Can we try to force a UN resolution so that Science cannot be blasphemed against? I wouldn't want it to actually pass, because it would show just how moronic the UN actually is, but if Religions can claim special status, reality should be able to claim special status. Namely that of being reality...
that i love. I personally stopped believing in Santa when the kids on the bus made fun of me for it (though I still kept going along with it even after I knew it was my mother, because it's kind of fun, when you realize the truth, accept it, understand it, but still pretend in the spirit of harmless fun)
this resolution was taken up by around 50 islamic states in the UN, spearheaded by Pakistan in its headquaters in islamabad! these are theocracies, they dont understand or respect a democracy? islam and judeo-christian demigods are trying to destroy the earth by targeting our rational peaceful nature. WERE FUCKED IF WE WONT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW!
i think what joxman is trying to say is that all ideas are equally valid in their initial state, that is as an abstrat concept within the human mind. it is only when we investigate or test these ideas that we can determind which ones actually make sence in reality and which ones do not acurately describe the world around us. or maybe im just looking into this too much...
So much misinformation about the UN, and how it works.
UN General Assembly resolutions - which is what we are talking about in this case - cannot create binding criminal law in a country. They just can't.
The UN Security Council can create a binding resolution under chapter 7, which concerns threats to international peace and security. But the US, UK, France, Russia and China have veto power.
This is not an SC resolution, and will bind no-one to do anything.
While I have some sympathy for your alarm at the UN resolution, the reality is that the UN can't pass a "binding" resolution.
Resolutions aren't binding. That's just the way it works. All this huffing and puffing about a binding resolution is hot air. It would have no effect! Merely a statement of political position by countries that already believe it.
Governments disagree on things. Hold the front page! They would disagree with or without the UN; at least in the UN they talk.
Sorry, you are correct, I did not differentiate. a UN GA resolution such as this one can't be binding... certainly not in any sense of criminalising an activity.
A UN Security Council resolution under ch 7 can be, but a) this is not what is being discussed here and b) US, France, UK, Russia and China have vetos.
There was already a nonbinding resolution on this matter passed a while ago, but the UN is attempting to pass a binding one that would require all member nations to pass a law against, essentially, insulting religion or religious beliefs.
Not that it matters, anyways; if they do pass it, you can bet the fact that we already made anti-blasphemy laws unconstitutional will override this nonsense.
ffreethinker: Thanks so much for your posts ... you are helping free thinkers everywhere as the absurdities and sinister nature of monotheistic dogma becomes more and more apparent, and it loses it's vile grip.
Ah, the "science fiction" argument. Too bad it lacks any argument, and is a straight up, assumed assertion.
But then, even science fiction is useful to actual scientific terms. We can thank Star Trek for motivating scientists to actually build transporter technology. They've 'transported' an atom, I believe. Is that 'science fiction', or is it science before its time?
Darwin predicted a moth with a foot-long tongue, as a flower existed to match. They just recently discovered the moth.
creationism is philosophy not science. is there a place for it in schools? Yes I think there is, but not in science class. Also it should be taught with other religions and thoughts. :P
I strongly disagree. We live in highly dangerous times and also teaching children to be warriors for "Jesus" is not only stupid and wrecks their brains, it is grossly irresponsible in todays highly technological world.
I believe we most certainly should not tolerate promoting religion as a truth anymore. We have had our world trade centers blown up and thousands of our youth killed. It is time to STOP THE NONSENSE!
I was not suggesting a class where children are indocturnated(sp) to Jesus. I believe that a class on philosophy would be good... covering major religions and thinkers... including atheism.
I'm not religious. I grew up in Canada where multi-culturism was taught. We celebrate our differences.
no, but seriously, not all ideas are equally valid. that's the sort of dangerous equivocation that leads to people believing in alternative medicine, energy healing, crystal nonsense, etc.
"everyone and everything is valid... there is nothing unimportant. valid comes from value"
This, my friend, is bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.
Validity does not come from value. Just because something is valid doesn't mean it is valuable, and just because something has value in some fashion most certainly does NOT mean it is valid.
If you're willing to equate morality and factuality, you're beyond help.
There are these things called FACTS. Ideas about reality can be judged based on whether or not they are TRUE. If they are true, they are valid. If not, they are invalid.
As for doing the same things a Christian fanatic might do, call me the next time someone bombs an abortion clinic in the name of atheism.
That can be seen as true, but is it a fact? No. The earths surface revolves away from it.
And your right it is not a moral view I suppose I was talking about a persons world view that colors what we see as facts. World view isn't right either...a persons collective view of reality. Arrrg there is a better word for it.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? or should I go to that fitting of that white coat with the long sleeves :P
That can be seen as true, but is it a fact? No. The earths surface revolves away from it. "
Actually YES, it IS a fact, because we've *defined* the parameters that make that statement true. We define "sunrise" and "east" in accordance with what we observe.
Not all worldviews are equally valid. Science and fact are not a matter of opinion.
Faith, as an human experience, is valid. It's the state of being sure of something without evidence to back it up. People have made millions from the suckers at casinos....and churches.
Atheism is not a set of beliefs. And there are more religions than Judaism and Christianity. I don't believe in ANY gods of ANY religion. I don't believe in anything supernatural.
Notice I still haven't said a word about what I DO believe, because that's entirely irrelevant to my position on the existence of god(s), which is the entirety of atheism.
No, they AREN'T. There is some idea that is closer to a reflection of what actually exists in reality. When someone claims that the earth was made 6,000 years ago over the course of six days, *their ideas are not as valid*.
