i prefer Seymore; he comited genoside and talked about it like it was nothing, died after you first fight him and sticks around til you beat him 4 times, and was close to becoming Sin (the most powerful thing in X, you never fight it completly either, just parts of it's body, not only that but since Sin is really Jecht (male protagonist's dad) they manage to calm him down before fighting his last and most powerful body parts, they couldn't have won if Jecht DID what to kill everyone)
we learned today? Marle is crazy and blames the accordance of the villains for the death of Crono, and is able to jump into the pit to stop the villain to blame
So where in the heirarchy of Final Fantasy villains would you put someone like, oh, Exdeath? Or Vayne? Better yet, rank these villains in order of awesomeness: Garland (end fight), The Emperor, Cloud of Darkness, Golbez, Exdeath, Kefka, Sephiroth, Ultimecia, Kuja, Seymour (NOT Jecht), and Vayne.
@TheMrRipleyz Hm...interesting choice. If I might ask, why that particular order for accomplishments? Personally, I'd rank Vayne a little higher on the list. After all, he succeeded in taking over his father's empire.
Sephiroth is such an amazing villain when you take into account how small his screen time actually is. He's just like this ominous presence, which makes him all the more creepy and sinister. I do like Kefka, but he never really struck me as evil so much as simply batshit crazy

As for your comments on who the better characters are, I haven't played any Final Fantasy, so I will leave that alone. The Jokers, however, I do have a little to say. Each person who has been the Joker brought something different to the Joker. The more comical Jokers are my personal favorites, but I have to admit that The Dark Knight revolutionized the way the Joker's personality could be viewed.
wow...there are a lot of Sephy haters commenting. True: sephiroth is not the BEST villain, but I think he was pretty good. His only major weaknesses was the typical villain's pride and that he never did anything HIMSELF (always using someone or something). Kefka is NOT better than Sephiroth!! They're actually really similar. Seriously, some people may try to deny this, but I think A LOT of folks hate on Sephy b/c they want to spite the popular figure and return to the "classics", like FFVI.
Dead Zone Dragon Ball Z reference? i wish we never saw Garlic Jr. again after he got sucked in their his little ark or movie or whatever it was scared the crap out of me when i was little
Ok, i got to dalton and started fighting and thought, "lets see how HCBailly kills him." so i watch it and when i went back to kill dalton he was already dead and i was like.... wow
I'd take Kefka over Sephiroth as well, seeing as Kefka was driven mad by a procedure that should have only enabled him to use magic. Sephiroth on the other hand lost it because his mother some how was no longer his real mother in his twisted mind due to him being injected with Jenova's cells while in her womb, then he proceeded to throw a tantrum, burn down Nibelheim, & kill almost all there. I could see if Jenova was controlling him but he was aware, that just made him come off as a tad lame.
@PlacidDirge Sephiroth already had some deep-seated issues with being different from other people (play Crisis Core). When he learned that he was "special" because he had been prenatally engineered from the cells from some alien monstrosity, and that his life was one big, sick experiment, it pushed him over the edge.
Although I do agree that, given that he came off as such a calm badass before coming to Nibelheim, the sudden plunge into madness felt a bit weird.
@cynicsfaith Indeed. Although I didn't play CC I knew of his issues, but when looking at him in FF7 he comes off almost as "Narmy".
I guess it more the fault of bad writing, or rather "all in the manual" seeing as more creditable villain building back story was given several years after FF7.
Spoilers:
The first game threw me off even more when I learned the he was never under Jenova's control, but the other way around.
There are no more golems in the portal, so it sucks Dalton in. He's lost in time or another dimension or something. He makes a return in the extra dungeon on the DS (which is also a lost dimension thing), sort of leading up to the events of Chrono Cross. I haven't beaten Chrono Cross, so I dunno if Dalton's mentioned there or not.
Hm... between the three of them, I think I'd pick Kefka. He might not have a lot of personality apart from doing stuff for 'teh evulz' but it's fun atching him. I don't really like Golbeze a a big villain and Sepiroth just is sooo overrated. Yeah, he's fine i guess and CC made him pretty good, but just FF VII? O-ver.rated.
