A DJ used to play Womenfolk's cover of this song every morning when I was a little kid in Beaumont, Texas. I knew even then that there was a very important message here. Later, as a teenager, my favorite band was Rush, lo and behold, they wrote a great song called Subdivisions with the same basic message. Thank you Gordon Baxter for playing this often enough to sink it into my brain and enlighten me. Thanks Malvina and luzfarol, ya'll are good ones. I will never step into the mold! Subdivisions
Is it bad that my son LOVES this song ? I used to sing it a lot when I was pregnant and now whenever I put him to sleep I sing it, if I don't sing this he takes forever to fall asleep <3
My mom used to sing this song to me years ago when we'd go by the rows of prefab houses on the hillside in Daly City and South San Francisco that fit this description perfectly. She said the song was about prefab houses and prefab people and a prefab society. This is a great song, and timeless as ever.
Bitches in a box... you didn't have problems when it was Pan Am "Hockey " fights while I was covering everywhere between here an Australia.
""Local eye", right , "Dallas in the Fall" muff diver?
YOU didn't have a PROBLEM with it then. So I"ll take that as precedent, "PResent under the tree, bbought and paid for then stolen without even a Christmas since".
Tha'ts the thing. Your "Aaaa iihhhh uuuuudeeee" with people you know of, but don't know.
WHAT? Bitch, you're a fucking piece of paper that fell over in my kitchen and was propped up by East Indians...
"Aight" ? For a bottle of "piss" fluff. Nah, this is where again, the famous welfare Minialism of Canada and British "oops, the OTHER Elite" fails miserable.
Modern warfare, so to speak, in fact ancient warfare, emphasises the importance of the element of surprise as a bedrock principle of offensive strategy. What's bedrock about a bunch of fucking burnouts putting all their money on "Scar" and Aliens Movies, and cookers on stove tops and ranges for a loaded whore Jew? Nothing. That's right. Jesus KNEW they wuzza cummin for him.

Here it is nearly 50 years later and we still try to fit in some box. We can not become who we really are by trying to be like those around us. Keep on thinking free. Oh yeah this is still a great song. Thank you Malvina
this song is deep to me i see the little boxes walk aroud school.. and the internet.. instead of being little box i strive to be alittle circlebut then well all be little circles so either way. we always turn out the same. no beating the system
we started with weeds just some weeks ago - this song - is so funny - and if you look at this little town daly city via satellite you can see it is REAL ! such a crazy idea of townarchitecture.
The 57 who disliked this are the reason that Katy Perry had as many #1 hits on her new album as the Beatles ever did. Shameful. The art of the story/protest song is lost on too many people these days, sadly.
I don't watch enough TV, and I never saw the point of paying for Showtime. I'd never seen the show 'Weeds' before I started watching it as late night re-runs and was totally shocked and pleasantly surprised to find out 'Little Boxes' by Malvina Reynolds was it's theme song. Everybody in the world probably already knows that
I have loved this song since I was a little bitty kid a decade ago. I searched for it forever, trying to remember it and with the advent of the internet and youtube tada! There it is. I had no idea what it meant when i was a little child, and now it seems so sad and poignant and true.
@Flippy92 This song is about gated communities Haha not our history. It's about how generation after generation people in these communities end up in the same place raising their kids to be doctors and lawyers or as I call them robots.
i used to live in a large 3500sq ft ticky tacky, then for almost 2yrs after the divorce I moved into a 192 sq ft anti ticky tacky & had a blast, enjoyed life, improved every day and for that, was never quite the same :)
@piranalu you sir, are a dumbass, weeds paid rights to this song to have it on the show. and its a fuck of a lot older than the show. We arent that dumb.
When I was in 2nd grade, back in '64, this song was still fairly new (written in '62). I wanted to enter the talent contest that year and perform a Beatles song. My music teacher, who was encouraging me to enter the talent show, wanted me to sing this song. Me, being a 6 year old, was taught to mind my elders, so I did the song. When I finished singing, CRICKETS! I was PISSED! I have hated this song ever since. Thumbs DOWN from me!! Get over it!!

If I'm not mistaken, the "Little Boxes" are a lighter way for saying coffins and she was simply singing about all the mass murder from the WW2. Feel free to correct me.
When ever I listen to this it makes me feel good about my choice to be an art major, yes I'm going to a university, but I won't come out made of ticky tacky.
@Frostlander Ok well whether I'm afflicted or not, I'm not gonna come out of a university with a degree that I went for just to make money and nothing else. I am going for a degree in something I enjoy doing and that is the arts. Also I don't plan on living in a suburb where people are always trying to one up each other. That's stupid and not the way someone should go through life. Also I would like to travel a bit and I plan to make paintings to sell at art shows. Just thought I'd let u know.
@3018573 so you're saying in order to have a job I have to do what everyone else does and get a business major, or nursing degree cause I won't because I'm not getting stuck in a job where I'm everything but happy. I can sell paintings for money, I'd rather do that than any of the above listed.
Lived most of my life in this unfortunate ticky tacky environment. Happy to live in Joshua Tree now, where there's lots of weirdness, but not ticky tacky.
Why do people try and hoard thumbs? What will you do with all of those thumb-ups? Wooh, some anonymous people on the internet agreed with you! Now what?
Relax....don't go getting your ticky-tacky-tighty-whitey's all in a bunch. They're youtube comments, not votes for a pulitzer. BTW, don't go spending all 16 of your hoarded thumbs in the same place! ; )

In some cases, depending on the audience "I don't care" is a far more powerful statement than "Perfect".
Wouldn't Jew agree?
All things considered, such as you, the only consideration? The "chosen" consideration?
This is going to be, as "Ray of what makes sense" would say "a work in progress", a "lesson learned in TIME".

When ever I listen to this it makes me feel good about my choice to be an art major, yes I'm going to a university, but I won't come out made of ticky tacky.
Cwally8 4 months ago
@Cwally8 You keep telling yourself that. Ticky-tacky is a lot like pathogenic paradigms and ideologies, those who are afflicted are totally unaware.

@Cwally8 You are indeed wiser than I expected. You know how the internet is.
Frostlander 4 months ago
@Frostlander well I appreciate that, and I should have been a little more clear in my first comment. But yes the internet can be a confusing place.

@Cwally8 you'll just come out without a job :o

BTW, don't go spending all 16 of your hoarded thumbs in the same place! ; )

@DivinityBleu It was all said in sarcasm, so no panties in a bunch here. As for my thumbs, wow, I didn't think people actually read these comments.

@momochankb How ironic that that talking bout getting thumbs-up gets you lots of thumbs-up
