I do agree that bird hunting has to be sustainable.. but when foreigners come trample on our land and try to mess with the hunters in their own land then that is definitely not right and wont work that much apart from creating conflict.. there must be another way to stop this, i'm just not sure how

@joystickmm . The freezers are not Bidlifes, they are at the museum. Each bird in the freezer has a MEPA tag attached to it that identifies its origins. The contents of the freezers were confiscated from hunters and taxidermists by the authorities. All are accounted for and cannot be used in publicity stunts to fool the public. Almost all dead or injured birds found in the countryside have been shot by poachers.

it is not only illegal hunting you want to stop. You want to abolish all hunting, you want to stop spring hunting for quail and turtledove when it is almost the only time we maltese have a chance of practising this sport. After all what is all this fuss about? Inmany european contries you serve finches and other small birds as apetizers and you do nothing about it
Not only does spring hunting make no sense in conservation terms, it makes no sense in hunting terms. Shooting your quarry species during its breeding season has a devastating effect on its population numbers. A ban on spring hunting should enable better "sport" in autumn. Tougher legislation also needs to be used to control the European restaurant trade regarding the serving of Ortolans.
Why dont you speak the thruth? There is rarely a good migration in autumn. Real hunters who do not shoot raptors would prefer autumn as a close season. Raptors are mostly the migrating birds in autumn and a couple of doves and quail. Cabs want autumn as an open season so that hunters would be tempted to shoot raptors and they could get them on video in order to make a lot of fuss and get hunters in the bad side. we were promised spring hunting b4 joining eu and the ppl voted 4 it so that is it
Turtle Dove have 1 to 3 broods (average 2) per season with 1 to 2 eggs (av 1.5) per brood. For every pair that successfully passes over Malta in spring, five birds will return in autumn providing none are predated, hunted or die of drought or from other causes.. (2 broods x 1.5 chicks) + the 2 parents = 5. Therefore, killing 2 birds in Spring is like killing 5 in Autumn. Allowing birds to breed will result in bigger numbers in autumn. Spring hunting makes NO sense even in hunting terms.
@TheBaldIbis gO HOME AND LEAVE US ALONE GO CHECK ON YOUR COUINTRIES ABORTIONS AND ALL THE ILEGALITES THERE!!!!!!!!! HUNTING IN SPRING AGAIN UP YOUR ASSSSSSSS BYE BYE GO HOME
Hey, I'm from Halifax (UK) but my mum's Maltese and we go to Malta every year. The Maltese Islands are beautiful and have some great wildlife. And the people are so friendly. However, this hunting is a huge shame - I don't understand the need to hunt, but I know some people feel it as a tradition. However, these people are shooting the magnificent birds that don't even stop for long - why?
Sure hunting has its place in the world but the senseless shooting of raptors and herons is totally idiotic. hunting in africa has led to conservation and an increase in specie counts but no one here would dream of shooting raptors .There is no point. those Maltese doing so are stupid idiots
Cut The crap i have caught some videos from you tthat are manipulated stop these lies. and secondly what would happen to me if i enter you property and do what i like in it with oput permission
You dont have any permission to enter private properties. How come you find the birds with out knowing anything espesialy in some of your videos. Haha you make me sick.

i could do that too. but th problem is ppl like CABS and BIRDLIFE make hunters and trappers hate them, i cant risky son getting shot can i? that would end up in a big slaughter, just not on birds... anyways i respect ur opinion and u should respect mine. end of subject.
You are right, since hunting has been around since life began it should stay but you should start using a cart with a horse to go to work because that was a very old tradition as well. Grow Up stupid hunter!
this is all Shit your country kills more animals not only birds like bulls in italy the pigs deers etc in malta only birds that come from other parts of europe and also why can 't we go trapping country like spain is legal and also the children are thought to catch these birds
@TheBaldIbis. as i can see you live in the UK right? Well if you have enough knowledge on your country there are loads of illegal hunting in there so try get up your country reputation about hunting and then come here to Malta to save guard the birds of prey! Be advised you you might have to carry your coffin with you in your country cause your people have the balls to shoot you.