My overall favourite would probably be XII's Vayne. Like his motivation and such, though he is kind of clicheed.
I realize this is over a year late, but to answer your questions:
The Golem Boss himself tells you that he's afraid of heights. When the first countdown ends at 5:49 he says "Umm...". After the next countdown he says "I hate heights." He'll eventually run away from the battle, which explains why he wasn't around when Dalton Plus summoned him. You just killed him too quickly is all.
Kefka>Sephiroth & Golbez. Kefka has more personality and Character development in my opinion. Sephiroth has more character development than Golbez, but I'd still say Golbez>Sephiroth ^^
the emperor is not mentioned as the best villain but in dissidia he played a big role, and he influenced the other villains to be who they are now. but since EVERYTHING is based on popularity everyone would say Sephy. don't get me wrong I like him, but HC has good points on being able to entertain. To take time and think who's the truly best detailed villain, it just has to be kefka. and tbh i never seen DK but i hear its a great movie
I wouldn't participate in the most powerful villain because I don't believe in such a thing. But I would say that Kefka is stronger than Sephiroth... but by a little for me. Sephiroth as by far my fave boss and as for Kefka, yeah he was entertaining, but then just got plain scary for me.
As for the Joker thing, I'd much prefer Ledger's Joker because he was so entertaining to watch and I like the approach on him as well: a psychotic killer instead of a funny person who loves jokes.
I agree with Jack Nicholas' joker being superior to Ledger... Jack fit the role much much better than Ledger, I thought. They both played their roles well, and it made the movies awesome as a result, though. In my opinion, I'm glad Heath was in the modern day batman movie; because frankly, Christian Bale's acting ability with the batman wasn't doing it for me... I'm more of a fan of Michael Keaton myself.
Sephiroth didn't really have an impact in FF7 itself. I actually went and checked the game script. They mention Sephiroth about halfway through the game and he doesn't even have that much dialouge (outside of flashbacks). Rufus Shinra takes more of the focus of the game than Sephiroth.
well if he used all they same tricks, what would be the point of having a new Joker? i personally liked Ledger's Joker more, though i may be a bit bias since my memory of Nicholas' Joker's a bit fuzzy.
@raddudeguy Kefka has no personality, no real reason for killing all the people he does. Sephiroth is evil not only because he is in control of his actions (unlike Kefka), but he chooses the wrong thing.
@TheKevinWalker IMO, the reason why Kefka wants to destroy everything is, well, he just hates everything. You really don't need a reason to hate something, and in Kefka's case, it's everything but himself. Sephiroth's character development could have been good, but instead, the moment he knows the truth about his existence, he just wants to destroy anything for no real reason.
Golbez has much more character development than Sephiroth and Kefka. But Kefka is just so damn hilarious.
@Galdhon The reason that Sephiroth wanted to destroy everything is because he felt obligated to complete his "mother's" work. Jenova came to destroy the Planet and that's exactly what he intended to do; and he did it in a similar fashion (with the whole meteor and crater thing).
to comment on the Vader using Sith lightning, Vader can use it, but as it is described in the book Rise of Darth Vader, he used and and it destroyed his life support systems, they had to replace them, so he never uses it again
I'm not a fan of Sephiroth because...well, just think about it! At first he spent the whole game running from you, then PLOT TWIST! He was really trapped in a sphere of LIQUID WATER!!!!!!! What the hell? I mean, mabye it was mako, or somthing, but Cloud fell in the damn lifestream and lived without a scratch on him! But I digress. Disc 1 of FF7 was disgraceful enough to land Sephiroth pretty far down my list of villans.
Well, Sephirroth doesn't spend the whole game running from you. It's the other way around; he's luring Cloud in for most of disc 1.
As for Cloud surviving the LIFEstream... well, I'm not even sure I need to say anything more...
Sephiroth is a big MacGuffin, but he serves the storyline by revealing/intricately tying into all sorts of details concerning Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Vincent, Zack, Shinra, the Jenova Project, and so on.