Thank you for clarifying. It surprised me that you would state that creationism is philosophy as I look at it simply as a fairy tale. That is what threw me off.
I believe that we all should respect and tolerate others beliefs and religions. This dose not mean that we can't question or debate them. Debate is healthy when it is respectful. Debate either makes you more sure of your ideals or broadens your perspective... both are good :P
If everybody did as I suggested, and their particular beliefs are not illegal, then there would be no extremists which, in my opinion, is the cause of many wrongs in the world today.
I know this will not happen though, because those religions need to be extreme or else they will die out. If everyone were rational and thoughtful religions would be gone.
Religions are like an organism... they have self preservation at there core.
It doesn't matter if their beliefs are illegal. It's currently legal to refuse treatment for your cancerous child and instead opt to simply pray for them. Jehovah's Witnesses can legally refuse life-saving blood transfusions. And so on.
Teaching children lies is despicable, legal or not.
Those who bear false witness against all those in the science fields, who just happen to claim to be christian, not only break on the the ten commandments, they also prove to spread lies, therefore have become false teachers and false preachers.
I would blaspheme religion (especially the violent system of thoughts such as christianity and islam) every day and post youtube videos all the time blaspheming religion if the UN passes this excrement binding resolution.
Great video, creationism has no place in a plubic education system, this is a "secular country" even tho it doesn't seem like it, and creationism isn't science... keep it out of our childrens minds as a viable science alternative to Evolution.
Freedom of religion + freedom of speech Freedom of thought = basic human 'right'.
Considering that 'religion' and superstition will criticise and THREATEN using their freedom of religion (dogma) , and claim their freedom of speech is being stifled and they are being persecuted by criticism from other religions or 'atheists', then really, this is just playground stuff.
I'm going to take that guy's offer on: I'm going to schedule a visit w/some local pastor in his office, and make a fair, genteel, rational case for protecting the future of education.
I truly believe if we all did this, we would begin to have a vast and major impact.
The very first thing I speak of is how "Jesus" was supposed to be about truth and without this, false preachers and false teachers abound....... or something like this.
The more who hold ministers and priests accountable for their wrecking the minds of youth, or at least confrinting thme on this, the more they will realize they need to change.
AaronRa and ThunderFoot.... on TV ... awesome.... and many thanks to those guys and all the others making great educational videos that refute the theist nonesense!
Martin Wagner has it right. If this resolution passes in the U.N., all free nations should resign from the U.N. and I would suggest taking it one step further under land reclamation. Bulldoze the shit hole into the sea.
If the United Nations passed such a decree, we will see athiest, christians, muslims, and all others unite to speak out against such impossible stupidity and violations of individual rights.
Not muslims. It's mostly muslim nations who are pushing this - primarily Pakistan, a nation that executed a man for telling his students that Mohammad wasn't a muslim before he wrote the Koran.
I'm always amazed that the religious will hide behind the idea of their feelings being hurt as if it were a legitimate cause for legislation.
You freely tell me daily that I will spend an eternity being tormented in hellfire if I refuse to accept your myths, and yet I am barred from criticizing the things you baselessly assert?
Sorry, sir, no thank you. Keep your Bible off of my blasphemy.
Yes "macro-evolution" is a myth: one created by creationists. There is no micro or macro evolution, there is only evolution of X population going back Y number of generations.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
micro-evolution (change within species) is a selection of existing genetic information, macro-evolution (change from one species to another species)involves a creation of complex DNA structures, Scientists have never witnessed a spontanious mutation which has resulted in the addition of complex DNA structures. The creative force in evolution theory is only a THEORY, it has not ever been witnessed!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So your saying that because some theories are true that evolution theory must be true as well? You BELIEVE its true because you presuppose that there is no creator, I BELIEVE its false because I presuppose the Creator God. You can believe whatever you want but I don't want my taxdollars teaching someones beliefs concerning the origin of life to my children. Natural selection does not create complex DNA structures, it is a changing force not a creative force. There must B a creative force as well
*sigh* If facts change, the theory changes. Don't like the theory? Go find new facts.
And for goodness sake, learn the difference between a scientific theory and the word "theory" used colloquially. What are you, in 4th grade?
I want my children taught the best knowledge currently available. But more importantly - I want them taught HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY, a task at which our education system seems to have failed you.
Facts don't change, they remain the same, only our interpretation of the facts change. And our interpretation of the facts are determined by our presuppositions(beliefs). I'm curious, do you even admit the possibilty that evolution theory may have to be discarded altogether? Or do your beliefs dictate that the Creator God cannot exist.
It was a fact that the earth was flat. It was a fact that diseases were caused by evil demonic curses. It was a fact that once you caught HIV/AIDS, you were SCREWED.
Facts can and do change.
Is it a fact that god exists, or is it merely your presupposition based on bronze age myths?
opie" The reason why we don't have to worry about evolution going away, is because All of the scientific evidence proves evolution and adds to the facts of the theory. There Is no scientific disagreement.....Only among fairy tale worshippers.
that's one of our major obsticles is to educate this country again about math and science. if we are able to do so, people such as you will no longer be able to misuse the word "theory" in a scientific context. the fact that people like that idiot ben stein are able to sucessfully do so is pretty distressing. peace out
The UN is basically useless anyway. EVERYONE ignores them