Sorry, Baldibis, I beg to differ. There is extensive networking between Birdlife and Cabs. There is extensive lobbying between Birdlife and CABS. There is extensive communication between Birdlife top executives and CABS. Real birds of a feather!! Your text about this video is a rehash of the same inaccutate, inflammatory, provocative and downright untrue garbage. EVEN CABS ADMITTED THAT THE REALITY TODAY VERY DIFFERENT!!! See their latest press release if you don't believe me.,
"CABS is firmly committed to putting an end to the killing and trapping of migrant birds on Malta. We aim to achieve this through our migrant bird protection camps, education programmes and protest campaigns, as well as our support for our local partner organisations"
There it is...black on white and taken from CABS' website. Since we can only shoot migratory game birds CABS and Birdlife are effectively lobbying to have ALL hunting banned. Stop insulting our intelligence, will you?
Drewsome, that statement does indeed appear on the CABS website, but it does not imply that Birdlife holds the same viewpoint. The statement cannot be applied to all birdwatchers and conservationists. In the same way, not all hunters can be considered as poachers of protected species.
The only thing I can conclude from this debate is that the Maltese hunters think that because someone else does something illegal, then it's OK for them to do it....a pretty selfish attitude. You will want to get away with murder next. At the rate you lot are killing birds and making no provision to replace them, the only birds you will have to shoot are the stuffed ones on your shelf. Try giving a little to the environment instead of always taking. You know who the poachers are, you stop them.
The full length documentary is an observational piece from the viewpoint of visiting birdwatchers and it illustrates what they experienced and their reactions to the situation. Some of those birdwatchers paraphrase the views of those hunters that they met who would not themselves go on camera. Within the documentary Birdlife clearly state that they are not following an abolishionist policy and the CABS viewpoint is not represented at all.
I'm glad that we agree that shooting protected species should be condemned, and also that such a statement now appears on the FKNK website. Whether or not the people engaged in these activities are in the minority, the effect that they can have on the populations of rare species is absolutely devastating. And yes, this is happening in other countries as well.
So why is your video completely one-sided? Didn't it occur to you that, as in anything else, there is ALWAYS another side to the story? Did you even other to inform yourself of the reality, or, as I suspect, have you simply swallowed Birdlife/CABS's abolitionist agenda and regurgitated it??? Where are the thousands of shot protected species? Where are the MILLIONS you lot claim migrate over Malta? What "Central Migratory Flyway"......apart from the Sicily/Tunisia one 150KM AWAY?
Badly Biased Bullshit. One sided sensationalist propoganda, exaggerating and amplifying what are, in the context of Malta and other EU countries, a minority of condemnible incidents.
No-one is saying that only the Maltese damage the environment. and I haven't seen any data on ilegal oil dumping. As for trawling, I am currently researching the damage that the fishing industry is doing but this is a huge global issue that is not confined to the UK and concerns ships sailing under flags of convenience all around the world. The UK fishing industry is a fraction of what it once was due to over-fishing and international fleets continue to ignore the warnings of conservationists.
Baldlbis never heard of illegal dumping of oil in the sea round UK? Seagulls go down for fish and what they find is the spilled oil. Or no fish at all because of your selfishness of trawl fishing.
So it is only maltese that are doing damage to the environment?
you do grow birds and livestock, but in small cages, no freedom at all.and then you just shoot them.
Why dont you say that hunting in UK is worse than malta because you invite other to come and hunt in your country just for money...
Tough i'm a hunter i must say that i agree with much of what you wrote on previous comments. You mentioned the real threats for birds, and i hope action is taken immediately. We should agree on one thing ,to have more birds around,so we both can enjoy them in different ways, with also sustainble hunting included.Spring hunting in Malta for turtle dove and quails is sustainble....
go home you ass holes.you are the people whu make us fight with each other you are the people whu make us protest and you are those people members of another country telling me not to shoot bird when god gave us birds to eat.why dont you tell your own people and leave malta alone at wonce.
