technique and musicianship, as well as the darkly scales inherent to the style.

@tasfa10 Besides, the brutal label can be very personal since it's a label, not an actual musical style. I've known people to consider Slayer being brutal, or Cannibal Corpse. Or even underground bands such as Cerebral Incubation, which plays too gory a death metal, Infector, Bedwelming, Annihilation, Exterminatorium etc. Favorites are Nile, Krisiun, Vader, Dying Fetus and Decapitated but I know more of them calling themselves brutal, instead of just death metal. As I've seen some not being so.
