  • I feel like Dave is almost flat. Maybe... a just slightly smaller mouthpiece would ease the uneasiness in my ear. I love his tone either way, as he's my favorite trumpeter, but I definitely feel like a slightly smaller mouthpiece could be used. Then again, I use a small Schilke for everything, so that would explain my uneasiness.

  • Rojas sounds great on here! Not the instrument I would necessarily have chosen for the gig, but that big rotary valve tuba has a nice smooth tonal quality. French Horn guy, (sorry I don't know his name) is a great choice for this group, nice legit technique, but not TOO legit : ) It's always impressive to hear powerful musicians, who could easily play 100 times as many notes, restraining themselves and presenting their art using a different musical vocabulary. Bravo Dave Douglas!

  • lick starting at 1:59 rocks my socks... ...what an inappropriate location to be playing dixieland... ...No further comments.

  • 9:28 dave douglas boss mode

  • olocos de mais ameeeei

  • Genial =)

  • Lester Bowie R.I.P.

  • ima buy a trumpet

  • poor bob, his desk must have been drenched with spit after this

  • @2:40 just kills me, every time.

  • cmon who disliked this?

  • freaking pro!!!!!!!!! First song's the best i think. Love these guys.

  • Best musicians to ever pass by Bob's desk.

  • bad asses

  • Quit whining and just listen.

  • This i a great song and if you know music like I do then you will get the feel of this song...and to everyone who says "oh it could be better with guitar or even some syntheseizer," you're wrong, it's smooth slow bluesy music and it's not supposed to be exciting just completely chill and laid back

  • Nice!

  • not a big fan of the drum rolls at the beginning. sounds really buzzy :/

  • wat

  • haha my uncle dave douglas rockin the ray bans oh yeah

  • who can tell me what's the first song's name?

  • spirit moves is the title of the 1st song. pay attention to the video. it is indicated.

  • DubbyBongRips is just another moron the world doesn´t need!!!!

This is great music and talent, don´t come here and judge techniques, just enjoy and feel, that´s music final target.

  • Your appreciation of Chris Botti if probably part of the reason you find it difficult to enjoy a player/composer like Dave Douglas. This man has done so much to move jazz forward, while incorporating modern composition techniques, along with some classical/20th century composition techniques, all the while being true and faithful to the legacy of jazz. It's great to hear a player this good and mature doing something like this Brass Ecstasy Band, and do it extremely well.

  • Fresh and fun.......enjoyed the candid presentation.

  • vidno amerikanskoe 4justvo jumora X_X debili nahuj

  • RUSTY TROMBONE!

  • good stuff these guys know how to play their instruments

  • we are playing a piece like this but more exciting and much more up-beat for jazz marching band at my school... ^_^

  • npr is an arm of the state

  • you're all poopyheads

this isn't a gathering of people (mostly(

it is a gathering of "the have's "

this band needs some homeless people

  • I caught Dave live at The Jazz Bakery in LA a couple years ago. I went because my friend Donnie McCaslin was holding down the tenor sax chair.

Dave just killed it that night. What a player. This is just one genre- check out his straight ahead playing. Man oh Man oh Man.

  • I was there, man. What a killer show.

  • Having read the posts to this point so far, I am confident to find this absurd, yet still a small pin prick into the bubble of reality. From enlightened musical commentary, to instrument-speak like "trombone mouthpieces", to calling someone a douche, jabs at misspellers stuck between the "I" and "Y" of Wynton.

    The folk song of Democracy!

  • Wow, one of you needs to grow a pair and end this flame war. Be the bigger person. You respond, you lose.

  • Hey everyone. Thanks for the comments, positive and otherwise.

For those interested, this group released a studio record, Spirit Moves, and 2 live sets from their record release shows this past June.

Check it out here at greenleafmusic com.

  • Also, plenty more videos at our youtube page.

