@66SiK we assumed it was a big pike, but we watched 2 ducks, male and female swimming together. giant splash and the male was gone...... the only thing big and nasty enough to do that in the lake was a pike, so i assume that was it.

I am sure ducklings are a staple diet for pike and big bass in just about all ponds and lakes across north america. the pike was waiting near the shore for something to eat and it came.. the duckling screwed up by straying from the group and then its mother, easy, lonely target. the pike was like, "yay, breakfast is here.."

I have seen a Herring Gulls take a duckling like that.

This gives the pike a bad name, but without them you simply do not have a healthy water. There will be far too many small fish, and not enough food for them all.

I used to fish the canals outside Glasgow in summer. If you were quiet nearly the entire length of the canals would have jack pike bathing in the sunlight behind cover. Massive network of canals = massive pike.

Just beautiful to watch them treading water in the clear water at the surface.

Voracious predators and easy to catch. A spinner will do it everytime flung along deep water and just edging some pond lily where they usually hide.

Even a small one will fight well above its weight.
