  • After watching your videos I was wondering what do you think about the Burkart 9K G&S flute? Also do your prefer the Professional or the Elite Burkart models?

  • It would be nice to here some long singing tones in a demonstration like this, I suppose it would allow one a better opportunity to actually here the tonal accoustical qualities of the different materials. This so called "experiment" is more of a test of mechanics and response, not difference in sound.

  • i LOVE burkart flutes.

i have one of their headjoints.

and of course you sound amazing.

  • Where's Nina?

  • The flute influences your perception.

When I use my solid gold chainsaw as opposed to just the normal ruby and emerald studded platinum one I can tell, or rather perceive it to be a better cutter. In reality they both cut just fine. Joking aside...

Can we prove the difference between sounds from your wonder instruments using YouTube? No.

I have excellent JBL speakers and a 128mb Creative SB X-Fi sound card and still can't here the difference.

  • I have the same card. its damn good aint it?

  • i guess the answer is, you have to play all ten flutes, for as long as you played your flute (#1), then do the experiment again, then you can judge accurately each one! wow that's gunna take awhile...

  • hi Nina let me assure you that #7 flute which was your own flute with the pt headjoint. this sound was the best of both worlds for you. You managed to get all the qualities of gold with the brilliance of silver. i liked #3 which was very similar to #7 but there is so much more body and presence in the #7 flute. #2 is definitly too hard and resistant to what your used to working with but the platinum for you seems to be a great combination. i highly recommend #7 for your next flute..

  • Dear Nina,How they sound differently between draw or sold tone hole? When I bought my own flute I tried some of them and I think sold one respose a little bit faster towards my fingers. But I can't tell the difference when you play them. Maybe be your fingers are much faster than mine!!HAHA

  • you know, it doesn't matter how fast your fingers move. what matters most is the sound that comes out.

  • Indeed, metal can make a difference in sound. The British flutist William Bennett (my favorite) plays on a silver flute (OLD Louise Lot). His sound is simply gorgeous. Many flutists often said that gold flutes make "darker sound". But, "darker" does not mean "better". It often sounds too heavy especially in a concert hall; in addition, the "dark sound" sacrifices the brilliance in music. Bennett makes such an incredibly wonderful sound on silver. To desire" gold" can be psychological!

  • i prefer the third any doubt

  • oops. As I reviewed i noticed that #9 had the same HJ. It still didn"t articulate as well as the others. It did sound better with you flute body.

  • I have just listened to your demonstration and can honestly say that your flute and #10 were the brightest, especially in the third octave. From my experience I believe that #4 will always be hard for you to play. The headjoint is giving you too much resistence. I winder how the gold head of #9 would have worked in #4. I'll bet you a lot better.

  • Nina you have a good videos, i like the form in the that speak, because is very understood to people that do not speak english like me. you are a excellent person.very very thank you Att:Dorfell

  • gold mech flutes are the best feel ever

  • Gold flutes are much more resistant than silver and platinum. and that shimmer you hear is the air vibrating less.

  • Hello Nina; How are you? I like very much your videos and I would like that you were giving me some tricks to work " respiration continues " and to improve the sound. Please do order videos. With very much fondness Dorfell

  • Hola Nina; ¿Como estas? Me gustan mucho tus videos y me gustaria que me dieras algunos trucos para trabajar "respiracion continua" y para mejorar el sonido. Por favor no dejes de mandar videos. Con mucho cariño Dorfell

  • Nina, your videos are informative and inspiring. I want to know the difference of sounds between hall crystal flutes, grenadilla flutes, and metal flutes too!.

  • My flute: Haynes.016 silver, platinum riser. Picked blind from other gold/silver riser HJ's. I also have two crowns: a heavy gold & a silver. The gold changes the tone to "darker?". Like the haynes gold flute. Silver is "brighter?" The crown, stopper, & airspace aren't a "physics class" simple tone generator. It is very complex with other vibrations and/or dampening effects. Material density alters it. It seems more profound for player. MC

  • I agree completely, Nina - I also play a platinum riser, and I can definitely hear the difference when I switch headjoints (I also have one that's solid silver with a 10K gold riser). I also think the choice of metals depends on the individual - for instance, I don't like playing on gold AT ALL - it's too "bright" for me, but I don't necessarily dislike it when someone ELSE plays on gold. Very strange! ~Marissa

  • By the way Nina, what piece was it that you were playing in those demos??? I seem to remember reading it at some point (years ago, I'm sure), but I can't remember what it's called. If you could let me know, I'd like to order it from Flute World...thanks! Oh, and are you planning on purchasing one of these flutes anytime soon??? ;-) ~Marissa

  • Hi Marissa: The excerpt was Boehm Grande Polonaise. I'm not sure if a new flute is in my future or not....but if I ever do change, I'll let everyone know!

  • I love your videos Nina!!! :D they're so interesting!

  • i loved this experiment! thank you so much! it was very helpful in understanding that it doesn't matter how shiny or what metal your flute is made out of...it's all in YOUR OWN playing. But on another note..what would you have to say about mixing metals..ie a gold headjoint with a silver body?? or a platinum head with a silver body or even a 14k head on a 10k body?....

  • So Nina, are you going to be purchasing one of those gold flutes? ?

  • Dear kelandjen: when I started this experiment I was really afraid that it could turn out to be expensive for me!! Ha ha. I don't know if I'll actually buy a new flute since my own flute #1 is also a "winner" in my ears...but a gold flute (10K) is definetly on my mind...

  • I you want to notice differences between two metals, the flutes might be identical, so different designs don't influence the sound quality.

Also a less ornamental and slow piece with more dynamics could help to hear the subtle changes.

  • dicompacs: I agree, that is why all flutes used were by same flutemaker (Lilian Burkart) and with same cut headjoints (M2 style). For a slower example make sure to watch the video 10 flute demonstration ROUND 2.

  • Let's open up the soldered vs. drawn debate! I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on Flute 4 vs. Flute 5. I definitely thought that you sounded sluggish on both of these relative to the others. However, your sound seemed more 'finished' on Flute 5.

What a fascinating experiment overall though! Thanks for doing this. :)

  • I thought this was a good, fair test. Your comments and thoughts were right on the money. Gold is rather hard to play on but once you get used to it, it's awesome. Plat is good too. Speaks instantly. Your conclusions and philosophy was very agreeable too! Gold mech is great too as it stays in adjustment quite well.

  • Interesting results... You certainly had an affinity for flute #3, as it seemed to produce sound most effortlessly for you (definitely more so than #10, and perhaps even more so than #1). I wish you had included a heavy walled flute as well, but maybe that will be another Demo?? Thanks for all your amazing work!

  • 14 carat gold, platinum riser, is also my preferred flute. I do not hear it on my records and cannot prove anything, but it feels and plays really well.