Sorry, I meat to say at first it seemed like he was running from you. You give a convincing arguement, but nothing explains how such a powerful villan could possibly be trapped in a sphere of liquid water.
Okay, Cloud didn't go through the Lifestream without a scratch. He was comatose for a good bit of the game. I will agree with you. Sephiroth didn't make himself known as much as Kefka. Sephiroth's defining scene was the burning of Nibelheim. Kefka
1. Poisoned people
2. Eradicated most of the life on the planet.
3. Killed all who opposed him with judgement bolts from the sky
4. Had a cult of followers
I think the rest of the media of FF7 are what made Sephiroth what he is today.
As for bosses, I rank Kefka VERY low. Like, above the Cloud of Darkness, but below Emperor Palamekia low. Golbeza might top my list (if he even counts though, being that he wasn't the final boss), and Sephiroth is great as a source of intrigue. People complaining that he's actually Jenova for most of the game are missing the point.
Kefka is just evil, crazy, and ridiculous, all to the point where I just can't care about him one way or the other.
Yes, the Japanese version's text was this goofy. He has this setup about how he'll be making this his new throne, and it needs a fantastic name, then he dubs the ship "Sky Dalton GyoKUza". "Gyokuza" means "throne", but Dalton picks the most retarded name possible, and accents (by way of a lengthened vowel) the wrong syllable of gyokuza (should be the first) for added silliness. The "stop the music" part is basically identical ("stop the music" is even in katakana English).
GolemBoss will actually eventually just run away. I think he does 2 countdowns, announces he's afraid of heights, and then runs. But if he does that, you don't get the XP, so might as well kill him.
he does attack but only once and sometimes he never attacks at all if you dont do anything at the begginging until he says chew on tthis hes supposed to use iron ball its happend to me but its only happend once
OMG, I fought the Golem Boss and after his first countdown he just says "um..." Then starts another countdown after that. Then he rants about how he/she/it HATES heights and cowers in fear. You were right Baily, the Golem Boss is just a joke. Lol. Atleast you get stuff for beating him. I would tell you to try it out, but it does take time to get to him.
In terms of pure crazed thirst for power I actually gotta give Golbez an ever so slight nod because that's all he was after was the ultimate power, now Kefka honestly is just out of his mind and wanted the destruction of all reality.
No Bailey, you are damn right. Sepiroth is a bishonen momma's boy. If Locke had some troubled past with Kefka and FF 6 was the first FF game in 3d, that would be Kefka's spot.
I've only played FF7 and I do think Sephiroth is one of the most memorable villians, but I also think he's so one-dimensional. I think his popularity has a lot to do with his character design. He was definitely nice to look at. But as a character? Eh.
Well, the same could be said for John McCain. And Sarah Palin. Barack Obama would still be president, but he'd probably have to choose a new running mate.
Sephiroth, while he IS a pretty cool villain, remove his gigantic sword (seriously, is he trying to compensate for something?) and his long hair and what do you get? A generic, paperthin Saturday morning cartoon villain. And why do all the FFVII fanboys think that Sephiroth is the main villain? Seriously, Hojo and Jenova did a LOT more stuff related to the friggin' storyline than Sephiroth! Not to mention, Sephiroth only killed like 20 people plus a Midgar Zolom. Kefka killed MILLIONS.
Technically, Sephiroth was using Jenova, so even though he wasn't really there, he might as well have been. Still, his influence was absent from more than 50% of the game, which was disappointing to me.
that to me was like a big middle finger....at first tho but then when I studied literature more....it seemed like a good plot twist.....as M Night says "VAT A TWIST!"
Hmmm, I like Exdeath the best. He's just a pretty scary villain, and his body count is HUGE! I mean, one can only assume that people who get trapped in the Void are as good as dead. Besides, he's the best character in Dissidia thanks to All-Guard...
Sephy gets an A for effort and a C+ for evilness, But Exdeath and Golbez get A's for effort and Evilness. Kefka gets an A++++++++ For evilness because he has a bigger body count than all 3 of them, seriously, he slaughtered an entire kingdom, and sephy just killed a village, some guards, a president, aeris, and a midgar zolom, what a panzi.
