  • Snoop doog feat w

  • Listening to this song, I see now what happens in my town, exactly the same condos, houses exactly the same, exactly the same people.

  • A DJ used to play Womenfolk's cover of this song every morning when I was a little kid in Beaumont, Texas. I knew even then that there was a very important message here. Later, as a teenager, my favorite band was Rush, lo and behold, they wrote a great song called Subdivisions with the same basic message. Thank you Gordon Baxter for playing this often enough to sink it into my brain and enlighten me. Thanks Malvina and luzfarol, ya'll are good ones. I will never step into the mold! Subdivisions

  • Is it bad that my son LOVES this song ? I used to sing it a lot when I was pregnant and now whenever I put him to sleep I sing it, if I don't sing this he takes forever to fall asleep <3

  • F**k conformity. Love this song.

  • My mom used to sing this song to me years ago when we'd go by the rows of prefab houses on the hillside in Daly City and South San Francisco that fit this description perfectly. She said the song was about prefab houses and prefab people and a prefab society. This is a great song, and timeless as ever.

  • And i thought Rise Against made a Song with a Message....

  • xD great

  • Occupy, occupy!

  • Even more powerful with the footage on Agrestic from Weeds.

  • i love nancy Potwin :)

  • powerful song

  • weeds XD

  • i hate yuppies too

  • Call me, we'll talk.

  • @BillyJimOMFG --I literally have NO idea what you said in any of your comments. You did not make a bit of sense...

  • "Ray, make her your last one" was a BIT more than a slight mistake.

It's a fucking REALITY CHECK, you fucking little ROCK of "David". You may take that as a pun.

  • Bitches in a box... you didn't have problems when it was Pan Am "Hockey " fights while I was covering everywhere between here an Australia.

""Local eye", right , "Dallas in the Fall" muff diver?

YOU didn't have a PROBLEM with it then. So I"ll take that as precedent, "PResent under the tree, bbought and paid for then stolen without even a Christmas since".

Tha'ts the thing. Your "Aaaa iihhhh uuuuudeeee" with people you know of, but don't know.

That's our thing - not having that.

  • In some cases, depending on the audience "I don't care" is a far more powerful statement than "Perfect".

    Wouldn't Jew agree?

All things considered, such as you, the only consideration? The "chosen" consideration?

This is going to be, as "Ray of what makes sense" would say "a work in progress", a "lesson learned in TIME".

  • What? "Aight" ?

WHAT? Bitch, you're a fucking piece of paper that fell over in my kitchen and was propped up by East Indians...

"Aight" ? For a bottle of "piss" fluff. Nah, this is where again, the famous welfare Minialism of Canada and British "oops, the OTHER Elite" fails miserable.

    How's your wallet?

  • In fact, so does the mother of all Jews, let alone Gord Sumner's fluff crew.

    (shrugs)

    VBEGger.

Not sure who called that bitch.

    Anon!

    - "The 'village' idiot".

  • Modern warfare, so to speak, in fact ancient warfare, emphasises the importance of the element of surprise as a bedrock principle of offensive strategy. What's bedrock about a bunch of fucking burnouts putting all their money on "Scar" and Aliens Movies, and cookers on stove tops and ranges for a loaded whore Jew? Nothing. That's right. Jesus KNEW they wuzza cummin for him.

Should have bought a phone from me, MOTHERFUCKER. Not a motherfucker from the phone.

    Now so does the Jew.

  • Weeeeeeeds (:

  • Вы гоните ))

  • CONFORMITY!<3

  • It reminds me of Silver Bells by Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney :D

  • @EvraFon I agree 100%. My wife does not hear it but I do. Glad I'm not the only one!!!

  • Oh no, poor little me..I shall whine about little boxes!

Stop whining people. This can be viewed in many different ways. Perhaps these "little boxes" are what make the world go round, perhaps it's a cautionary tale about being ordinary, perhaps it's both. Either way, stop bemoaning these "little boxes." It's making me nauseous.

