I actually did notice the disproportionate ethnic distribution amongst the prison population.

Statistically, minorities commit more crimes. But is this because they're genetically wired to, or because the majority assumes them be, and create a self-fulfilling prophecy? Had I been denied all honest work because of racial prejudice, I'd probably be dealing drugs. Before long, I'd be in prison, and reinforcing racist opinions by strengthening the ethnic crime statistics.

You need to remember that some also end up in jail because they choose to take that route, regardless of people trying to help them or not.