And he killed Aeris from behind. That's cheap. But if you're going by body count, you might want to consider Kuja from FF9. He destroyed an entire planet.
I agree with you HC about Bosses for Final Fantasy, Kefka is the best, but that comment about Heath Ledger...Joker is suppose to be like that. The original joker acts just like Heath played him...not like Jack's Joker where they made Joker seem like a ****ing circus act gone wrong. Besides, I can see a person in real life being as crazy as Heath Ledger's Joker.
Sephiroth can kiss my ass...what a pussy...bring out Kefka and Golbez and have them team up...
Yep, you're in trouble now. Lol! I personally find heath ledger the better joker but nicholson's joker was awesome too. The fact that ledger's joker is more sinister than jack's is why I say Heath's was better.
Bah, Sephiroth. Androgynous momma's boy, clearly compensating for SOMETHING - and what did he actually do? Killed Aerith (yeah, like that is an accomplishment) summoned Meteor, which was ultimately foiled by the girl he already killed and mindraped an emo kid. Woooh. A round of applause for Captain Ambitious! Advent Children? Where he appeared for solid 5 minutes for the sole purpose to get his ass handed by the emo kid? Hardcore.
And Kefka? He - destroyed - the - freaking - world!
This was by the way meant tounge-in-cheek, we are talking about omnicidal megalomaniac psychopaths here after all :) Still I don't get the fandom. Well, the creepy yaoi fangirls, alright, long-white-haired-pretty-guy, that's pretty obvious. But if the game wouldn't remind us from the beginning that he is "the dude" and without his kick-the-dog moments, we wouldn't even know he is supposed to be a villain. Shinra at least ha the corrupt company executive and Hojo the Mengele thing going for them.
The Golem Boss didn't escape, the Golem Boss was the Golem who was afraid of heights ... he kinda went poof and therefore didn't show up anymore when called ;).
I agree with you, Kefka is the best villain in Final Fantasy. Sephiroth was good but not as great as fanboys make him out to be. On the Joker debate, I think both versions were great. I enjoyed watching them both; if I had to choose, I'd say Heath Ledger was better, IMHO.
You are in trouble! lol, jk, but I do like Sephiroth, he is like a mortalized satan (probably not a word), if you have ever fought him in KH, he is just down right beastly, and still my fav.
haha HC i was just fightin this boss i read some of the things he said for fun and then he suprised me by RUNING AWAY! yea he runs away if u dont kill him in time xD
For a lot of people, Final Fantasy VII was the first "Final Fantasy" they ever played. It was just a great experience all around, and it seems like I keep playing other Final Fantasy games hoping to find something as incredible, only to be let down again and again. Kefka was just an annoyance, Ultimecia was lame (secret villain peh..), Kuja was pretty cool, but I still have to give Sephiroth my vote. He killed clouds woman in front of him, and then he bounced! That's pretty fucked if you ask me.
Well, we all have our opinions on who's our favorite villan and all, but I have to give Kefka my vote. Why? Because he's such a twisted villan. He doesn't simply kill a few dozens or hundred people like Sephiroth (I don't think Seph killed that many, but I never managed to complete FF7, so correct me if I'm wrong on that), he literally changes the world and becomes ruler of it, killing everyone that doesn't respect him.
Ultimecia was lame, I agree, and Kuja like's dressing like a woman.
I will agree that there are villians better than Sephitoth, namely the joker cause he gives me goosebumps. Sephiroth is epic though because he is the bad ass of the most well known FF game so he gets credit. Still Skieth the Terror of Death from .Hack//Infection gives me nightmares, that is power and insanity on a whole new level in my book.
For me the main villain in FFVII was the ShinRa Corporation, Sephiroth wasn't as epic. Of course I wanted to stop him, he was going to blow the world up, but ShinRa constantly felt like the real threat. I'd say they rank pretty high compared to all FFs, I wish that in FF villain discussions they'd be brought up more.
I agree with you on Kefka and Jack Nicholson's Joker. I prefer Heath's because thats the kind of Joker I'm used to in the graphic novels I've read, and yet I love how goofy Jack Nicholson's Joker is. I just like the Joker in general, which is probably why I also like Kefka. And yet I like Sephiroth a lot, but then again, FF7 was the first I ever played and beat... Oh well. :-D