Many of the people who are making a stand for conservation, or who seek changes in the way that hunting is curently carried out, are Maltese nationals or people who live and work in Malta and many recognise the value of the work being carried out by international conservationists. Legitimate, law-abiding hunters should also recognise the importance of the work these people do.
Only 150 birds where seen in the first week of april. loool. and the media says that malta is popular for all those birds that migrate over it? what birds?
i dont see any reason why these morons have to come hand in hand with any maltese traitors to piss hunters off.
I don't know the source of your information, but if the numbers of birds coming through has fallen significantly, then this is all the more reason to put strict conservation measures in place. Failing to do so would result in no birds and thus, no hunting at all.
BIASED, BULLSHIT and BOLLOCKS is a far better title.. The most one-sided piece of stale, outdated rubbish to date, full of the usual exaggerations and accusations.
Listen Hitler morons... this is our country. and in our country we hunt as you do... so fu** off... if you hunt, we also retain that right. Nice boycot birlies... You are influencing others with untrue things. In malta, compared with other EU countries, a small number of protected birds are shot.
Remember, it is illegal to take pictures of people without permission, so make sure to report immediately to the police if anyone takes photos without your permission. VIVA MALTA U VIVA IL-KACCATURI.
But you don't hunt as we do, that's the problem. In the UK, gamekeepers rather than hunters target protected species and they are prosecuted if they are caught. Nowhere in the UK, outside of a museum, will you find huge taxidermy collections. The UK shooting community observe a closed season in spring for their quarry species and special licenses are only issued for problem species in spring and only after non-lethal control methods have failed.
TheBaldlbis, in UK their is a larger problem. THEY HUNT JUST FOR THE SAKE OF MONEY. they make adverts for hunters to book hunting trips, something that in Malta we dont do. Taking pictures of people without their concern is illegal. In the UK millions of birds are shot or poisoned with fertilizers. And what do you say to all that oil that is released to the sea? It makes a lot of damage to the birds wings. In malta we dont have taxidermy museums, so i dont know what you are talking about....
On estates pheasant and partridge are bred for shooting puposes. On Grouse moors the habitat is managed by the keepers with shooting only taking place if there are enough birds. Shooting organisations such as the GCT and BASC engage in conservation of species such as Black Grouse. On estates the main problem is gamekeepers killing protected birds of prey. Poisoning due to agriculture is quite rare and habitat loss or change in farming practice are bigger threats. What oil released into the sea?
let us compare the number of protected birds that are killed in malta and with that of the UK. Poisoning due to agriculture happens often and dont try to lie. Anticept are released with plains on the large fields, and the birds remain in their nest to protect their eggs, ending up dead. And their are thousands of killing in this manner and are not reported. Tankers release oil in the sea round Britain and brids like seagulls damange their wings and are not able to fly once they touch the oil.
Loss of hedgerows destroys the habitat where they find food and shelter. Pesticides that were detrimental to birds of prey have been banned and replaced with, arguably, less harmful products. That isn't to say birds are never poisoned, but other factors are having a greater effect. Many are in trouble due to changes in farming, in planting times, in types of crops, loss of hedgerows, pesticides, loss of haymeadows, climatic conditions here and on migration, desertification in Africa
The Royal Commision on Environmental Pollution has been investigating current practice in the use of pesticides and weedkillers and is expected to be pushing for changes in current legislation.
DDT and its derivatives were banned in the 1970s, though still used in some parts of the world. The newer pesticides are supposed to break down quickly in sunlight rendering them harmless quite quickly. Birds are more likely to starve rather than get poisoned.
