i know that he also thinks that when you're able to download an artist discography as easy as it is today, its easy to dissmiss it quickly and just be done with it by removing it. he talks about this in the 18 min of insurgentes u got with the limited Edition of insurgentes
I think SW's hate of iPods is silly. I understand he doesn't like the fact that MP3's are starting to replace records/albums/CDs/vinyl, but let's be realistic. Not everyone wants to listen to one album at a time, and carrying/switching CDs is a pain in the arse. I still buy CD's, but I also have an iPod. That doesn't make anyone a poseur or anything.
As for the music, great cover. The guitar work could have been a little cleaner, but not every recording can be perfect. Your tone is spot on too.
A big problem SW has with the Ipod is the dramatic loss of sound quality that Mp3s and other lossy encoders provide. On a nice audio system, between mp3s and a well mastered CD, the difference is night and day. Mp3s sound like crap in general, but most people can't tell the difference. SW can.
I think that's bollocks. MP3's are as good as however good the producer makes them. To a point, MP3's have a limit, but the difference between a mastered MP3 on a CD or whathaveyou is barely noticeable, by ANYONE, unless you're comparing it to say a 5.1 Surround Sound mix. I don't care who you are. Saying that MP3's sound like crap compared to a CD or anything is a crock.
Producers don't produce mp3s in their songs. The mp3 is compressed by the user or seller of mp3s. The final production of a CD is several .wav files exported to a compact disc. This is why wav files are identical in quality to CDs. If you listened to an mp3 vs a CD on a high fidelity system, then you'd know what I'm saying. But since most of us don't have HiFi equipment for audio enjoyment, you're right, we can't really tell the different between a high bit rate mp3 and the original CD.
Ugh, I can't believe I even give a shit. But SW has an "old school" sensibility toward music. It's a culture. A feeling that derives from packaging; from staring that the artwork of King Crimson albums for years on end. It's an entire aesthetic, and yes, the sampled rate is important when it comes to digitally transcribed music. Truncated waveforms and all that... But christ, he's an ancient fukk innit? :D
It's not about the iPods. It's about the idea of this disposable music culture where kiddies, instead of instead of appreciating an album as a whole, will just go on limewire and download one song off an album. It's the "jukebox" mentality that goes against his musical vision, not an electronic device.
Aye ^^, which is why I found it funny / ironic that it was sitting there. iPods have become ubiquitous with download culture. SW destroys many of them in the documentary portion of Insurgentes
To be fair, I too have an iPod (bought in August) but only carry and listen to complete albums. I also have a collection of over 150 retail CDs (not a lot, but probably quite a few more than Average Joe nowadays.
Before I bought my iPod, I carried around a case of 96 CDs and my discman wherever I went.
did u get the delux edition that came out in November? I got it the day before thanksgiving. I'm amazed at how few people know about the delux edition on youtube.

i learned abt PT through Opeth and dled some songs off limewire. Thats how i become a neutral to a big fan today.
That being said, mp3 quality does suck in general, understandable that SW hates them, i have my PT albums in FLAC only.

Loved your tone. You've got a good ear. I like playing the chorus with all down strokes sometimes.

Nice guitar work. Though...
What would SW think of the iPod on the desk? Sure hope that's placed there for irony's sake.. if not it's kind of missing the point of Insurgentes.
nicksanford9 3 years ago
or maybe it's placed there because he can't carry around a record player and a collection of vinyls?

Said electronic device is just a symbol.