Apparently, if you don't manage to kill the Golem Overlord within a certain amountof time, he'll kill himself for you.
Earthbound92 1 year ago
I realize this is over a year late, but to answer your questions:
The Golem Boss himself tells you that he's afraid of heights. When the first countdown ends at 5:49 he says "Umm...". After the next countdown he says "I hate heights." He'll eventually run away from the battle, which explains why he wasn't around when Dalton Plus summoned him. You just killed him too quickly is all.

He does run away if you take too long killing him. I found this out the hard way.

I still prefer this game over any Final Fantasy. Chrono Trigger is just that much better, as it takes the elements of Final Fantasy to a new level.

Perhaps sticking to Chrono Trigger is more desirable than annoying the people who grew up with FF7 rather than FF4/6 is a good idea.

the emperor is not mentioned as the best villain but in dissidia he played a big role, and he influenced the other villains to be who they are now. but since EVERYTHING is based on popularity everyone would say Sephy. don't get me wrong I like him, but HC has good points on being able to entertain. To take time and think who's the truly best detailed villain, it just has to be kefka. and tbh i never seen DK but i hear its a great movie
gido0471 2 years ago
just wondering is exp shared between party members not in the party like in ffVII where they still level up just not as fast
harew22 2 years ago
IIRC, inactive party members receive 75% of the EXP of the active ones in battle. However, they receive no TP, which is more important anyway.
HCBailly 2 years ago
I wouldn't participate in the most powerful villain because I don't believe in such a thing. But I would say that Kefka is stronger than Sephiroth... but by a little for me. Sephiroth as by far my fave boss and as for Kefka, yeah he was entertaining, but then just got plain scary for me.
As for the Joker thing, I'd much prefer Ledger's Joker because he was so entertaining to watch and I like the approach on him as well: a psychotic killer instead of a funny person who loves jokes.

Sephiroth> Kefka> Golbez
TheNeoLoneWolf 2 years ago
For my personal take on the bosses:
Kefka> Golbez > Sephiroth
All of them fit the games they were in. I do think their music goes kinda like this: One Winged Angel> Dancing Mad > Clad in Black
Sephiroth is my least favorite boss out of the 3, but he does have the best Final Form theme.
Natashina01 2 years ago

Rufus Shinra takes more of the focus of the game than Sephiroth.
shinobi67 2 years ago
Ledger's joker sucked. He didn't even use laughing gas, Hand buzzers, or anything else faithful to the characters.
kankurofan 2 years ago
well if he used all they same tricks, what would be the point of having a new Joker? i personally liked Ledger's Joker more, though i may be a bit bias since my memory of Nicholas' Joker's a bit fuzzy.