Tankers releasing oil?? I don't know where you're getting this info from. If you're referring to them flushing out their holds I have seen no proof of this occurring. It would be ilegal for any captain to do so and I suspect that, if it occurs at all, it would happen far out at sea in international waters where no-one would notice. If you are talking about tankers running aground, this is an international problem that is becoming rarer due to improved tanker design.
In the South Pennines we are actively trying to redress habitat loss by encouraging farmers to plant haymeadows and hedgerows. We don't have much arable farming here, it's primarily livestock such as sheep and cattle, but over the years many of our haymeadows have reverted to improved pasture and what few hedgerows we have, have been neglected. In this area, it is these factors, habitat loss, and what is happening along the migration routes that are of primary concern.
This reply is for THEBALDLBIS : IF i were you i wont mension america even as a joke lol about hunting......you dont need no rednecks running after ur ass and for most important in america u dont run after people in thier own land/property with out a warrant they will shoot at you eveybody got a firearm behind their doors remember what the second amendment states "right to keep and bear arms"
Conservationists from all over the world are concerned about the ilegal hunting, mainly from European countries such as Italy, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Poland, The Netherlands, etc. etc.,, but also Israel and America and, more importantly, from Malta.
I would still class Malta as part of that system and studies are on-going to see just how important Malta and the prevailing weather conditions are for migration through Italy, Sicily and Tunisia. Yep, Israel is pretty good for birds using the Rift Valley system and up the Arava.
Beg your pardon, but the Central Mediterranean Flyway is over Tunisia, not Malta. Birds like Raptors migrate on a broad front, yes, but given the length of the Mediterranean we see comparatively small numbers. Try Israel for birdwatching - 500 MILLION birds twice yearly.....mela hawn!
Central European Flyway can be regarded as N. Italy - Corsica - Sardinia - Tunisia in the west, Italy - Sicily - Tunisia in the centre and Italy - Sicily - Malta - Libya in the East
So we beg to differ on this one. The scientific community regard Malta as being at the eastern extent of the flyway. One of the main pre-occupations of the volunteers attending the Birdlife camps is to record the number and species of birds passing through during migration. The more data that is recorded, the more accurate the picture becomes and that information will be of real value to consrvationists and hunters alike.
There is no reason why legitimate, sustainable hunting should not continue provided that it is conducted in a civilised manner and properly regulated with due regard given to the wishes of the rest of the Maltese population and consideration given to the conservation of protected species and legitimate quarry species.
What a shame. These killers are an national emabrrasment to the decent people of Malta. The sooner the people decide they have had enough of this shit, the sooner it will end.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg! THAT is where REAL slaughter goes on, as well as Germany, the UK and France. In Malta we have no resident game birds - lack of habitat, lack of open spaces, lack of water - and a pretty poor migration most years, as we are 150km away from the nearest flyway.
But then, these countries are never bad-mouthed and smeared as we are.....why not? The scale is HUGE compared to us.
Perhaps Malta receives more attention than other countries because of the amount of hunting that takes place in such a smal area. There has, however, been recent press on incidents in Germany, Italy, Cyprus and Greece.
RE lack of habitat. Several thousand trees were trashed at Foresta 2000, oil was dumped on one nature reserve and another NR was set alight by persons unknown. On the last point, the Central European Flyway goes right over Malta.
When something wrong goes in Malta ,it's 'always the hunters'Typical sensationalism!!As far as i know hunters were at the fore front to promote tree planting in Malta, and conserve natural habitats...
On arrival at the scene it was evident that the poachers had just shot some 180 Meadow Pipits, 20 Collared Doves and 20 Teal and Garganey. The dead birds were seized and 2 shotguns, hundreds of cartridges as well as two illegal electronic bird lures were impounded. The two men will be prosecuted.
Brescia is a poaching hot spot in Italy. In addition to poaching with traps and nets and the shooting of protected species cases of shooting in the close season are not uncommon"
BUT WHY it's ONLY and ALWAYS Malta on illegal hunting??As if illegal hunting happens exclusively in Malta! After all clearly the reality is that maltese hunters have the leastest and minimums of bagged birds; from any other hunter in the world....