this resolution was taken up by around 50 islamic states in the UN, spearheaded by Pakistan in its headquaters in islamabad! these are theocracies, they dont understand or respect a democracy? islam and judeo-christian demigods are trying to destroy the earth by targeting our rational peaceful nature.

This is not an SC resolution, and will bind no-one to do anything.
markyturner 2 years ago
"But the US, UK, France, Russia and China have veto power."
So I guess all the other countries are just fucked then, huh?
"The UN Security Council can create a binding resolution under chapter 7, which concerns threats to international peace and security."
That kind of sounds like global government to me.
787Bisurdaddy 2 years ago
While I have some sympathy for your alarm at the UN resolution, the reality is that the UN can't pass a "binding" resolution.
Resolutions aren't binding. That's just the way it works. All this huffing and puffing about a binding resolution is hot air. It would have no effect! Merely a statement of political position by countries that already believe it.
Governments disagree on things. Hold the front page! They would disagree with or without the UN; at least in the UN they talk.
markyturner 2 years ago
Resolutions *can* be binding.
en[.]wikipedia.[o]rg/wiki/United_Nations_resolution
FreePlay 2 years ago
Sorry, you are correct, I did not differentiate. a UN GA resolution such as this one can't be binding... certainly not in any sense of criminalising an activity.
A UN Security Council resolution under ch 7 can be, but a) this is not what is being discussed here and b) US, France, UK, Russia and China have vetos.
markyturner 2 years ago
I think there may be some confusion here.

Joxman2k 2 years ago
I strongly disagree. We live in highly dangerous times and also teaching children to be warriors for "Jesus" is not only stupid and wrecks their brains, it is grossly irresponsible in todays highly technological world.
I believe we most certainly should not tolerate promoting religion as a truth anymore. We have had our world trade centers blown up and thousands of our youth killed. It is time to STOP THE NONSENSE!
emeralds222 2 years ago 3
I was not suggesting a class where children are indocturnated(sp) to Jesus. I believe that a class on philosophy would be good... covering major religions and thinkers... including atheism.
I'm not religious. I grew up in Canada where multi-culturism was taught. We celebrate our differences.

