I'm not so sure that the U.S. doesn't have many choices as far as metal bands, I just think metal isn't as mainstream here as it is in Europe - so what we have here really isn't promoted as well and that's why it might feel like a smaller scene.
I think this is why it's a treat for the U.S. when bands like Opeth, Enslaved, Lacuna Coil or Watain come here too - you're getting a small taste of a bigger European scene.
besides Slipknot and Gwar American kids don't get much exposure to shock value in music, so I can understand why we'd be more receptive to black metal.

Dark Funeral are unique... Watain, i can compare to other bands tbh, like more oldschool roots. Dark funeral however are pushing in new directions, very much like dimmu did with Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia. Obviously completely different styles, but i'm just pointing out they are treading on un troden pathways...
I just realized that bands such as Dark Funeral (which I think is a good band) are poseurs when compared to bands like Watain. This guy really knows what he is doing and does it with a purpose.

@AnthemsToTheWelkin i kind of agree with you. i am in a u.s. black metal band and we truly were terrible when we first began writing music, but we have taken a great amount of influence from bands like watain and our music is just as good as european black metal. being born somewhere else does not make you different

@dustmiter567 How about instead of taking influenece from one of our great european bands, you take the influence from the dark energies within your soul and try and create a U.S black metal band that doesnt sound exactly like Darkthrone(like the other 4000 U.S black metal bands) my only exceptions Xasthur and Leviathan which rarely get respect over here.

Bands like Havohej, Profanatica, and Krieg all rape the current Euro scene. I guess those bands aren't true though, because they don't sell band-name belt buckles over the internet. What a laughable state of pettiness black metal is in.

Dark Funeral are unique... Watain, i can compare to other bands tbh, like more oldschool roots. Dark funeral however are pushing in new directions, very much like dimmu did with Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia. Obviously completely different styles, but i'm just pointing out they are treading on un troden pathways...