Illegal hunting activities are reported in the press from many EU countries and other parts of the world. I have seen programs made on poaching in the UK, Italy, S. Africa, Kenya, Congo, S. America & USA.
Drewsome01- Glad to see legitimate hunters condemning the poachers. See previous reply to Nadur70 RE not wanting to blame all hunters for actions of poachers. This is about conservation and is not about pushing an anti-hunting agenda.
Got a better title for you, BaldIbis.....how about calling it "Bullshit, Bollocks and Boring"?
The same negative comments trying to blame thousands of law-abiding hunters for the actions of an absolute minority. The same smearing of Malta all over the Web just to further your abolitionist agenda........and when other EU countries have a far far worse record. By all means let's get the poachers. But stop the blanket accusations!
And public land should be kept public for the benefit of the 380,000 people that live in Malta, and for the benefit of visiting tourists. It isn't there for people to cover in ilegal hunting hides. Nor should hunting be carried out on nature reserves.
I found Sunday afternoons to be relatively quiet also. I agree that many hides are on legally owned land but it is very difficult to assertain those that are legal and those that are not. Some people claim to have been confronted on land that they believed to be public so this issue needs some means of clarification to avoid such conflicts in the future
nadur 70, this is a trailer for a documentary which, hopefully, does not show all Maltese hunters in the same negative light. It is very easy for illegal poaching to occur under the smokescreen of legitimate hunting and it is in the interests of the bona fide hunter to condemn those within their ranks who shoot protected species and to honour a close season on legitimate quarry species. The effect that these criminals are having is devastaing and reflects on the hunting community as a whole.
You are only showing one side in this video. The same propoganda against the maltese hunters. You cannot blame all the maltese hunters for those handful who disrespect the law.

they should confiscate all shotguns on malta .theres no real justification for shotguns there very few game birds so they shoot anything that flies over on passage .all the birds are protected by law in europe conservation bodies are spending thousands of pounds protecting raptors in europe to protect and increase the numbers of raptors then the maltese are shooting hobbies harriers and buzzards that we have worked hard to protect something needs to be done to stop the slaughter

Inmany european contries you serve finches and other small birds as apetizers and you do nothing about it
veghawker40 2 years ago
Not only does spring hunting make no sense in conservation terms, it makes no sense in hunting terms. Shooting your quarry species during its breeding season has a devastating effect on its population numbers. A ban on spring hunting should enable better "sport" in autumn. Tougher legislation also needs to be used to control the European restaurant trade regarding the serving of Ortolans.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago 5
Why dont you speak the thruth? There is rarely a good migration in autumn. Real hunters who do not shoot raptors would prefer autumn as a close season. Raptors are mostly the migrating birds in autumn and a couple of doves and quail. Cabs want autumn as an open season so that hunters would be tempted to shoot raptors and they could get them on video in order to make a lot of fuss and get hunters in the bad side. we were promised spring hunting b4 joining eu and the ppl voted 4 it so that is it
veghawker40 2 years ago
Turtle Dove have 1 to 3 broods (average 2) per season with 1 to 2 eggs (av 1.5) per brood. For every pair that successfully passes over Malta in spring, five birds will return in autumn providing none are predated, hunted or die of drought or from other causes.. (2 broods x 1.5 chicks) + the 2 parents = 5. Therefore, killing 2 birds in Spring is like killing 5 in Autumn. Allowing birds to breed will result in bigger numbers in autumn. Spring hunting makes NO sense even in hunting terms.