FreePlay 2 years ago
Sheesh. a true or false judgement of an idea is a moral judgement....
I guess I'm talking about is the underlying truth... a person is a person, a thought is a thought, an Idea is an idea.
everyone and everything is valid... there is nothing unimportant. valid comes from value
When atheists denounce and reject religion... they are doing the same things as a Christian fanatic might do.
Just swap out "religion" with "non-believers"
Joxman2k 2 years ago
"everyone and everything is valid... there is nothing unimportant. valid comes from value"
This, my friend, is bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.
Validity does not come from value. Just because something is valid doesn't mean it is valuable, and just because something has value in some fashion most certainly does NOT mean it is valid.
Elitistb616 2 years ago 3
If you're willing to equate morality and factuality, you're beyond help.
There are these things called FACTS. Ideas about reality can be judged based on whether or not they are TRUE. If they are true, they are valid. If not, they are invalid.
As for doing the same things a Christian fanatic might do, call me the next time someone bombs an abortion clinic in the name of atheism.
Fool.

Does the sun always set in the east?
That can be seen as true, but is it a fact? No. The earths surface revolves away from it.
And your right it is not a moral view I suppose I was talking about a persons world view that colors what we see as facts. World view isn't right either...a persons collective view of reality. Arrrg there is a better word for it.

"Does the sun always set in the east?
That can be seen as true, but is it a fact? No. The earths surface revolves away from it. "
Actually YES, it IS a fact, because we've *defined* the parameters that make that statement true. We define "sunrise" and "east" in accordance with what we observe.
Not all worldviews are equally valid. Science and fact are not a matter of opinion.

emeralds222 2 years ago
I believe that we all should respect and tolerate others beliefs and religions. This dose not mean that we can't question or debate them. Debate is healthy when it is respectful. Debate either makes you more sure of your ideals or broadens your perspective... both are good :P
Joxman2k 2 years ago
"I believe that we all should respect and tolerate others beliefs and religions."
Why?
If someone's religion dictates that they are to sacrifice a small child every day to appease the moon god, should we tolerate and respect it?
If someone's religion dictates that they should foist their beliefs upon us all and demand that we submit, should we tolerate and respect that?
What is respectable about believing irrationally in things that are, in all probability, false?
FreePlay 2 years ago 3
@FreePlay
Just my thoughts I guess :P
Joxman2k 2 years ago
It doesn't matter if their beliefs are illegal. It's currently legal to refuse treatment for your cancerous child and instead opt to simply pray for them. Jehovah's Witnesses can legally refuse life-saving blood transfusions. And so on.
Teaching children lies is despicable, legal or not.

Considering that 'religion' and superstition will criticise and THREATEN using their freedom of religion (dogma) , and claim their freedom of speech is being stifled and they are being persecuted by criticism from other religions or 'atheists', then really, this is just playground stuff.

Yes "macro-evolution" is a myth: one created by creationists. There is no micro or macro evolution, there is only evolution of X population going back Y number of generations.
jrparri 2 years ago 5
This comment has received too many negative votes show
micro-evolution (change within species) is a selection of existing genetic information, macro-evolution (change from one species to another species)involves a creation of complex DNA structures, Scientists have never witnessed a spontanious mutation which has resulted in the addition of complex DNA structures. The creative force in evolution theory is only a THEORY, it has not ever been witnessed!
opie314 2 years ago
A Theory like Gravity, A Theory like relativity, a Theory like the particle theroy of matter... hrrrm...
Macro Evolution is Micro Evolution over long periods of time. Nothing more, nothing less.

There must B a creative force as well
opie314 2 years ago
*sigh* If facts change, the theory changes. Don't like the theory? Go find new facts.
And for goodness sake, learn the difference between a scientific theory and the word "theory" used colloquially. What are you, in 4th grade?
I want my children taught the best knowledge currently available. But more importantly - I want them taught HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY, a task at which our education system seems to have failed you.
jrparri 2 years ago 3
Facts don't change, they remain the same, only our interpretation of the facts change. And our interpretation of the facts are determined by our presuppositions(beliefs). I'm curious, do you even admit the possibilty that evolution theory may have to be discarded altogether? Or do your beliefs dictate that the Creator God cannot exist.
opie314 2 years ago
It was a fact that the earth was flat. It was a fact that diseases were caused by evil demonic curses. It was a fact that once you caught HIV/AIDS, you were SCREWED.
Facts can and do change.
Is it a fact that god exists, or is it merely your presupposition based on bronze age myths?
