the whole few minutes in the middle jerry'os solo is like droplets of rain all falling into a small pond in a lil secluded bamboo area with stone carvings
And Deadheads wonder why they are routinely derided. C'mon, folks. Gotta have some standards.
I actually think this version of Peggy O is really, really weak. The mix-up at 5:45 is a quintessential Dead brownout and Jerry's reaction is priceless -- seriously, I'm not sure I've ever seen footage of any of the band members making a face as sour as Jerry's in response to a sour note, and I've seen a lot of footage including a lot of sour notes...
@herbbirdsfoot can't understand how anyone could say this is a weak version of this song. this is the definitive version for me, and a flawless jerry solo. forget phil's one wrong note.

@mlynn02 9-18-74 leaps immediately to mind. Englishtown 77. That's off the top of my head. I'm sure there's many more. It's not about the "wrong notes" (tho' those don't help). It's about attitude. And it's lacking at in this version (and, generally speaking, at this show).

i cry when i hear jerry pour his soul out in his solo. there's so much emotion in his vocals too. truly a wonderful song, and a great version at that. I agree SteelkiltX, their best stuff came from the late seventies
I love that surprised look and smile Jerry gets in the middle of solo's like even he wasn't expecting what came out of his amp. At times it looks like he is listening to something in his head and just trying to play the same thing.
@skeena42 What did I say that got you so upset? I agree with you that this is a beautiful version of Peggy-O which is one of my favorite Dead songs. I have always loved to watch Jerry's expressions when he plays because of the intensity. Sorry if I offended you. Just curious about why you needed to call me an idiot.

Yeah, Jerry pulls the sour face when Phil hits that clam @5:45. Shows you how much Jerry was listening to what the other guys were doing while he was playing. Also how much he cared about the beauty of the music.

Long before the Internet was anything substantial in 1998, I met a guy at local jam band concert (The Big Wu) who was able to sell me 4 VHS tapes of Grateful Dead concerts. One was of their appearance on the Playboy talk show in 1969. And of of them in Germany in 1981 on Rockplast.
I agree late 70's, small venues, relaxed, like spending time in the living room with the family;and keith donna and the boys were able to do some intimate shows like being at a house concert. By the mid 80's it got to be a wild mess.
@SteelkiltX man there`s was a lot of good eras. The late 70`s yeah sure that definitely rocked; it was JGB`s best era as well. But man you can discount Brent`s first full year (1980) or well Brent's last year either (1990). 71 and 72 were pretty damn hot as well. Fuck it it's the Dead the pretty much rocked everything they did
Hearing this makes me feel like it's a sunny day in the early 90's...I don't know why I torture myself watching this...it always brings tears to my eyes. 8/9/95 was a beautiful sunny day...but so dark...and I have truly never cried so hard in my life.
I think the 6/26/94 version of this song is the best on YouTube... I know most later dead performances weren't up to par but listen to that version (with Jerry in purple) is incredible.
It has a faster pace and more emotional vocal delivery. Better solo IMO too.
i think this 78 one is hot and although i saw the dead w/jerry in 94 and 95 and i am partial to those years as far as what i enjoy the most i really dig this 78 peggy-o - im a pianist so love watchin keith and jerrys guitar and voice r great
would've been mine with my girlfriend of 7 years until she cheated on me and dumped me. ever since then i can't NOT cry hearing this song. sigh. i still love jer and the boys though. not their fault. :)
Nice. 4th tune, set one. You can hear each guitar distinctly. What a treat to see something from the spring of '78....Great moments just after the six minute mark. thank you.
Thanks for this video. What a great song, and played by the dead, the best. The guitar solo here is so good, fairly easy to play something like this as long as you know just about every musical style, just about every scale on the guitar, and have the creativity of Garcia. Nevermind, impossible for anyone but Jerry
I love to hear when he would launch a loud, soaring guitar solo out of a fairly quiet folk ballad like this, or a slow blues tune. Some performances of "Friend of the Devil" and "Comes a Time" come to mind. Tthe contrast is like pent-up emotions being released; it really affects you.
I love, love, love, love this solo...listen to it over and over, especially the upswing right before they come back into the verse...would give a day of my life away to play a solo like that.
Man, I love this song so much...it is one of the ones I heard at the 6/15/95 show..and I have cried listening to this many a times. Yep, this gun owning redneck is a proud Deadhead, and I've never felt shunned among Deadheads for my political beliefs. Jerry braught us ALL together- conservative, liberal, black, white, father, son...you name it. I love you Jerry- and you will never be forgotten. I miss you now as I did 13 years ago when you left us. Thanks for uploading this wonderful video!

This solo is a great example of Jerry not just playing the music but ...... becoming the music

The way the light balls explode on the film only add to the magic. Damn.

I love, love, love, love this solo...listen to it over and over, especially the upswing right before they come back into the verse...would give a day of my life away to play a solo like that.

that solo is AMAZING.
never heard anything in my life that can match the caliber of jer's playing on a good night.