  • @mtb416 Come on, wake up!!! Get out of your little box. This is not making things work, that's the illusion.

  • @nihilista69 Obviously you've misunderstood.

  • weed(s) brought me here!

  • Here it is nearly 50 years later and we still try to fit in some box. We can not become who we really are by trying to be like those around us. Keep on thinking free. Oh yeah this is still a great song. Thank you Malvina

  • this song is deep to me i see the little boxes walk aroud school.. and the internet.. instead of being little box i strive to be alittle circlebut then well all be little circles so either way. we always turn out the same. no beating the system

  • Weeds <3 Like if you Like =)

  • @clash92779093 I like this song more than weeds

  • Communisn

  • Just sit there with your discount ship to shore remembering the old S.O.S days, CANNIGGER.

  • The General took a HELL of a long time picking up THAT General Quarter, huh?

    Any time, Chuck fucking Norris....

  • we started with weeds just some weeks ago - this song - is so funny - and if you look at this little town daly city via satellite you can see it is REAL ! such a crazy idea of townarchitecture.

  • Love this song, also got it off Weeds ;)

  • i love this song! got it off of WEEDS! ran out of episodes to watch and have alot of left over weed! XD wht a shame

  • MORE BOXES

  • The 57 who disliked this are the reason that Katy Perry had as many #1 hits on her new album as the Beatles ever did. Shameful. The art of the story/protest song is lost on too many people these days, sadly.

  • las casitas del bario alto

  • 57 people were put in boxes and came out all the same.

  • does no one understand what she is saying? clearly we do not as we continually do and do against ourselves to help THEM out

  • @BillyJim1970 Are you okay buddy? Do you need a hug? It really sounds like you need a hug.

  • @BillyJim1970 Did you seriously just post like 8 times in a row? LOL

  • Like if you didn't find out about this song through Weeds =D

  • 57 people voted from that hillside.

  • Ku czci i pamieci Hanki Mostowiak :P

  • I am a conservative right wing Christian...

And i think Malvina Reynolds has a wonderful message in this little song...

    What have we become???

    Malvina was such a visionary

  • I kinda wish I was made of ticky-tacky. At least I'd know what I was doing with my life

  • @aljobaris TRUE! feelthesame

  • Great tune

  • weeds!!!!!!! gotta love it!!!!!!

  • I don't watch enough TV, and I never saw the point of paying for Showtime. I'd never seen the show 'Weeds' before I started watching it as late night re-runs and was totally shocked and pleasantly surprised to find out 'Little Boxes' by Malvina Reynolds was it's theme song. Everybody in the world probably already knows that

  • I have loved this song since I was a little bitty kid a decade ago. I searched for it forever, trying to remember it and with the advent of the internet and youtube tada! There it is. I had no idea what it meant when i was a little child, and now it seems so sad and poignant and true.

  • ha I meant 5 decades. Must be getting senile

  • Comment removed

  • This song is about the houses back in the 1950's being the same. Learned that in school... (:', Anyone?

  • This song is about people being the same.

  • Actually, it describes all of the brainwashed right Tbagggers!

  • That describes our society today....way ahead of it's time!

  • @sharon102645 It actually has described our society since the 50's if you think about it.

  • @sharon102645 well it described the times back then too. So it can't be called ahead of its time. Maybe things just aren't changing unfortunately

  • @sharon102645 actually it described the way society was heading at the time. It just happens that it still fits today. So more like timeless

  • @sharon102645 to be fair, it describes our society through pretty much all of history

  • @Flippy92 Couldn't agree more.

  • @Flippy92 america has no history dude, but yeah

  • @Flippy92 This song is about gated communities Haha not our history. It's about how generation after generation people in these communities end up in the same place raising their kids to be doctors and lawyers or as I call them robots.

  • I'll smoke one to this

  • AND THEY ALL LOOK JUST THE SAME

  • Weeds is about marijuana. It has to do with living in society and the use of marijuana.

  • When I heard of weeds I thought it was about marijuana... guess not if it's in any way related to this song. :/

  • uhu ' que massa amei ' :P

  • Love it!! You go, girl!