However, these people are shooting the magnificent birds that don't even stop for long - why?
toffeeeagle92 2 years ago 8

Sorry, Baldibis, I beg to differ. There is extensive networking between Birdlife and Cabs. There is extensive lobbying between Birdlife and CABS. There is extensive communication between Birdlife top executives and CABS. Real birds of a feather!! Your text about this video is a rehash of the same inaccutate, inflammatory, provocative and downright untrue garbage. EVEN CABS ADMITTED THAT THE REALITY TODAY VERY DIFFERENT!!! See their latest press release if you don't believe me.,
drewsome01 2 years ago
"CABS is firmly committed to putting an end to the killing and trapping of migrant birds on Malta. We aim to achieve this through our migrant bird protection camps, education programmes and protest campaigns, as well as our support for our local partner organisations"
There it is...black on white and taken from CABS' website. Since we can only shoot migratory game birds CABS and Birdlife are effectively lobbying to have ALL hunting banned. Stop insulting our intelligence, will you?
drewsome01 2 years ago
Drewsome, that statement does indeed appear on the CABS website, but it does not imply that Birdlife holds the same viewpoint. The statement cannot be applied to all birdwatchers and conservationists. In the same way, not all hunters can be considered as poachers of protected species.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
You might not like hunters from malta but it is our culture why don't you stop the killing of the bbulls in Spain?
emptyshellprod 2 years ago 2
The only thing I can conclude from this debate is that the Maltese hunters think that because someone else does something illegal, then it's OK for them to do it....a pretty selfish attitude. You will want to get away with murder next. At the rate you lot are killing birds and making no provision to replace them, the only birds you will have to shoot are the stuffed ones on your shelf. Try giving a little to the environment instead of always taking. You know who the poachers are, you stop them.
drogoBROADBAND 2 years ago 3
The full length documentary is an observational piece from the viewpoint of visiting birdwatchers and it illustrates what they experienced and their reactions to the situation. Some of those birdwatchers paraphrase the views of those hunters that they met who would not themselves go on camera. Within the documentary Birdlife clearly state that they are not following an abolishionist policy and the CABS viewpoint is not represented at all.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
I'm glad that we agree that shooting protected species should be condemned, and also that such a statement now appears on the FKNK website. Whether or not the people engaged in these activities are in the minority, the effect that they can have on the populations of rare species is absolutely devastating. And yes, this is happening in other countries as well.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
So why is your video completely one-sided? Didn't it occur to you that, as in anything else, there is ALWAYS another side to the story? Did you even other to inform yourself of the reality, or, as I suspect, have you simply swallowed Birdlife/CABS's abolitionist agenda and regurgitated it??? Where are the thousands of shot protected species? Where are the MILLIONS you lot claim migrate over Malta? What "Central Migratory Flyway"......apart from the Sicily/Tunisia one 150KM AWAY?
drewsome01 2 years ago
Badly Biased Bullshit. One sided sensationalist propoganda, exaggerating and amplifying what are, in the context of Malta and other EU countries, a minority of condemnible incidents.
drewsome01 2 years ago
No-one is saying that only the Maltese damage the environment. and I haven't seen any data on ilegal oil dumping. As for trawling, I am currently researching the damage that the fishing industry is doing but this is a huge global issue that is not confined to the UK and concerns ships sailing under flags of convenience all around the world. The UK fishing industry is a fraction of what it once was due to over-fishing and international fleets continue to ignore the warnings of conservationists.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
Baldlbis never heard of illegal dumping of oil in the sea round UK? Seagulls go down for fish and what they find is the spilled oil. Or no fish at all because of your selfishness of trawl fishing.
So it is only maltese that are doing damage to the environment?
you do grow birds and livestock, but in small cages, no freedom at all.and then you just shoot them.
Why dont you say that hunting in UK is worse than malta because you invite other to come and hunt in your country just for money...

TheBaldIbis 2 years ago

Only 150 birds where seen in the first week of april. loool. and the media says that malta is popular for all those birds that migrate over it? what birds?
i dont see any reason why these morons have to come hand in hand with any maltese traitors to piss hunters off.
dragularoy 2 years ago
I don't know the source of your information, but if the numbers of birds coming through has fallen significantly, then this is all the more reason to put strict conservation measures in place. Failing to do so would result in no birds and thus, no hunting at all.

