The only reference I could find about china retaliating for viet nam attack on another country is when viet nam invading combodia to stop and remove the khmer rouge(chinese backed government) from massacring anymore people. Even though north vietnam, combodia and china suppose to be allies, china encouraged khmer rouge to kill ethnic vietnamese in cambodia and display aggression to the north.

china has always been aggressive because they want to expand and own everything. majority of the chinese wars are wars for dominance. the only real war for unification is during the qin dynasty. all the other wars were to take/steal back the land they once occupied. satellites is just a term used to label countries who are part of a group or faction. like the USSR and their satellites.
