The Smugness coming from the panelist with the blue striped cardigan is off the scale. She actually believes she is oppressed. How utterly ridiculous. Women today (n the west) have far more opportunities than men.
It always amuses me that these types never ever come out in support for oppressed women all over the world suffering under a brutal religion. Of course they are frightened to criticise one religion in particular. Cowards? Yes, for sure. Hypocrites, absolutely.
This was my favourite panel discussion at the conference. Rebecca Watson's response to Paula Kirby was just one big hipocritical straw man argument. She reacted like a spoilt child who didn't get the bicycle she wanted for christmas.
Two criticisms for Paula Kirby .. your dismissal of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's contribution as not up there with the four ("four horsemen" they're known as)..umwhat? I'd like to hear more about why exactly you thinks Ayaan's contribution is not quite up there..and wrt your comments regarding grassroots activism, and how you responded to question from the woman who asked about the pressure to go along with religious traditions in schools .. I think your response was inadequate, bordering on dismissive.
In hindsight, I realise that science contributed much to my understanding of the world throughout my life, but like Paula, my interest in science was consciously piqued after I realised I'm an atheist and started reading on that topic as it relates to science.
Second speaker ... I didn't catch your name ... I smiled at your evaluation of male and female tendencies ... I admit to having that female tendency as both a wife/mother, and as an admin of the forum I co-established (rationalia) ... I actually resigned as admin >because< I felt my tendency to try to run things smoothly was getting in the way of allowing a more fluid evolutionary dynamic.
And I think Richard Dawkin's response to Rebecca Watson's petty agenda is all the more understandable, given Paula Kirby's second point regarding how the shackles of religion affect women, and her concern about liberating them.
I love everyone of these women. This is truly what humanism and atheism is about. We are human beings trying to bring humaneness to the human race. And these four women emulate that whole idea. Thank goodness for this video.
the fourth panelist's speech was perfect. her advice applies to any kind of volunteerism.

Is it just me, or is Bobbie Kirkhart AC Grayling's female twin?