Kefka>Sephiroth
raddudeguy 2 years ago 38
@raddudeguy Kefka has no personality, no real reason for killing all the people he does. Sephiroth is evil not only because he is in control of his actions (unlike Kefka), but he chooses the wrong thing.
TheKevinWalker 1 year ago
@TheKevinWalker IMO, the reason why Kefka wants to destroy everything is, well, he just hates everything. You really don't need a reason to hate something, and in Kefka's case, it's everything but himself. Sephiroth's character development could have been good, but instead, the moment he knows the truth about his existence, he just wants to destroy anything for no real reason.
Golbez has much more character development than Sephiroth and Kefka. But Kefka is just so damn hilarious.
Galdhon 1 year ago
@Galdhon The reason that Sephiroth wanted to destroy everything is because he felt obligated to complete his "mother's" work. Jenova came to destroy the Planet and that's exactly what he intended to do; and he did it in a similar fashion (with the whole meteor and crater thing).

shinsetsu100 2 years ago
I'm not a fan of Sephiroth because...well, just think about it! At first he spent the whole game running from you, then PLOT TWIST! He was really trapped in a sphere of LIQUID WATER!!!!!!! What the hell? I mean, mabye it was mako, or somthing, but Cloud fell in the damn lifestream and lived without a scratch on him! But I digress. Disc 1 of FF7 was disgraceful enough to land Sephiroth pretty far down my list of villans.
But he has a sword twice his height...
Meh, he's alright.
kefka303 2 years ago
Well, Sephirroth doesn't spend the whole game running from you. It's the other way around; he's luring Cloud in for most of disc 1.
As for Cloud surviving the LIFEstream... well, I'm not even sure I need to say anything more...
Sephiroth is a big MacGuffin, but he serves the storyline by revealing/intricately tying into all sorts of details concerning Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Vincent, Zack, Shinra, the Jenova Project, and so on.
YeUndone 2 years ago
Sorry, I meat to say at first it seemed like he was running from you. You give a convincing arguement, but nothing explains how such a powerful villan could possibly be trapped in a sphere of liquid water.
kefka303 2 years ago
Okay, Cloud didn't go through the Lifestream without a scratch. He was comatose for a good bit of the game. I will agree with you. Sephiroth didn't make himself known as much as Kefka. Sephiroth's defining scene was the burning of Nibelheim. Kefka
1. Poisoned people
2. Eradicated most of the life on the planet.
3. Killed all who opposed him with judgement bolts from the sky
4. Had a cult of followers
I think the rest of the media of FF7 are what made Sephiroth what he is today.
shinobi67 2 years ago
As for bosses, I rank Kefka VERY low. Like, above the Cloud of Darkness, but below Emperor Palamekia low. Golbeza might top my list (if he even counts though, being that he wasn't the final boss), and Sephiroth is great as a source of intrigue. People complaining that he's actually Jenova for most of the game are missing the point.
Kefka is just evil, crazy, and ridiculous, all to the point where I just can't care about him one way or the other.
YeUndone 2 years ago
i place Kuja up there as well, i like kefka only in his design
swfan375 2 years ago
Yes, the Japanese version's text was this goofy. He has this setup about how he'll be making this his new throne, and it needs a fantastic name, then he dubs the ship "Sky Dalton GyoKUza". "Gyokuza" means "throne", but Dalton picks the most retarded name possible, and accents (by way of a lengthened vowel) the wrong syllable of gyokuza (should be the first) for added silliness. The "stop the music" part is basically identical ("stop the music" is even in katakana English).
YeUndone 2 years ago 2
GolemBoss will actually eventually just run away. I think he does 2 countdowns, announces he's afraid of heights, and then runs. But if he does that, you don't get the XP, so might as well kill him.

Eh.

Gojitasan 2 years ago 8
Technically, Sephiroth was using Jenova, so even though he wasn't really there, he might as well have been. Still, his influence was absent from more than 50% of the game, which was disappointing to me.

GaaraFredNorrisPro 2 years ago 2
And he killed Aeris from behind. That's cheap. But if you're going by body count, you might want to consider Kuja from FF9. He destroyed an entire planet.

I didn't want to bring him into this because it would seem biased as Kuja is my favorite.
GaaraFredNorrisPro 2 years ago
I agree with you HC about Bosses for Final Fantasy, Kefka is the best, but that comment about Heath Ledger...Joker is suppose to be like that. The original joker acts just like Heath played him...not like Jack's Joker where they made Joker seem like a ****ing circus act gone wrong.

Xelico 3 years ago
