while i can see how this song might have been the "germ" from which "about a girl" by nirvana grew, you can see how Kurt takes the song somewhere distinctly his own and different adding on many other qualities that just seem to make "about a girl" really "click" into a great pop song. It would be a gross overstatement that Kurt stole it.
