I saw them in Peterborough for the last time around 83/4. we walked into the bar before the show and there they were having a beer. we must have looked gone out, and ray jackson looks over and says 'alright lads?'. close to their audience or what?
alan hull, I think, was one of the most underrated singer-composer-writers this country ever produced.
Anyone remember Cardiff College of Food Technology about 1969. Lindisfarne, What a night. Alan Hull autographed the album Nicely out of Tune for me. I Quote him! ' May your pockets ever jingle with Newcastle Brown Tops' Bless you Alan and Lindisfarne
Brilliant, but sadly a few short months later and Alan was gone...however i do have my memories of god knows how many gigs by band members and solo including Bob Dylan at St James's park, a great idol of mine supported by our home grown heroes, for me it was Lindisfarnes show as much as Bobs.
alan hull singing to his own people, i honestly cant think that any other band ever will ever generate anything close to the magic of the lindisfarne shows, it was a joy to be part of, rip alan
@bordeauxjake Naturally I prefer Runrig but I remember seeing (and photographing Lindisfarne) at Edinburgh Playhouse. I was supremely-disappointed that they hadn't played Clear White Light. But they saved it to an encore when I was wondering what the funny boxes at the back of the stage were - photofloods, that near-blinded me when this sonfg started!
My first ever concert was a Lindisfarne concert, when i was 7 or 8, at Portsmouth Guildhall. I didn't really appreciate it, i just went cos my dad loved them and i wanted to join in and see what all the fuss was about.
Listening to this now, and 'Fog on the Tyne' and also ' Lady Eleanor', i have to say, i should have appreciated it more! not that i'll ever admit it to my dad, but hey - it reminds me of my childhood!
First heard "Fog on the Tyne" in '72 on an "underground" station here in Chicago at about 2:00AM and never looked back. Brilliant is an understatement....
Saw them at Chelsea village Bournemouth 1978 Chris Rea support, few people turned up...didn't deter this band they were Brilliant ..best party I've ever been to..
Just dragged out my Lindisfarne Songbook. Looking the worse for wear after 37 years and still stained where the cat pissed on it in 74. She's Long gone and so is Alan but the songs still shine. Time to murder them again. Salutations to all who are enjoying this great band.
Never been to Newcastle but this Band is Incredible,I'm a fan for 35 years give or take, from Ireland an always love this magic music,Rock on th Geordies.
This brings back some many great memories and goosebumps. Christmas concerts at the City Hall just fantastic. Never enjoyed any concerts better than this, cheers Lads!!!
My parents were at this concert and when it was played over the radio they taped it, unfortunately the tape is now chewed and gone, does anyone know where I can find more of this concert in video or audio?
Met 4 geordie lads here in London at a wedding a few weeks ago. What great lads with an amazing sense of humour and we talked about this band. Not many bands to match them.
Thetrack of Lindisfarne. Even now when it plays it gets everyone up and singing along. Well done boys. Newcastle for one are extremely grateful and proud
Christmas concerts at the City Hall were the highlight of the year. The place erupted every year as "meet me on the corner" kicked the concert off. Everybody knew the words and danced like mad buggers toevry song. Great memories.
As a London boy I admit gladly that this was one of the best live bands ever seen. I have had the great pleasure of seeing them live twice in the 70's.I am still very sad that Alan Hull has gone but I still listen to the music almost daily. T.J. Essex
@finickity i do the same.im a proper geordie and these are legends.its nice to know that someone from the south actually likes some of our famous faces.theres more like alan shearer, alan robson for metro radio, bobby thompson as a comedian....
@finickity At prep school I was in the same class as Simon Cowe and Rod Clements. Three years later I went to another school where I was in the same class as Ray Laidlaw. Sting was a couple of years below us. Ray has remained a good friend for almost fifty years now and helped me during a difficult time ten years ago. They're a great bunch of lads. Glad you enjoy their music.
This band used to make the city hall bounce to it's foundations - fantastic atmosphere every single time - everyone went home hoarse from singing every word at the top of their voices.
As for the Mags, I was 13 years old and I went to the front of the stage proudly wearing my SAFC shirt. I got a few good natured boo's but everyone was top class.
Alan Hull/North East - the greatest people in the world