  • can anyone enjoy the music? =.=

  • I never said what my political view was Einstein. You are merely inferring what my political view is. Therefore judging me yet once more. Maybe you should read the other comments who state the same thing. Sure, Bruce can say what he wants. He can afford a following drop. Can these guys? You may want to think about that.

  • Comment removed

  • So you are a living contradiction. "I'm not judging", "I'm judging"... make up your mind ! LOL until then, I'll be talking to an adult. SEE YA !! LOL

  • Hello check out my yt channel.

  • un plomo

  • Hello check out my yt channel.

  • They were good! I will say the trumpet was trying waaay too hard.

  • That's a spinoff from Winton Marsallis and his weird mouthpieces. They just want some of the action.

  • You mean Wynton Marsalis?

Get a life people. Go shed or something other than babbling on about who's got the bigger, judgmental YouTube ego.

  • You mean the people who think differently than you need to get a life? LOL I think you were quite harsh on petie. So he misspelled a name? so what?

  • It's not that he spelled anything wrong that makes me so upset. It's that people sit on here all day long and say this and that and judge people about innumerable things. Notice that I haven't actually expressed my opinion about the playing in this video (or anything about the video for that matter). The only thing I want is for you to back up your comments with something like knowledge....or videos of your own. You obviously think that your opinion is the "right" one....so prove it.

  • Then maybe you shouldn't be on here judging people because they misspelled a name, or never heard of someone before.

Of COURSE I think my opinion is right, otherwise I wouldn't HAVE ONE. Who in the history of the world thinks their opinion is wrong? Maybe I'll use your quote "that's absurd".

  • Comment removed

  • "Chiapet456,

You are absurd. 'I've never heard of these guys before.'".... nope.. no judgement there. I'm absurd simply because I've never heard of someone before... Have you ever heard of the name Tom Burbage? No? Then you must be absurd.

  • You obviously need to take a mere elementary english class my friend. There's a thing called "Fact vs Opinion". Facts, are documented and proven items of knowledge like "The Earth is round". Opinions, however items that people feel, whether right or wrong like "You look pretty today". Being that this is a comment board would lead to the fact that everyone on here is expressing their OPINION, therefore don't NEED to prove their thoughts. If you can't handle that, you shouldn't be here.

  • the earth is not round. it is somewhat oblong being a larger diamater at the equator then at the poles. this is because the earths rotation throws a centrifugal force on the circumfrence of the earth around the equator much more then it does at the poles.

  • that's an odd mouth piece for the trombone...

  • no chia, I have extreme doubt your thirteen year old is better.

  • Hey saints - I've never heard of these guys before, however, I can only judge them on what I heard in this video. As for the trumpet - there are some areas where his improv didn't even fit the style of the song, making him sound worse than he probably is. Even improv needs to fit the style of a song. There are areas where he big bands a improv in a slow, New Orleans style. doesn't fit. As far as what I heard, yes, my 13 yo is actually better. As far as the band, they need to play together.

  • What made it even 10x worse was when the trumpet opened his mouth and took a political side. He obviously has no stage presence, otherwise he would know to keep his political views to himself. No matter what people think, there's always someone out there who thinks diferently. Any fans they made from this video, they can kiss a percentage of them goodbye.

  • Chiapet456,

You are absurd. "I've never heard of these guys before." For starters, the trombone player is the solo chair in the Vanguard Orchestra...one of the longest tenured and most killin' groups in NYC today. Post some videos of your 13-year-old, and let the rest of the world decide who is better.

  • That's great he is the solo chair in the Vanguard Orchestra...jpy... but to call me absurd just because I've never heard of him... that's what's absurd.

  • To judge his playing abilities, this ensemble's choice of music, and by all means the collective improvisatory abilities of a group takes some confidence that I doubt your abilities or whatever abilities your 13-year-old possesses might be able to back up. Like I said....post some videos of you and your 13-year-old playing some sweet, up-tempo, perfectly styled music, and let the rest of us decide.

