  • er bestaat geen betere drummer dan sandy nelson

  • This was one of the finest percussion pieces ever played in my opinion. In 1964 I bought this when I first started on the drums and practiced from it. Sandy could make the skins speak volumes.

  • Sandy Nelson-Gene Krupa-----the only drummers that could make the drums talk.NO better drummers ,past present or in the future will ever be.

  • Fabulous atmospheric drumming - Ive got this 60s vinyl in an attic somewhere gathering dust - but so good to relive it here in A1 quality (mine is scratched to pieces)

  • Fabulous atmospheric drumming

  • This is great stuff.

  • My dad used to play this at night when i was a child... I always scared the crap out of me and my sister! Of course Sancy Nelson Is one of my favorite drummers now!

  • This is awesome ... used to have it on an LP and haven't heard it in years.

  • One of the best drummers ever.I used to imitate his style, way back when..

  • sandy nelson gene krupa i used to put on a spool tape machine put head phones on and listern the i played along on my drums i lernt from them and i could play band music has well has rock onceyou got beat man thats great but i hate what i call bands that cant play instruments i can also play classical has any one heard him play the clapping song on drums

  • sandy nelson gene krupa i used to put on a spool tape machine put head phones on and listern the i played along on my drums i lernt from them and i could play band music has well has rock onceyou got beat man thats great but i hate what i call bands that cant play instruments i can also play classical

  • I've still got the Vinyl.

  • @Catagator Me too! Have 3 of his LP'S. Back before stereo.

  • Takes me back to my childhood. Parent's collection of 45's would be taken out & listened to during bad weather, we pretty much wore this one out.

  • I much prefer Sandy's control of the beat to the frantic drum solos that came later. This for me is how the rock 'n roll sound should be heard.

  • I remember playing cut in 'MUSIC CLASS" in high school. Catholic school. The nun was amazed at the fluid motion sound. I think everyone enjoyed it.

  • In 1963 Sandy was involved in a vehicular accident and lost part of his leg. He recovered and returned to performing the following year, and eventually released Teen Beat '65 before fading away.

  • krupa couldnt touch sandy nelson he had the rythem

  • Sandy is # 1, Krupa # 2.......this song is a bit freaky.......A TRUE drummer! Thanks sandy!!!

  • Sandy is still going strong

  • for DoctorplutoOf1812. In1963 Sandy was in a Motorcycle accident and lost a foot and part of his leg. He continued to play through the 1980's. Last performance that I can remember was in 1986!! You can take this to the Bank!!

  • My brother had this album in the sixties and i would listen to it all the time. I was 8 years old and I've never forgotten it. True brilliance

  • Most Drummers who started playing in the early sixties have much to thank Sandy for :-)

  • A few people were wondering here in the comments what kind of drums these are in the photo here of Sandy..........These are a set of LUDWIG SUPER CLASSIC'S with a 22inch bass drum and a Chrome "LUDWIG SNARE 400 SERIES".......also the exact Drums and Silver Sparkle that "JOE MORELLO" used in the Sixties

  • Amen clockman47 - you got it right

  • I have all his album and he is the best

  • great recording, upload, wish there was a overhead film of this avent!!

  • Wow Great drumming!! can anyone tell what drum brand of drums and drumheads he used to get that sound?

  • Just how cool can one drummer be!!

  • His cuts sound like drummer lessons. You could probably learn drums if just imitated this cut until you got it.

  • My brother had this record back in the 60s, and my favorite thing to do was to play this song at 16rpm

  • @rollickhooper LOL I used to do the same thing.

  • Sandy Nelson = Win of the epic variety.

  • Sandy is still alive and well in the Las Vegas area and still plays drums. Lost part of his right foot, but he is still active. Has his own private radio station KPOOP and occasionally plays piano at the Boulder Dam Hotel. GREAT GUY - funnier than all get out!! He knows ALL of the licks!!

  • I have enjoyed this for decades. I wanted to be a drummer.

  • anyone else hear inspiration for black sabbaths opening title track here?....truly pioneering stuff...

ps..who does that drumming on the inland revenue adverts gotta be one those guys, krupa ,bellson, nelson et al...

  • This is my favorite, Just saw a Great Video here

    "Keith Moon Drum Solo"

  • Like Gene Krupa, Sandy had a melodic approach to drumming. And you can hear echoes of his stuff cropping up in John Bonham's drum riffs - the tambourine on the hi hat being one. He'd been playing the drums professionally for years and was only 23 when he did this.

  • Double wow, lol, I'd forgotten how good this is (and long)!!

  • too cool

  • Best drummer that ever has been or ever will be.

  • @clockman47 I like Sandy Nelson, but the best drummer that ever was or will be? Elvin Jones, Ginger Baker, Benny Benjamin, Keith Moon, and quite a few others would give you quite an argument there . . .

  • This man is the BEST drummer I have ever heard....he is the best of the best...

  • Priceless...Not many can do this today nevermind then..

  • Look at that set on the pic!!! That's a set of frickin' drums. Old school heads and all. Nothing sounds as good!!!

  • @Raughwe That's all there was and he used 'em for all they were worth. A very talented artist!