Remember, it is illegal to take pictures of people without permission, so make sure to report immediately to the police if anyone takes photos without your permission. VIVA MALTA U VIVA IL-KACCATURI.
dragularoy 2 years ago
But you don't hunt as we do, that's the problem. In the UK, gamekeepers rather than hunters target protected species and they are prosecuted if they are caught. Nowhere in the UK, outside of a museum, will you find huge taxidermy collections. The UK shooting community observe a closed season in spring for their quarry species and special licenses are only issued for problem species in spring and only after non-lethal control methods have failed.
Taking pictures in public places is not ilegal
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
TheBaldlbis, in UK their is a larger problem. THEY HUNT JUST FOR THE SAKE OF MONEY. they make adverts for hunters to book hunting trips, something that in Malta we dont do. Taking pictures of people without their concern is illegal. In the UK millions of birds are shot or poisoned with fertilizers. And what do you say to all that oil that is released to the sea? It makes a lot of damage to the birds wings. In malta we dont have taxidermy museums, so i dont know what you are talking about....
dragularoy 2 years ago
On estates pheasant and partridge are bred for shooting puposes. On Grouse moors the habitat is managed by the keepers with shooting only taking place if there are enough birds. Shooting organisations such as the GCT and BASC engage in conservation of species such as Black Grouse. On estates the main problem is gamekeepers killing protected birds of prey. Poisoning due to agriculture is quite rare and habitat loss or change in farming practice are bigger threats. What oil released into the sea?
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
let us compare the number of protected birds that are killed in malta and with that of the UK. Poisoning due to agriculture happens often and dont try to lie. Anticept are released with plains on the large fields, and the birds remain in their nest to protect their eggs, ending up dead. And their are thousands of killing in this manner and are not reported. Tankers release oil in the sea round Britain and brids like seagulls damange their wings and are not able to fly once they touch the oil.
dragularoy 2 years ago
Loss of hedgerows destroys the habitat where they find food and shelter. Pesticides that were detrimental to birds of prey have been banned and replaced with, arguably, less harmful products. That isn't to say birds are never poisoned, but other factors are having a greater effect. Many are in trouble due to changes in farming, in planting times, in types of crops, loss of hedgerows, pesticides, loss of haymeadows, climatic conditions here and on migration, desertification in Africa
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
The Royal Commision on Environmental Pollution has been investigating current practice in the use of pesticides and weedkillers and is expected to be pushing for changes in current legislation.
DDT and its derivatives were banned in the 1970s, though still used in some parts of the world. The newer pesticides are supposed to break down quickly in sunlight rendering them harmless quite quickly. Birds are more likely to starve rather than get poisoned.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
Tankers releasing oil?? I don't know where you're getting this info from. If you're referring to them flushing out their holds I have seen no proof of this occurring. It would be ilegal for any captain to do so and I suspect that, if it occurs at all, it would happen far out at sea in international waters where no-one would notice. If you are talking about tankers running aground, this is an international problem that is becoming rarer due to improved tanker design.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
In the South Pennines we are actively trying to redress habitat loss by encouraging farmers to plant haymeadows and hedgerows. We don't have much arable farming here, it's primarily livestock such as sheep and cattle, but over the years many of our haymeadows have reverted to improved pasture and what few hedgerows we have, have been neglected. In this area, it is these factors, habitat loss, and what is happening along the migration routes that are of primary concern.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago

Otherwise each and everyone of us who has ever eaten a hamburger, a steak or even a piece of ham could be considered a killer.