  • If they keep making political statements, then their paycheck won't be carrying much weight! LOL

  • ya I'm a middle school french horn player and even I think its too sluggish

  • btw chia I wouldent smack talk about a disciple of horace silver. And even if degrees or prestige seem pompous to you, they do carry real world weight and your paycheck, so I doubt you could compete with this guy. I humbly say the same about myself.

  • just have an upright bass, a tenor sax, a piano and a drum kit...... and as for chiapet personally i partially agree with you, this time I believe they had a slightly mediocre run as working together as a band, but remember the fact this is a really slow and honestly dead piece even with improv so you are probably scrutinizing their technique due to the fact this is so liad back but nonetheless bland. Good players, mediocre chart.

  • meghh. These guys are defenitely musically acclimated players, but this score is WAYYYYY too sludgy and dry for me. I get the described feel of it. I think It would be cool if they formed a different version of a jazz combo and did john coltraines "moments notice." or dexter gordon's "cheesecake".

  • Ok, I dig brass! This sounds really good.

  • I didn't know that Denzel played the french horn

  • that trombone mouthpiece may be one of the new gold plated monnette saprano mouthpieces designed not too long ago but hey im just guessing

  • thats a funky mouthpeice for the trombone, how dose it work out?

  • I'm gonna guess its working out great for him.

  • They played it very nice. I never able to do it.

  • Hey guys I'm making a cool vid series using music I made and movie footage to tell stories please come check it out if you have a chance

  • Who the fuck is this ? O.o

  • the trumpet players' ray bans are sick.

  • what kind of trombone mouthpiece is that

  • I think its like gold or sumtin! I dont know though, lol

  • excelente esa acoplacion de vientos muy buenos una chimba unos dueros mas qe buenos

  • Thank you professor. I happen to think they sound fine. Sort of a louisiana-creole sort kind of deal. I bet you spend more time listening to recordings of stuff you played in hgh school band, and I bet its been a long time since you have played live yourself. But go right ahead and spew out a few musical terms that you've heard which don't even apply to the style that these guys are demonstrating. You suck.

  • this love note is directed to douchebag chiapet456. BTW

  • I'm a professional musician myself, and I agree with you, Ramrod. This is such a freeform thing and a great piece! Throwing standard music terms at it is a silly and pointless thing to do.

  • You should post a video of this child, unless you were throwing out an empty criticism. In that case, my 2 yr old can criticize people more maturely than you. See what I did there.

  • Actually, it was a typo and I couldn't go back and change it... I meant to type my 13 year old child, and yes he is better.

  • Just add a 1 to mine too then.

  • Apparently you think I'm just throwing musical terms around shows me that you yourself don't know what they mean. I don't care what style it's in, you have to play in tune with your group. If you can't hear that, then you are deaf. That's my opinion, no matter how much you tell me what to think. Music is all about interpretation, and my interpretation is that they need to listen to each other and actually play as a group.

  • Really excellent concert!

    Gaby.

  • i agree with siegfriedhorner here. i mean, they aren't that great at improv. i mean, i know not everyone is a jj johnson or miles davis. they were ok. the head tune is pretty cool though

  • I gotta say, this is the first time I've heard, or seen for that matter, a french horn in a brass group like this, and I like it!

  • YouTube is unfair and geo-centric. They actually zone videos, and videos not in the "in" zone are not given any chance to be viewed. It is a type of "racism"..... hhmmmm let me see........ geocism.

  • Come on guys, I know the space isn't great, and it was impromptu, but intonation, ensemble, and the improvisation. I'm sure you've had better days. But thanks for your efforts.

  • plz send me the url to the sheet music of this song ill lyk to play it in a school concert

  • haha the french horns solo looks lyk he popped a nut

  • trombone sounds kick brass lots of solos but the trumpet needs to work on his improv

  • yeah yeah

  • sounds bad.