  • @Raughwe It was not just the old school heads. One reason he was able to get the drums to sound that way was because he often times played ProMark Oak sticks. I read that in an interview he gave years ago. I tried them, and learned they give a more flesh on the bones sound than hickory. For what its worth... thought you would like to know that.

  • my dads excited bout hearing this again xD

  • I remember this record!! Too cool!

  • Buddy Rich is excellent but this guy is the best..in my opinion. RWB

  • Just read some of the other comments here. I like Sandy Nelson and Mel Taylor of the Ventures the best because they play my kind of drums. But the best drummer ever... Buddy Rich. Don't believe it, do a search on him on YouTube, relax and be amazed.

  • One of the first albums I ever bought. Birth of the Beat.

  • Maybe the best cut off of an album ever

  • This guy is so good he sounds like three drummers all at once. RWB

  • Great guy Great Drummer his track is fabuluos

  • I rememebr Sandy, but as I recall, he had some type accident about 1963 and lost both his hands. Never drummer again. sad. I liked Let There be Drums, and all the others...

  • No it was his right foot and part of his leg that sadly had to be taken off.If

But that didn't stop him.he still active.

He released new recordings of old songs as last as 2008 .

  • You are wrong there.....Sandy is going strong

  • @DoctorplutoOf1812

Near the end of 1963, Nelson was in a motorcycle accident. The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg

  • @DoctorplutoOf1812 it's a leg not a hand. He's alive and play

  • @DoctorplutoOf1812 Not sure if they are still here, but a local kid in the town where Sandy Nelson lives did several interviews with him and Sandy told a bunch of great stories. It was fasinating

  • @DoctorplutoOf1812 As I watch this video, to the right appears a couple of videos from a youtube user called "danieltrujillo". These are fairly recent videos of Sandy in his home. One is about 7 minutes long. Kind of an interview. Anyway, you'll see that he has both hands.

  • @DoctorplutoOf1812 Noooooo that was his leg. Moulty from the Barbarians had a hook. He was a great drummer though : )

  • @DoctorplutoOf1812 Nah, lost a right foot and part of his right leg. Still performs.

  • I loved this beat in 1963 and I still do....the "best" drummer ever

  • Always loved this record (have it on LP). I always figured that if a Neanderthal man played rock 'n roll, the beginning of this track is what it would have sounded like... until the saber-tooth tiger ate him at 1:50...

  • The guy is amazing,,,RWB

  • This Dudes.......is the best it will ever get...Sandy is the king of all kings.

  • Thanks to the poster of this stunning bit of drumming. Love it all.

  • WOW! This is very cool!! A drummer here in Austin named Mike Molina raves about this guy all the time. This is the first time I have heard him and I am digging it!!!

  • All I can tell you...is Sandy Nelson is the BEST drummer ever....No one can match him

  • Dad bought me 2 Sandy Nelson Albums and a snare drum when I was a kid, I've loved Sandy's Drumming since I was 7yrs old ~8^)

    TDM

  • Loved this back in '64 or '65, would love to download it! Can't find this version anywhere.

  • HES WAS N STILL IS THE BEST DRUMMER

  • genemz well said. so true.

  • I can remember drumming to Sandy Nelson Since teenbeat and I still play drumms in my 60's

  • The best, Sandy...this was the first album I bought back in the day! Its GREAT drumming!

  • Sandy pounded a storming beat - it was the most amazing sound I ever heard as a nipper. His were the first discs I ever got my little fingers on (when my older bro wasn't about!) ☺

  • Sandy Nelson was one of the few drum kings of getting "the sound." He knew how to get his drums to sound natural. Organic. The way he played it seemed like its the way drums should always sound. Drummers today may play like machine guns, or get theoretically perfect sound. But? Sandy Nelson's feel and sound leaves the technocrats still looking for their souls.

  • @genemz Agree with you 110%!! Great comment!! I don't care how fast a drummer can play....it's the sound and the groove for me and Sandy nails it!! He is the most under-rated rock and roll drummer ever!!

  • This is the best drummer ever

  • Almost sounds like Pink Floyd used the riff of this on their track, Money, from Dark Side of the Moon.

  • I too have been waiting for this one. I had the album ages ago, but when I returned from the Navy it was gone. I used to play this in my band in '66. I would just totally get into the moment playing this. Sandy Nelson is the best!

  • The Best ever. It is almost impossible to find on CD now. I was lucky and got Two Copies when This was released on CD with the long version of BOTB.

  • the best drummer ever. this is my favorite. have been waiting ages for it to be posted. thank you coconutguardian!!!

  • Oh, way back, I first heard this at a dude ranch. The place was called Jack & Jill's Dude Ranch in Michigan. I must have been around 30 years old. They used to attract 350 people a week. Probably 80 per cent girls, 18 to 30 years old.

  • Sandy ..you are the best drummer recorded....

  • Prolly my fav of Sandy's, thanks for the post, it's too cool!

  • bloody brilliant! they dont make them like this anymore. Ive still got the LP in the attic.Hope its worth something.

  • If it in good condition it is worth alot.