  • Thanks to Billy Connolly's "Route 66" I now know song.

  • how the fuck did i get here.... 0__o

  • I love the show weeds for introducing me to this song =)

  • Its all thanks to Weeds I know this song

  • i used to live in a large 3500sq ft ticky tacky, then for almost 2yrs after the divorce I moved into a 192 sq ft anti ticky tacky & had a blast, enjoyed life, improved every day and for that, was never quite the same :)

  • Changed my life. Thank you.

  • ticky tacky....can i like buy some off ya?!

  • Malvina Reynolds------------Has nothing to do with Weeds- Juat another rip-off

  • @piranalu you sir, are a dumbass, weeds paid rights to this song to have it on the show. and its a fuck of a lot older than the show. We arent that dumb.

  • and they all look the same

  • so true and sad, these kind of songs leave me feeling hopeless

  • When I was in 2nd grade, back in '64, this song was still fairly new (written in '62). I wanted to enter the talent contest that year and perform a Beatles song. My music teacher, who was encouraging me to enter the talent show, wanted me to sing this song. Me, being a 6 year old, was taught to mind my elders, so I did the song. When I finished singing, CRICKETS! I was PISSED! I have hated this song ever since. Thumbs DOWN from me!! Get over it!!

  • @jsmyers24151 Maybe you just sucked that much.

  • 53 people are fucking idiots who are just trying to piss people off! And It worked!!!

  • 53 people are little boxes

  • I am a right wing Christian conservative, who believes the Bible literally....

And I love Malvina Reynolds, and all her songs are fantastic and strikingly truthful.

She stood for what she believed in,,,God Bless You Malvina..I Love You

  • why would you put someone in a box?? wtf

  • @Bliber199 It's called a satire. Look it up.

  • Great song!!!

I finished every season and I'm out of weed... :(

  • @ThaMasterOfDisaster2 That was a long way to just say that you're a douche.

  • @ThaMasterOfDisaster2 I saw just few last episodes getting high. Anybody know anything about 8 season?

  • @ThaMasterOfDisaster2 Let me know when you get some. I am out too! :):):):)

  • @ThaMasterOfDisaster2 I watched the first 3 or 4 seasons stoned and now have to watch it again coz I'm foggy on a lot of details LOL! AWESOME shot tho!

  • @ThaMasterOfDisaster2 youve posted comment to wrong video

  • 99% of the views is living this life, its the reason we listen to it. or else we wouldnt give a crap.

  • i agree

  • Malvina Reynolds is just plain Great!!

  • Weeds - one of the best tvshows ever sent

  • best song ever

  • I heard this song often as a tiny kid, the Pete Seeger version, and knew it almost by heart. I had no idea of the strong anti-conformist message behind it until hearing it on here again. Sheer brilliance.

  • i hate suburbia...js.

  • Amazing song, so unique, but has a brilliant message, gonna be learning this one : )

  • my guitar teacher is making me play this. when ah showed it to me i was like haha, this is great lol

  • I remember this song from my childhood. Used to sing this with my family for fun.

Didn't know the origin until now. Thanks for posting.

  • nice song for my dreams!

  • I love this woman... This is probably one of the best songs about anti-conformity that you'll ever find. My grandma use to play it for me all the time when I was little. I adore it.

  • good song

  • she sounds a bit like tiny tim.

  • Never knew about weeds til a few days ago thinks to netflix im hip now and love that show

  • I first heard this song over 20 years ago on some documentary that addressed life for the soldiers who returned home and the construction of Levittown type communities all over the US.

  • gooooooooood!!!! ;)

  • wow i LOVE this song i listen it all the time :D

  • I never heard of this song before Weeds. Now I catch myself humming it sometimes, lol.