  • bad as in good?

  • I wolcome yourself being able to sound better, but until then you haven't any say in matters of quality...fail

  • Hannah and Cody LOVE you.. our umbrella remix video is funny btw

  • muy bueno

  • Jesus, these guys kick brass.

  • Trumpet needs to learn how to clean up improv, or at least that's what this sounded like, if it wasn't, oh my..

  • w00t constructive criticism!

  • "cleaning up" improv is contradictory.

  • nice work

  • I am a bass player but I DO love brass man, I love music

  • you guys are awesome if you really work on that you be playing pro.

  • haha are you kidding me...thats dave douglas...hes one of the most badass modern jazz trumpet players around...he gets more gigs than most i'm pretty sure hes "playing pro"...do some research dude

  • Sweet i play trumpet too in band at school

  • toca muy bien el de la trompeta

  • Looks like a Christian Lindberg mouthpiece on the trombone, btw.

  • what soul, i felt it.

  • Man, I love the trombonist's mouthpiece, looks like one of those 1920's era Conicals... I'm stuck using a Shlike 51D. Also, he holds the slide rather oddly.

  • I hold my slide the same way, around here they call it the Vulcan Grip XD

  • Wonder what brand mouthpiece Luis Bonilla is playing on. That's an interesting looking mouthpiece.

  • hey i played the trombone in band thru highschool. its a instrument that takes talent to learn how to play, it was funny tho, we had some sayings, like were boners or we do it in 7 positions

  • Yea! Go Vincent Chancey!

  • wow amazing

  • YEEAH! I play trombone myself, and love to see what other players have come up with to enjoy thier instrument. Nice, nice NICE! You can tell these guys are totally digging the sound.

  • Whoa, I play trombone, too! Go boners!

    :D

  • Boners? xD

isnt that like a stiff penis? :-p

  • I love dave douglas. what a great man.

  • You are all extremly talented musicians You all remind me of Louis Armstrong.

  • nagger

  • Incredible video...what strange comments this page has though... Thanks, glad to see a high quality video of this great band playing... Congrats Dave Douglas on winning the downbeat poll yet again for trumpet of the year! Marcas Rojas is killin' on the low end...funky tuba!

  • Wow this Douglas can really play the brass! Search, "Silver Spring Team 3" to check out another cool you tube video!

  • my comment below was to jmbsc2. and i was talking about using the "n" word and how it isnt appropriate...just to keep things clear haha

  • "n" word? what are u meaning with that? when i said nigger i didn t ment in a racist term of course. only in dirty minds

  • I enjoyed the first one but didnt care for any of the others.

  • alright bro...this isnt the 50s....niggers isnt really appropriate any more.

  • it is inappropriate if you arent black... say it in front the wrong crowd & you will be the next perez

  • tht was unnecesary... you get no laughs & it wasnt even funny.. better luck next time

  • stfu idiot

  • ;_;

  • niggers is not appropriate? u want me to say color people? is it fashion now for u? i made my point with that, dont change the subject.

  • oh myyy...he is just kickin it on that trumpet :)

  • Great stuff! Dave simply makes great music.

To the poster making the comment about impressing talent scouts: Learn who Dave Douglas is first before you comment. Everyone in this group is a world class musician. This is an impromptu gig for NPR. They don't need "talent scouts". And the Canadian Brass are classical players, not jazz.

  • i would learn trombone!!!

  • Marvelous

  • wow!!!! can you play the cumbanchero??? thanks for sharing

  • i like the trombones mouthpiece

  • Custom Greg Black mouthpiece. Rim copied from New York Bach 11C but much larger back bore and cup depth. Thanks for checking it out

  • Ahh so awesome! beautiful statistically and musically, in every way!

  • yes i know

  • fain:D

  • check out dirty dozen brass band

  • dwer4f4fd4d

  • i lake intrumens

  • Good playing can hear that but its just not my taste of music