That is just environmental extremism.
rancid2008 2 years ago
Conservationists from all over the world are concerned about the ilegal hunting, mainly from European countries such as Italy, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Poland, The Netherlands, etc. etc.,, but also Israel and America and, more importantly, from Malta.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
I would still class Malta as part of that system and studies are on-going to see just how important Malta and the prevailing weather conditions are for migration through Italy, Sicily and Tunisia. Yep, Israel is pretty good for birds using the Rift Valley system and up the Arava.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
Beg your pardon, but the Central Mediterranean Flyway is over Tunisia, not Malta. Birds like Raptors migrate on a broad front, yes, but given the length of the Mediterranean we see comparatively small numbers. Try Israel for birdwatching - 500 MILLION birds twice yearly.....mela hawn!
drewsome01 2 years ago
Central European Flyway can be regarded as N. Italy - Corsica - Sardinia - Tunisia in the west, Italy - Sicily - Tunisia in the centre and Italy - Sicily - Malta - Libya in the East
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
That's half the damn Mediterranean Sea! COME ON! What on earth are you saying?
THE CENTRAL HIGHWAY IS OVER TUNISIA-SICILY. 150KM AWAY FROM MALTA!!!!
drewsome01 2 years ago
So we beg to differ on this one. The scientific community regard Malta as being at the eastern extent of the flyway. One of the main pre-occupations of the volunteers attending the Birdlife camps is to record the number and species of birds passing through during migration. The more data that is recorded, the more accurate the picture becomes and that information will be of real value to consrvationists and hunters alike.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
There is no reason why legitimate, sustainable hunting should not continue provided that it is conducted in a civilised manner and properly regulated with due regard given to the wishes of the rest of the Maltese population and consideration given to the conservation of protected species and legitimate quarry species.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
What a shame. These killers are an national emabrrasment to the decent people of Malta. The sooner the people decide they have had enough of this shit, the sooner it will end.
2efnbad 2 years ago
(Pls refer to previous comment)
And this is just the tip of the iceberg! THAT is where REAL slaughter goes on, as well as Germany, the UK and France. In Malta we have no resident game birds - lack of habitat, lack of open spaces, lack of water - and a pretty poor migration most years, as we are 150km away from the nearest flyway.
But then, these countries are never bad-mouthed and smeared as we are.....why not? The scale is HUGE compared to us.
drewsome01 2 years ago
Perhaps Malta receives more attention than other countries because of the amount of hunting that takes place in such a smal area. There has, however, been recent press on incidents in Germany, Italy, Cyprus and Greece.
RE lack of habitat. Several thousand trees were trashed at Foresta 2000, oil was dumped on one nature reserve and another NR was set alight by persons unknown. On the last point, the Central European Flyway goes right over Malta.

Brescia is a poaching hot spot in Italy. In addition to poaching with traps and nets and the shooting of protected species cases of shooting in the close season are not uncommon"

And public land should be kept public for the benefit of the 380,000 people that live in Malta, and for the benefit of visiting tourists. It isn't there for people to cover in ilegal hunting hides. Nor should hunting be carried out on nature reserves.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
Nobody ever stopped me from taking a walk on a Sunday afternoon with my family. No one. And I went week after week, year after year.
If someone ever does then I'll agree with you, but until then I'll remain of the opinion that hunters occupy their own (legally purchased) land.
Do you have any evidence to substantiate your claims, Lands documents perhaps?
rancid2008 2 years ago
I found Sunday afternoons to be relatively quiet also. I agree that many hides are on legally owned land but it is very difficult to assertain those that are legal and those that are not. Some people claim to have been confronted on land that they believed to be public so this issue needs some means of clarification to avoid such conflicts in the future
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
nadur 70, this is a trailer for a documentary which, hopefully, does not show all Maltese hunters in the same negative light.
TheBaldIbis 2 years ago
You are only showing one side in this video. The same propoganda against the maltese hunters. You cannot blame all the maltese hunters for those handful who disrespect the law.

Online up-to date information from Malta (courtesy BirdLife Malta)
As migration begins over Malta illegal trappers and hunters ignore the
spring hunting (and permanent EU) trapping ban. The first shot birds are
being reported (more later) and local conservationists and the Malta
anti-poaching unit ALE have their hands full with illegal trapping. The
first nets have been confiscated with a number of trappers taking to