  • my mother loves this song

  • Why is it that social commentary songs like this, are just as true today as when they were written, even the ones that were written 50 more years ago? This now includes anything written from 1960 to the present....kinda unbelievable right. P.S. Just what the hell is tickie tackie? I always think of that when I hear the song but then forget to google it. lol

  • @kaza735 Ticky Tacky is slang for "shotty" (i.e. cheap) building materials used in subdivided houses. This is in reference to when builders were using cheap pine, covered with stucco and drywall, to replace better and more reliable building materials such as brick and solid oak.

  • im upset weeeds stopped playing this song it really fit in with the show

  • I love this song sing it alll the time, I think the best version is Malvina singing it. I want to teach my students to sing this....LOL

  • what the heck is ticky-tacky? o.O

  • @rulo1256 Money all the job she describes people do them for the money

  • HI MR. WEATHERS IN 6TH PERIOD FILM LITERATURE AT WESTMOOR!!!!!!!

  • i love this song, and not just because I love weeds

  • out of every frikin song 2 sing, she makes 1 about boxes? wtf lol

  • @ragbaf its about the suburban life at the time (houses which were boxes which looked the same)

  • @ragbaf you know your stupid right?

  • @ragbaf its about how in the 1970s people started moving into suburbs and everyone pretty much does the same thing if you look at houses now there all the same and thats when they started doing it

  • Gatta love this song.....

  • WHat year did she write and perform this??

  • @niml63 1962

  • Nef sed.

  • ticky tacky lol

  • wow. i wish i was as good a song writer as her. so simple but so memerable and beautiful

  • This reminds me of when Weeds was good.

  • Hooray for Weeds giving this song a 2nd life!

  • ticky tacky - sleazy or shoddy material used especially in the construction of look-alike tract houses.

  • @louiekazooie I don't think shes using the definition literally in most cases.

  • If I'm not mistaken, the "Little Boxes" are a lighter way for saying coffins and she was simply singing about all the mass murder from the WW2. Feel free to correct me.

  • @dannypercival

look up ticky tacky, its a term for shabbily built housing developments made in the 60s with inferior materiel's and no imagination.

  • 48 people don't live in little boxes. :)

  • @hippiesherm you are so stupid it hurts my head

  • When ever I listen to this it makes me feel good about my choice to be an art major, yes I'm going to a university, but I won't come out made of ticky tacky.

  • @Cwally8 You keep telling yourself that. Ticky-tacky is a lot like pathogenic paradigms and ideologies, those who are afflicted are totally unaware.

  • @Frostlander Ok well whether I'm afflicted or not, I'm not gonna come out of a university with a degree that I went for just to make money and nothing else. I am going for a degree in something I enjoy doing and that is the arts. Also I don't plan on living in a suburb where people are always trying to one up each other. That's stupid and not the way someone should go through life. Also I would like to travel a bit and I plan to make paintings to sell at art shows. Just thought I'd let u know.

  • @Cwally8 You are indeed wiser than I expected. You know how the internet is.

  • @Frostlander well I appreciate that, and I should have been a little more clear in my first comment. But yes the internet can be a confusing place.

  • @Cwally8 you'll just come out without a job :o

  • @3018573 so you're saying in order to have a job I have to do what everyone else does and get a business major, or nursing degree cause I won't because I'm not getting stuck in a job where I'm everything but happy. I can sell paintings for money, I'd rather do that than any of the above listed.

  • Lived most of my life in this unfortunate ticky tacky environment. Happy to live in Joshua Tree now, where there's lots of weirdness, but not ticky tacky.

  • Why do people try and hoard thumbs? What will you do with all of those thumb-ups? Wooh, some anonymous people on the internet agreed with you! Now what?

  • @momochankb ego

  • @momochankb

Relax....don't go getting your ticky-tacky-tighty-whitey's all in a bunch. They're youtube comments, not votes for a pulitzer. BTW, don't go spending all 16 of your hoarded thumbs in the same place! ; )

  • @DivinityBleu It was all said in sarcasm, so no panties in a bunch here. As for my thumbs, wow, I didn't think people actually read these comments.

  • @momochankb How ironic that that talking bout getting thumbs-up gets you lots of thumbs-up
